2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH POQUONOCK Introduction to the Liturgy of the Day The Sundays that begin Ordinary Time each year eventually turn to the call of the first disciples. Today we will hear about the miraculous catch of fish and the invitation to Peter, James, and John to change what they will be fishing for. We too have been invited to become disciples, through our Baptism. On this last Sunday before Lent, it is good to be reminded of our call. The schedule for Ash Wednesday Services at Saint Joseph Parish is as follows: 7:30 AM Prayer Service with distribution of ashes 12:10 PM Prayer Service with distribution of ashes 5:30 PM Mass including distribution of ashes Lenten Regulations Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are between the ages of 18 & 59. This means to refrain from eating food between meals and to eat only one full meal. The other two meals should be lighter meals. Liquids are permitted between meals. 3 THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Lenten Monday Evening Confessions The Archdiocese of Hartford is happy to provide weekly Lenten Confessions again this year, as a way for Catholics to prepare for Easter. Many Catholic es in the Archdiocese of Hartford will be open from 6 to 7 PM on Mondays during Lent and will have our priests available to listen to Confessions. The confessions are designed to make it simple for you on your way home from work, or on your way from running errands, to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It s also a way to welcome those, who have not received the Sacrament in a while, back to the to experience God s forgiveness. Confessions will be held at Saint Joseph on February 22 nd, 29 th, March 7 th, 14 th, and 21 st. Soup for the Soul Saint Gabriel Adult Education Committee will sponsor Soup for the Soul. Deacon Carl Lickwar will facilitate this Lenten Program to begin on Wednesday, February 17 th, at 6 PM at Saint Gabriel in the Hall. All are welcome, in addition to this Lenten Program a simple meatless soup supper will be available. The program will run on the following Wednesdays: February 17 th, 24 th, March 2 nd, 9 th, 16 th, and 23 rd. In this way the memory of the deceased is honored and a good work, either civic or religious, is perpetuated. There are numerous charities that have been traditionally designated for such purpose. Memorial donations to the Saint Joseph Remembrance Fund are restricted to the betterment and furtherance of our worship and our place of worship the. Quarterly Collection of Sample-Size Toiletries Our next quarterly collection for the sample-size toiletries will be held next weekend. Thank you to all our frequent flyers who generously continue to support this project. The women at Interval House who receive these items often do not have anything with them and very much need and appreciate the items you give them. Children s Bulletins Parents: students in grades K - 5 will receive a bulletin each week during Lent that contains pictures to color, games, puzzles and Bible verses that will help you introduce and talk about the Biblical witnesses of Christ s passion. Bulletins will be available at the entrances for children who are not in the Religious Education Program. C2 Students All C2 students and their sponsors will gather at Saint Gabriel at 6:30 PM on Thursday, March 3 rd, for Confirmation practice. Saint Gabriel & Saint Joseph Youth Group will meet on Sunday, February 7 th, from 4 PM - 5:30 PM at Saint Gabriel Hall. We will be cooking several meals that will be served at the Immacare Shelter Dinner on Monday, February 22 nd. 5 FEBRUARY 7, 2016 Ministry Message Rosary Makers Ministry will meet on Monday, February 8 th, at 9:30 AM in Father Doherty Hall. The Rosary Makers gather together regularly to make rosary beads for missionaries around the world, men and women in our armed forces, hospitals and institutions near and far. New members are always welcome. Helping Hands Ministry will meet on Tuesday, February 9 th, at 9 AM in Father Doherty Hall. Volunteers are always needed to knit, crochet or sew items either at our meetings or at home. Additional volunteers are also needed to iron, cut fabric, stuff pillows, as well as distribute items, that have been made. New members are always welcome!! Any questions please contact the Parish Rectory Office. Saint Joseph Parish Bible Study Series will meet on Tuesday, February 9 nd, from 6:30 PM to 8 PM in Father Doherty Hall. Do You Believe The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy This program will begin on February 10 th (Ash Wednesday) from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM in Father Doherty Hall of Saint Joseph. Additional program materials are available, so you may still register for this program by contacting the Parish Rectory Office at Altar Servers Needed Both Youth and Adult Altar Servers assist the Priest during Mass. The major responsibilities of this ministry include carrying the processional cross and candles, holding the Missal for the priest, assisting in the preparation of the gifts of bread and wine, and the ringing of the bells during the consecration. We are looking for children and youth who have made their First Holy Communion and are in the 4 th Grade through high school. We are also looking for young adults and adults who might be interested in serving in this ministry. Training is provided. Saint Joseph Parish Red Cross Blood Drive The Social Action Committee is sponsoring its Annual Red Cross Blood Drive in Father Doherty Hall on Monday, February 22 nd, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. During the winter months, Connecticut s blood supply is so low that there is not enough blood for everyone who needs it. It is easy, safe and convenient to donate; the whole process only takes about an hour. Please try to donate blood on Monday, February 22 nd, and if possible bring a friend or family member with you.
