2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 23, 2011 Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. Psalm 27:14 SEEKING THE LIGHT In today s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin s death, perhaps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. 4 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 VOCATIONS Heavenly Father, your Divine Son taught us to pray to the Lord of the harvest, to send laborers into His vineyard. We earnestly ask you to bless our diocese and our world with many priests, deacons and religious who will love You fervently, and gladly and courageously spend their lives in service to Your Son s Church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We pray that their lives may be always centered on our Eucharistic Lord, and that they may be devoted sons and daughters of Mary, our Mother, in making You known and loved,.... that all may attain Your Kingdom. Bless our families, and our children and choose from our homes, those whom You desire for this holy work. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen Mother Teresa of Calcutta was known for her social witness to the gospel. The commitment that under girded her work is worth reading and noting. I never look at the Masses as my responsibility. I look at the individual. I can love only one person at a time. I can feed only one person at a time. So you begin.... I began. I picked up one person maybe if I did not pick up that one person I wouldn t have picked up say 42,000. Same thing for you, same thing in your family, same thing in your local church, just begin... one, one, one. The scripture tells us that God calls each of us individually and calls us by name. God continues to call all of us to build His Kingdom. We all have different roles. Yet, each roll is enhanced by the lives of family members and other close role models. Two characteristics I have noticed in my personal observation of priests, deacons, religious and seminarians, (and as a matter of fact all Christians), (i) extraordinary spirit of generosity, and (ii) the shadow of a cross, which is pain and suffering. Please say a prayer for the priests, deacons, and religious that minister in our parish, in our neighboring parishes and diocese. Let all of us invite one person at a time into our lives, homes and parishes, and let all of us invite people one at a time into the priesthood, deaconate and religious life. Let us support them especially with our prayers and love. God Bless, Fr. A man was seen plunging into the sea and he kept the young lady afloat until they were rescued. Everyone was surprised to see that the gentleman was in his eighties. That night the cruise captain threw a party in honor of the brave gentleman. After a standing ovation there were cries of speech, speech. The old man rose and said, Alright, who was the one who pushed me in? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ John Murphy had a dream which taught him the danger of delay: I dreamed I was with the Pope last night and he asked me what I would like to drink? Well I saw whisky, a lemon, and honey on the table behind him, so I asked him for a toddy. Cold or hot, asks the Pope. Hot says I. Well, says the Pope, I have to go down the hallway to the kitchen for hot water, and off he goes. Before he got back I woke straight up. And now I m disappointed I didn t take it cold.

Boys and girls will compete separately in five different age groups with ten eventual champions. Winners are eligible to advance to the district, chapter, and state championships. The contest will be held Today, January 23 in the Parish Hall. Registration begins at 12:00PM, and the competition starts at 12:30PM. This is a free event. Contestants must be at least age 10 on January 1, A copy of the contestant s birth certificate to verify age, and a parent s signature of consent for the registration sheet are required. Ten and eleven year old competitors will shoot from a distance of twelve feet, while the older competitors shoot from the standard free throw distance of fifteen feet.
