2 Third Sunday of Easter Page 2 Third Sunday of Easter April 10, 2016 Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing. Revelation 5:12 REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, countless in number from heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus arrest, trial, and crucifixion. 4 Third Sunday of Easter Page 4 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI As a young boy I went with my Dad to daily Mass at the Capuchin Franciscan Church in Cork. I attended St. Francis High School and graduated fifty years ago this year. I would have entered the Capuchin Franciscan Fathers, but... they wanted me to do a degree that included Latin which I was poor at. Instead I became a Diocesan Priest and I didn t have to study Latin. Despite not joining the Capuchin Franciscans I always loved St. Francis and I keep a statue of him in the garden. During the last papal elections I was praying that Cardinal Sean O Malley, a Capuchin Franciscan, would be elected Pope. When our new Pope chose the name Francis I, I was elated. John Berndoni became known as Francis because of his early affection for French fashions and the French way of life. He is better known as a lover of nature and animals, a tireless worker for peace and simplicity of life. In his day he and his followers invited all people to look at the gospel as a mirror, and to make the necessary adjustment. Many people think of St. Francis as a rebel or a Hippie. Yes, he was counter cultural in that he chose the gospel way of life. His life and that of his followers were absolutely orthodox. They had a remarkable devotion to the Church, to the Sacraments and to the Pope. He sought and received recognition for his followers from Pope Innocent III. Poverty, Chastity and Obedience were the vows that the Franciscans lived by. St. Francis first undertaking was to repair local churches that had fallen into disrepair because of lack of use. The church had lost its credibility, it had moved away from the gospel values. St. Francis asked his followers to act humbly. He did not accept ordination to the priesthood, he stayed a deacon so as not to have the adulation of people. Joyful singing was part of his life as he and his followers moved from town to town. Within ten years of their charter from Pope Innocent III the Franciscans were five thousand in number. At their first general chapter in 1221, five hundred came seeking admission. The Franciscans preached in the language of the people and included non-ordained people in their order by establishing the third order. Men and women continued to work in their professions, raise families and lived a modified version of the Franciscan rule. The faithful shared the spiritual advantages of close association with the Friars through prayer and works of charity. Such was St. Francis humble and joyful life that he was canonized within two years of his death. Our Memorial Gardens here at St. Teresa s are placed under the protection of St. Francis, and they help us to give to the School Scholarship Fund. St. Francis Pray For Us. God Bless, Fr. Apocalipsis 5:12 REDIMIDOS Recuerdas a Pedro la noche que arrestaron a Jesús? Insistía en que nunca había oído de Jesús. Hoy estamos llamados a unirnos a Pedro en dar testimonio del nombre de Jesús como lo hace en la primera lectura, y a proclamar nuestro amor a él tal como lo hace Pedro en el pasaje del Evangelio. La poderosa imagen de la visión de san Juan en la segunda lectura del libro del Apocalipsis nos enseña la comunidad a la que pertenecemos cuando tenemos fe en el nombre de Jesús. Nos unimos a todos los seres vivientes miles y millones en el cielo, sobre la tierra, debajo de ella y en el mar, y todo lo que hay en ellos (Apocalipsis 5:11, 13). La majestad y dignidad expresadas en cada lectura están en profundo contraste con la oscura y miserable imagen de Pedro y los otros apóstoles en los momentos en que Jesús era arrestado, juzgado y crucificado.
