2 From the t Past July 17,, th Sunday in Ordinary Time The New GIRM: Eucharistic Prayer I In just 19 weeks we ll be using the new GIRM revised General Instruction f the Roman Missal! F past articles on my yearlong series on these changes, visit our parish website: Last week we completed our walk-through the Mass, but omitted the Eucharistic Prayers [EPs]; we now begin the arduous task of reviewing the revised EPs. Due to space limitation, it is not possible to do a side-by-side comparison of the soon-to-be old and new EPs. On occasion I will quote the current version, but f the most part I will rely on your memy... since you ve heard them f fty years! And if you have a current old missalette at home, I fgive you f stealing... but keep it f now so you can compare the old and new EPs! [But as Jesus said, Go and sin [ steal] no me! ] The present version of EP I begins by saying: We come to you Father with praise and thanksgiving through Jesus Christ your Son. Through him we ask you to accept and bless these gifts we offer you in sacrifice. Now consider the newly revised EP I: the Priest, with hands extended, says: To you, therefe, most merciful Father, we make humble prayer and petition through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Ld: He joins his hands and says that you accept He makes the Sign of the Cross once over the bread and chalice together, saying: and bless + these gifts, these offerings, these holy and unblemished sacrifices, With hands extended, he continues: which we offer you firstly f your holy catholic Church. Be pleased to grant her peace, to guard, unite and govern her throughout the whole wld, together with your servant N. our Pope and N. our Bishop,* and all those who, holding to the truth, hand on the catholic and apostolic faith. * Mention may be made here of the Coadjut Bishop, Auxiliary Bishops, as noted in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, n Besides the loftier, me fmal, elegant wds, notice the focal point at the onset: the current EP I starts with us: We come to you, Father... but the revised prayer me properly starts with God: To you, therefe, most merciful Father... Then, as is common in the revised translation, we do not tell God what to do; we make humble prayer and petition. And we ll stop telling God to watch over it... and guide it. Grant it peace and unity... We will ask the Ld f these gifts... if God be pleased to do so. Why? Often throughout salvation histy God permitted Israel and the Church to undergo persecution and trials... f Her own good! As one priest often says, God scourges His Church... to purify Her of Her sins! The revised EP will still mention the Pope and local bishops and his assistant bishops by name. But the new version makes it me clear that one true faith is not just something that comes to us from the apostles as we now pray, but must be accepted and handed on by us to the next generation! The Commemation of the Living remains almost the same: Remember, Ld, your servants N. and N. the Priest joins his hands & prays briefly f those f whom he intends to pray; then extending his hands he continues: and all gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. F them, we offer you this sacrifice of praise they offer it f themselves and all who are dear to them, f the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true. Notice the wds, they offer it f themselves... It could not be me evident that the new translation wants us to realize that EVERYONE at Mass is a part of the sacrifice, that ALL OF US are offering our prayers and intentions, our good wks and acts of penance... our very lives... along with the priest... and the bread and wine that the people present at the altar! Next week: me of EP I. With my love and prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder

5 Summer Religious Fmation News The wds to an old song tell us to count our blessings...one by one, and see what God has done.. These wds came to my mind as we came to the close of another successful summer session. There are so many people to be acknowledged f sharing their time, talents, and treasures with the children of our parish that it is hard to find adequate wds to thank them f their enthusiasm, dedication and service above and beyond what was required. First on this list is our own Past, Father Mike who so lovingly celebrated mass with the children taking extra time to review how we should respectfully receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, as well as teaching about the parts of the Mass, appropriate responses and gestures of respect. We can truly count him among the many blessings God has bestowed on our St. Mary Parish community! Clearly we could not have had such a successful program without the many catechists who answered the call to insure that our children learned about Jesus and the Church in a memable way. Traveling about the building each day was a truly enjoyable task as I listened to the Good News shared in a variety of ways which included singing, perfmances of student written skits and a variety of arts and craft projects. Each and every catechist daily demonstrated a strong desire to help the children develop into future disciples through lesson planning, and sharing with each other. Our journey began with the completion of the necessary wkshops and training in May and June and meetings with idea exchanges. Count them among our many blessings, too! Our Sadlier textbook representative, Mike Power, unveiled the new focus of the program last year entitled Project Disciple designed to capture the six tasks of catechesis aimed at fming our young people into disciples of Jesus Christ at every grade level. What a blessing he has been as well! These tasks as identified by the National Directy of Catechesis (#20 p, 63) aim to achieve this by: < Learning about Jesus and their Catholic faith through Scripture and Tradition < Celebrating their faith by learning about the liturgy and sacraments < Following Jesus' example and teachings by living the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes < Praying to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit everyday in different ways < Sharing in the lives of their families and participating in the mission of the Church to share the Good News of Jesus Christ < Living their faith by giving witness to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ (WeBelieveWeb.com) Our days began the same with either readings of the day, prayers and learning about the lives of the saints Mass. From there we went to our individual classes to learn something me about Jesus. Grade one---jesus' example of God's love and our membership in the church Grade two---the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist Grade three---the Church and its disciples Grade four---the Commandments and how to live them Grade five---the imptance of the Sacraments Grade six ---Old Testament heroes and histy Grade seven---jesus and his life and times Grade eight--church histy and practical ways to live out our faith as fully initiated members We have been truly blessed by this great outpouring of loving service from our catechists and extend to them a sincere thanks f a job well done: Renee Cercchione, Jackie Tobin, Laura La Bruno, Mazzion Schnackenberg, Sue McGuire, Raquel Martinez (Vargas), Cabrini Howell, Derek Keyes, Dennis Fitzsimons, Lraine DeMan, Carole Koto, Fiolmena Carton, Peggy Roles, Karen Hughes, Carol Gilhawley, Joanne Dezego, Christine Wazinski, Susana Rojas and Nick Macri. We also had an excellent suppt staff made up of the following: Anthony Gallo (office) Rebecca Plessel, Yolanne Montiero, Gillian Bonner (office) Clarice Garcia, Katherine Calabrese and Laurie Nowinski who really helped to make the office run smoothly and assisted in all areas.
