There is an awesomeness about this story that can be taken for granted, especially as it becomes more and more familiar to us each year, after all, we just heard this story a couple of weeks ago on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Here is a young girl that has an extraordinary relationship with God. She is chosen for the astounding task of giving birth to God's Son so we would all know God's salvation. Mary's "yes" to the angel is the perfect example of faith and obedience to God, which is the true sign of discipleship. Mary was Jesus' first and best disciple. We are all called to follow her example. CHRISTMAS We of course think of Christmas as a time for giving gifts to those we love and care about. Christmas is a time to reflect on the greatest gift ever given - the gift of the Son of God given to each one of us. On this day God comes to live among us and promises never to leave us. And like all good gifts, this greatest of gifts is given to us freely, without reservations. All we need to do is accept this gift; to take this gift into our hearts. May we all rejoice in this greatest of gifts like a little child on Christmas morning gazing at the gifts under the tree. FEAST of St. STEPHEN The day after Christmas is the Feast of Saint Steven, one of the original seven deacons of the church, and the first martyr of the church. Stephen aroused the anger of the Jewish religious leaders by proclaiming that Jesus was the Messiah. He was eventually stoned to death for what he believed and taught. One of the witnesses at the stoning was Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee who would later become a follower of Christ, and eventually the Apostle to the Gentiles under the name of Paul. As Stephen was being stoned to death, he proved his great devotion to Christ by doing what Christ did for those who crucified him. Stephen prayed to God, asking God to forgive those who were killing him.

6 MERRY CHRISTMAS Christmas is the Church s time to look back, remember, and re-live that first Christmas when God came to live among us as a little child born in a stable in the small town of Bethlehem. The manger scene depicts that so vividly - the Christ Child lying in the manger surrounded by the animals, and in the loving presence of his mother Mary and step-father Joseph. Christmas is also a time to look ahead to Christ s second coming at the end of time, when we will experience the Lord face-to-face in all his splendor. In our own families, Christmas is a time to look back and reflect. We look back and remember all of the Christmases that we have shared with family and friends. The joy of watching our children open their presents; the stories and food that we shared with one another over the years. And most of all, we remember the love that we have shared and continue to share with one another. This is the true spirit of Christmas. The toys, the warm coats and gloves, or whatever the presents, are just part of our way to say to one another I love you. This, of course, is the true meaning of Christmas. God so loved the world, so loved each and every one of us, that he gave us his only Son. And while we look back at Christmases past, and look forward to Christmases to come, let us always know that God is always with us; not just on Christmas day but every day of our lives. God is there in our joys and our sorrows; in the good times and in the not-so-good times. God grasps us by the hand and accompanies us on our journey through life, whatever it may bring. May we also always be their for one another, walking with one another through whatever life brings; this, too, is the meaning of Christmas. On behalf of Fr Healy, Deacon Joe, Deacon Ron, and the staff at Sts. Anthony and Joseph: Sandy, Kevin, Carol, and Lori, let me wish all of you a very blessed Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. God's Blessings, Deacon Jim
