James 2:5 THE MESSIAH FORETOLD Today s story of the cure of a deaf man with a speech impediment is a good example of how much is contained in a simple miracle story. The Greek word mogilalos appears only here in all of the New Testament. It is a technical term referring to someone with a stammer. It is also used only once in the entire Jewish scriptures, in the passage that we read today as our first reading from Isaiah. Clearly, by his choice of this precise word Mark wants us to recognize that what Jesus is doing is the fulfillment of what Isaiah had predicted centuries earlier. In fact, Mark wants us to recognize that Jesus is the Messiah foretold by Isaiah and the other Jewish prophets of old. The word ephphatha, be opened, used to describe the restoration of the man s speech, is another example of a subtle allusion to an earlier prophecy. This time the prophecy in question is from Ezekiel, when he foretells that in the messianic age, your mouth shall be opened to speak (24:26). The sophistication of Mark s narrative is further revealed when we realize that there are multiple levels within a single reference. Mark not only draws our attention back to Israel s prophetic past, he also points to the initiatory practice of his contemporaries by his mention of such things as spittle, touching of ears, and the use of the word ephphatha, all of which were practices incorporated into the early Church s baptismal ritual. 4 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 SEPTEMBER 11TH On Tuesday, September 11th, as a nation we will stand still to mark the eleventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed over three thousand people. The World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, are forever imprinted upon our minds and hearts. The loss we felt, the empathy we had for the victims and their families was very personal. We cried, we prayed and we changed, especially when we saw the ultimate sacrifice of people who gave their lives because of love and duty. Families tried to telephone one another; mothers and fathers wanted to hold their children. September 11th has left us a loving and holy legacy a legacy of wanting to put priorities in order with family, neighbors and God. On this anniversary maybe new beginnings need to be made. For those who have betrayed us Father, forgive them. For those who have let us down.father, forgive them. For those who have been indifferent to us.father, forgive them. For those who have crippled our lives.father, forgive them. For those who have doubted us.father, forgive them. For those who have accused us...father, forgive them. GABRIEL PROJECT: Many mothers faced with crisis pregnancies feel abandoned by their families, the fathers of their babies and their communities. More and more, they are poor and in their teens. Some are homeless. Most feel afraid. For too many reasons, abortion seems the only answer. Churches and pro-life service groups have sought ways to expand their embrace of women in crisis pregnancies. Now comes a way they can do so together.... The Gabriel Project! The Gabriel Project is an ecumenical movement of churches standing together in their commitment to offer assistance to women and families facing crisis pregnancies. Participating congregations will "advertise" this commitment by placing a "Sign of Hope", with its "800" number Helpline, which assures any mother that the local church community cares for her and is prepared to offer immediate and practical help with her pregnancy. Callers to the Helpline are referred to the nearest appropriate church coordinator. The coordinator and the parish volunteers "Angels" - work with the parish, the Diocese and local community resources to meet the mother's needs. MINISTRIES UPDATE Interfaith Food Closet: September is HUNGER ACTION MONTH. Please help feed those in need in our community by bringing non-perishable food items when you come to Mass. Deposit items in the wooden bins inside the doors of the Church. Seniors Group: General meeting will be held Friday, September 14th in the Beatitude Room at 11:30am for a bag lunch.
