Sts. Anthony & Joseph Support of our Parish Community for the offertory week of May 14/ was: $2, Total accumulated offertory for the current year to date beginning July 1, 2010 is: $144, Support of our Parish Community for the same week in 2009 was: $3, Total accumulated offertory for the same period year to date was: $148, May 22 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Acts 6: 1-7; Ps 33: (22); 1 Pt 2: 4-9 Jn 14: 1-12 Why are you so troubled? Life can be troubling. Sometimes it is all we can do to train our child in the Christian faith, spend quality time with them, hold them when they are sick, and rejoice with them when they are successful. Only to watch as at 15 they turn away from the family, take a nose dive with their grades, and refuse to talk with us anymore. When our Lord asks us why we are so troubled about life, we easily give Him lots of reasons, don't we? Like the disciples, we can say in agony, But Lord, we don't know the way. We need direction, counsel, and comfort. And during troubling times, there is no greater gift He can give us than His presence and comfort. His promise to comfort us doesn't only refer to the afterlife. His comfort is available today to restore, to mend, and to heal the brokenness that life has laid upon us BISHOP S APPEAL UPDATE Last weekend we began our 2011 Bishop s Appeal Campaign. I am very grateful for all who made a pledge to support this effort. In both parishes we made a significant dent in the amount we have been asked to raise, but we still have far to go. Historically, one third of our registered parishioners give to the Bishop s Appeal and they do so with great generosity. To those who have not yet given, or those who have never given in the past, I ask you to consider if you are able to make a pledge. If we could achieve full participation from everyone, the burden for each person or family would be greatly lessened. As I mentioned last week in my homily, there are many good reasons to support the important work that this appeal supports. If even one of these works struck a chord with you, if you see even one as significant for the life of our diocese, our parish and the greater community around us, then I ask you to please participate in this important campaign in the life of our local Church. There are Bishop s Appeal envelopes throughout the church and at each of the entrances. Please consider completing one. You can return it to us through the normal weekly collection, or by mailing it or dropping it off at one of our offices. Again, to those who have already given, please know how deeply grateful I am for your generosity. And to those who are still considering making a donation, I encourage you to support all of the good these funds allow us as a Church to accomplish in Jesus name. In Christ s Peace, Fr. Tom Lawless Holy Family Pledged to Date: $ 8, Number of Gifts: 67 Assessment: $49, Sts. Anthony & Joseph Pledged to Date: $ 9, Number of Gifts: 77 Assessment: $43,432.00

4 WEEKLY CALENDAR Holy Family Parish Pastoral Council Meeting Monday, May 23 6:00 p.m. Parish Office Bldg. Mass at Folt s Nursing Facility Wednesday, May 25 2:00 p.m. MONEY COUNTERS Monday, May 23 Joseph Ehlinger, Arlene Ehlinger, Maria Reynolds, Walt Guiney, Donna Bonk, Anne Cotter BULLETIN FOLDERS Friday, May 27 Joan Vogt, Maureen Petkovsek INFORMATION FOR BOTH PARISHES CEMETERY REMINDER Calvary We are very grateful for the efforts our cemetery families make to decorate and beautify their family plots with lovely flowers, greenery (and vegetables). Just a reminder that plantings cannot extend more than 12 inches in front of stone markers or be situated so that cemetery lawn mowers are impeded in their work. No decorations are permitted behind cemetery stones, because those gravesites belong to others. SECOND COLLECTION May The Collection for the Church in Central & Eastern Europe supports the essential and unmet pastoral needs of the church of the region. Poor Clare nuns in Poland received a central heating system through your previous generosity. Without the heat, the sisters had been falling ill frequently in the long, cold Eastern European winters, affecting their ministry of prayer. Please be generous to the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe where great needs remain. Visit to learn more about the important projects funded by the Collection. CONGRATULATIONS FR. VAIL We will pray for those who are ill, hospitalized or recuperating. If you know someone who could use prayers, please call the parish office and leave their name for inclusion in the bulletin. Please make sure you have their permission to do so. MONEY COUNTERS Monday, May 23 Frank Evangelista, Rose Marie Lamanna MAKE A DONATION Remember to save and send in: Box tops for Education, Campbell s Soup Labels, and Used Ink Cartridges. He will begin his engineering career as a Mechanical Engineer at Knoll s Atomic Power Labs in Niskayuna starting in July. This past Thursday, May 19 th was the 60 th Anniversary of Fr. Vail s ordination. We thank him for the gift his priesthood has been to our church and our parishes. We pray God continues to bless him and his vocation in our church.

5 PERHAPS YOU COULD HELP? In keeping with the mission of the Christian Service Committee, we have added another project to our Ministry. We donated $ from the proceeds of the Super Bowl Raffle to the Herkimer Elementary School. We want to begin a fund to help those families that may fall short of receiving help for their children through the free breakfast or the reduced lunch program, offered by the school. Statistics show that one in every five children live in poverty in this area. Providing them with a meal is one way we could help. The project will be overseen by the school. If you would like to help, checks can be made directly to the Herkimer Elementary School, with a note in the check memo Lunch Project, and mailed to 255 Gros Blvd., Herkimer, NY or you could put the check in a plain white envelope marked Lunch Project and put it into the collection basket. If you prefer to give cash, please put it into a plain envelope marked Lunch Project and put it into the collection basket. Your help has always made the projects we undertake successful. Any donation you wish to make will be greatly appreciated. Christian Service Committee Of Sts. Anthony & Joseph 84 th ANNUAL ST.
