Luke 9:62 THE PRICE OF FREEDOM Today s readings promise that if we could escape from the shackles of our attachments we would be happier, freer, more peaceful. Luke s Gospel begins, When the days for Jesus being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem. Aware of the opposition and danger awaiting him, Jesus went forward. Naturally, brave people volunteered to join him. But Jesus cautioned them. Could they give up their attachments to home and possessions, friends and family, conventional responsibilities? A tough challenge, but not unprecedented. Centuries before, Elijah had criticized Elisha for wanting time just to kiss his parents good-bye before following Elijah. Just where would such a path take Elisha? Or Jesus followers? Or us? Paul tells us, For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. The outcome is freedom, but if the requirements don t give us pause, then maybe we re not paying close enough attention. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 4 Thirteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time THANK YOU Page Thank you for the great welcome you gave Fr. Arnold Parungao last Sunday. A special thank you to Barbara and the Angel Food Ministry. Let us together help make Fr. Arnold's ministry a great blessing amongst us. As I was cleaning up the parish house I came across the following verses on priesthood: If a priest preaches over ten minutes, he's long winded. If his sermon is short, he didn't prepare it. If the parish funds are high, he's a businessman. If he mentions money, he's money mad. If he visits his parishioners, he's nosy. If he doesn't he's snobbish. If he has fairs and bazaars, he's bleeding the people. If he doesn't, there's no life in the parish. If he takes time in confession to help and advise sinners, he takes too long. If he doesn't, he doesn't care. If he celebrates the liturgy in quiet voice, he's a bore. If he puts feeling into it, he's an actor. If he starts Mass on time, his watch is fast. If he starts late, he's holding up the people. If he tries to lead the people in music, he's showing off. If he doesn't, he doesn't care what Mass is like. If he decorates the church, he's wasting money. If he doesn't, he's letting it run down. If he's young, he's not experienced. If he's old, he ought to retire. If he dies, there was nobody like him and there will never be his equal again! God Bless, Fr. Mike Giggles: An usher at the cinema observed a young man lying on three seats. Lucas 9:62 EL PRECIO DE LA LIBERTAD Las lecturas de hoy nos aseguran que si somos capaces de escapar de nuestras ataduras seremos más felices, más libres y tendremos más paz. El Evangelio de Lucas comienza diciendo Cuando ya se acercaba el tiempo en que tenía que salir de este mundo, Jesús tomó la firme determinación de emprender el viaje a Jerusalén. Consciente de la resistencia y el peligro que le esperaban, Jesús siguió adelante. Naturalmente, unos valientes se brindaron a acompañarlo. Pero Jesús les advirtió. Serían capaces de romper sus ataduras con sus casas, posesiones, amigos y familias, de abandonar sus responsabilidades normales? Un duro reto, pero no sin precedentes. Siglos antes, Elías criticó a Eliseo por pedirle tiempo para ir a despedirse de sus padres antes de seguir a Elías. A dónde llevaría a Eliseo ese camino? O a los seguidores de Jesús? O a nosotros? Nos dice Pablo: Cristo nos ha liberado para que seamos libres. Conserven, pues, la libertad y no se sometan de nuevo al yugo de la esclavitud. Esta obra relata como un músico llega de noche a la Abadía de Fetero pidiendo posada. Los hermanos del monasterio lo invitaron a pasar la noche. Allí él les contó su vida pecaminosa y su deseo de encontrar un Miserere (Salmo 51) digno de expiar sus pecados ante Dios. Le contaron del Miserere del Monte que cantaban durante la noche los monjes difuntos de un Monasterio que había sido destruido siglos atrás. El músico afanado por encontrar su Miserere, corrió a la montaña donde escuchó aquel lamentoso y bello canto. Al regresar a la Abadía intentó escribir la música de aquel Miserere, pero lo único que logro fue volverse loco. Aquel pobre hombre murió sin reconocer que cada quien debe entonar a su manera su propio y pobre Miserere mei (piedad de mi).
