2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 15, 2012 Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you. 1 Corinthians 6:19a SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING In today s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. Speak, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. Speak, they say, we are listening. God s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God s word. Let s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don t miss God s voice. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 4 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 PUT GOD FIRST On Tuesday night, I met with our Parish Council and we were prioritizing our goals and dreams for St. Teresa of Avila parish. The parish council are fellow parishioners who advise the priest on parish life and the Presence of God in our midst. Through their energy, vision and prayers our community is more alive and active. I had asked all of them to share about their families, and they enquired of me, "how Christmas had gone for the parish?" We were all Blessed. Over the past few months we have been establishing our top five priorities and I asked to hear theirs. I could feel a deafening silence as I heard loud and clear "Put God First, and prayer needs to be a priority." I should not have been surprised by what your fellow parishioners requested, but I could feel the Spirit of God like Pentecost, speak straight to the heart. This morning at our parish and school Mass, the readings were very appropriate for the number one priority of our parish council. 1st Samuel, chapter three spoke of the call of Samuel. Eli, the high priest, had put his own selfish and corrupt priorities ahead of God. He was rejected, and God chose Samuel instead. In the Gospel from Mark 1:29, Jesus spent the day healing the people, but the evening He spent in prayer. The psalm said, "You, Lord, are the light that keeps me safe. I am not afraid of anyone. You protect me and I have no fears." (Psalm 27:1) I asked the young people at Mass, "Who should be first on Sunday?" They answered in one voice, "God". I then asked, "Who should first on Monday., Tuesday., Wednesday., Thursday., Friday.. & Saturday?" Each enthusiastic response was, "God." The Holy Spirit has spoken loud and clear through the children and our parish council, "Put God First!" Next week I will tell you about who is on our parish council, and the other four priorities for the coming year. God Bless, Fr. Mike ************************************************************************* Giggles: Pat: My wife and I argue a lot..the least little thing sets her off." Mike: "Your lucky. Mine is a self-starter." **************************************** "I was relaxing on my favorite chair on Sunday" said one guy to another, "reading the newspaper, watching a ball game on T.V. and listening to another on the radio, eating a snack, drinking a beer, and rubbing the dog with my feet.... And my wife has the nerve to accuse me of just sitting there and doing nothing." ***************************************** A young first grader is walking slowly to school. "Hurry up!" shouts his mother. "There's no rush," he replies. "They're open until three." **************************************** Teacher: Johnny, give me a sentence beginning with "I". Johnny replies, "I is." the teacher interrupts. "No, Johnny. Always begin with "I am". Johnny replies, "I am the ninth letter of the alphabet."

6 January 15, 2012 Page 6 CATHOLICS: WELCOME HOME My dear brothers and sisters: Please know that we miss you, we love you, and we hope you will rejoin our Catholic family for our Sunday Mass. Some of you have drifted away from the Church and have been waiting for a good time to return. I pray that you will consider this the time to join us on our faith journey toward Heaven. The sacred teachings of the Church offer guidance, direction and meaning in a world where so many cannot find their way. Our faith points us to Jesus, who is "the Way", the Truth and the Life." Some of you have made a choice to stop coming to Church because you have been hurt by the actions of someone in the Church or because of a difficulty with a Church teaching. Please do not let those experiences and memories separate you from the love of Christ and of our Catholic family and prevent you from receiving the grace of the sacraments. To those who consider themselves unwelcome at Mass because of some irregularity or moral struggle, please know that you are always loved by God and the Catholic community desires your presence with us. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. An inability to fulfill all aspects of Christian workship or to receive Communion should not keep you from Mass. In fact, the habit of being faithful to the Sunday obligation can provide the actual grace, if you cooperate with it, to give you the strength to overcome current obstacles and find paths of reconciliation. We stand ready to help you. For you who are questioning or deciding to return to the Catholic faith, we have 4 sessions scheduled for your convenience. These are sessions where no question is out of bounds. All sessions are scheduled for Sunday mornings between the 8:00am and 10:30am Masses (9:15 to 10:15am) in the Beatitude Room in the parish hall on January 15th & 22nd, February 5th & 12th. Contact: Sr. Anita Minihane at ext. 13, or Fr. Mike at if you wish to speak to someone face to face to share your journey. We wait and long for your return. Our community is not whole because of your absence. ********************************************************************************************************************************* The Bible, A Biography How to Read the Bible as Spirituality Since the Vatican Council II (and before!), the Church has encouraged the faithful to read, believe and live the Truth of Sacred Scripture. This six-week course is designed to help the disciple of Christ to interpret Scripture rightly in the Church and in the context of the Modern (and Post-Modern) world. The teacher of this course, Deacon Red Cheever has been studying and teaching Scripture for the past 40 years. He has also attempted to live the Truth that he knows. Deacon Red would like to work with a group of adults in reading and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He is an excellent teacher and scripture scholar. The course will be grounded in ecclesial and scholarly texts (see below), but the participant need only bring a Bible. Again the goal: to read the Bible so that one might live the Good News God proclaimed in Jesus. Many of you have requested this class, so here it is! All sessions will be held in the chapel on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:00am, For those who do not like to drive at night. Evening classes are from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The dates are: January18, 25 and February 1st & 8th. It is our desire to have a full house at each session.
