A paralytic is placed on a pallet and lowered through a roof in order to get near Jesus. Jesus rewards the man's trust in him by forgiving his sins first and then healing his physical disability. Jesus makes a connection between spiritual healing and physical healing, and in doing so, proclaims the kingdom of God in a unique way. In what unique ways, given the divine gifts bestowed on us, have we proclaimed the kingdom of God?

The students did an "AWESOME" job on their Science Fair projects! We had judges come in from Lincoln University who complimented us by saying they were the best set of science fair projects that they had ever judged at this level and that our students were very well behaved. Special congratulations to the three students who will represent our school at the diocesan level in March. They are: Justin Lepper - physical science, Brittney Massman - earth science, & Catherine Braun life science. You will represent our school well! The OLOS School basketball teams participated in the Catholic Bowl last weekend. The 5/6 girls & 4/5 boys lost on their first round. The JV boys won their first game on Sunday against Holy Family, Freeburg, but then lost a very well played game on Monday evening to IC White. As the basketball season winds down we just want everyone to know how proud we are of our players and coaches - much hard work and dedication to the team! On Friday the students brought home the "Rice Bowl" and calendar/prayer packet in their Friday folders. Please use these tools to make this a prayerful and meaningful Lenten season. All funds collected through the "Rice Bowl" supports Catholic Relief Services. 5 On February 12, 2009, HCS/HR 294 and 212 was passed in the Missouri House of Representatives. This resolution calls on the U.S. Congress to reject Missouri passage of the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). The resolution directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to send a copy of the Resolution to all members of the Missouri Congressional delegation. This is a major victory for pro-life in Missouri. It is a special event for our Diocese because all of the representatives in our Diocese voted for the resolution except three. February 21-22, 2009 Dear Brothers and Sisters! Once again the Holy Season of Lent will begin this Ash Wednesday, February 25, 2009, with the solemn distribution of ashes. We read in the Holy Gospel Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. This 40 day Lenten period during this Year of St. Paul is another reminder to us of the power and the glory that prayer and fasting can be for a Christian in the world today. Jesus Himself prepared for the mission that lay before Him through prayer and fasting. We too gain spiritual strength for our battles against evil by imitating our Lord with these disciplines. During this Lent I encourage each member of the Diocese of Jefferson City to cast aside all distractions to the spirit and to grow in those spiritual truths taught by our Holy Mother Church, which nourish the soul and move it to a deeper and more sincere love of God and neighbor. Along with fasting, I urge you to make use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, the Holy Rosary and, of course, Sunday Mass. May the Immaculate Heart of Mary support us in our efforts to live a good Lent and to be closer to her son, Jesus, who suffered and died for our sins. With my best wishes and personal regards, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John R. Gaydos Bishop of Jefferson City

6 What is the Church's official position concerning penance and abstinence from meat during Lent? In 1966 Pope Paul VI reorganized the Church's practice of public penance in his "Apostolic Constitution on Penance" (Poenitemini). The 1983 revision of the Code of Canon Law incorporated the changes made by Pope Paul. Not long after that, the U.S. bishops applied the canonical requirements to the practice of public penance in our country. To sum up those requirements, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. According to Father John Huels in The Pastoral Companion (Franciscan Herald Press), abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are not forbidden. So it is permissible to use margarine and lard. Lenten Customs, Baptism Is the Key, Ordinarily Baptisms are not celebrated during Lent but are reserved for celebration during the Easter season (Emergencies are an exception to this general rule) the key to understanding the meaning of Lent is simple: Baptism. Preparation for Baptism and for renewing baptismal commitment lies at the heart of the season. Since the Second Vatican Council, the Church has reemphasized the baptismal character of Lent, especially through the restoration of the Catechumenate and its Lenten rituals. Our challenge today is to renew our understanding of this important season of the Church year and to see how we can integrate our personal practices into this renewed perspective. Why is Baptism so important in our Lenten understanding? Lent as a 40-day season developed in the fourth century from three merging sources. The first was the ancient paschal fast that began as a twoday observance before Easter but was gradually lengthened to 40 days. The second was the catechumenate as a process of preparation for Baptism, including an intense period of preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation to be celebrated at Easter. The third was the Order of Penitents, which was modeled on the catechumenate and sought a second conversion for those who had fallen back into serious sin after Baptism. As the catechumens (candidates for Baptism) entered their final period of preparation for Baptism, the penitents and the rest of the community accompanied them on their journey and prepared to renew their baptismal vows at Easter.
