3 A s h e s a r e burned. They are spent. They are black and grey, charred and useless. Ashes are universal all things, when put into a fire with enough heat, will turn to ashes. Ashes remind us that all things are temporary in our world, including us. Next to taxes, it s said that the only other certainty in life is that we will all, o n e d a y, b e c o m e ashes dust our lives will be spent. Death, sinfulness, repentance these are the things that these ashes symbolize for us. Ash Wednesday reminds us first that we are dust, and to dust we will return. Life is fleeting. Time is short. And the ashes remind us that we are fallen, and we can t get up on our own. We need God s help. We need God s forgiveness and God s grace. We need God s love. A Reflection in Preparation for Ash Wednesday as shared by Helen... And that, brothers and sisters, is the hope that is smeared in ash on our foreheads, that God s love has reached through our sinfulness, through the grim shadow of death, to the dust and the ashes of human life. We may be dust, but dust that we are, we are loved. As Paul writes, we are accounted dead... and y e t t e r r i f i c a l l y alive. We have nothing, and yet by God s love we have it all. Nothing in this world, even death, can separate you from God s love in Jesus Christ. That is the secret scratched in ashes and imposed upon our foreheads. Nothing can separate you from God s love. 4 We would like to thank Don Williams for his service as Senior Warden and welcome Susan Adams as the new Senior Warden. We also would like to welcome Shirley Brunton and welcome back Patrick Jacobs to the Vestry. Vestry Minutes from 12/13/2015 The Holiday Sweet Shoppe made about $2200. As of the end of November, we had a general income $109, and expenses of $67, with income over expenses of $39, PRESENT: Reverend Helen Tester, Don Williams Sr. Warden, Johanna Peterson Jr. Warden, Carolyn Hansen Treasurer, Susan Adams Clerk, Ed Martin, Pat Jacobs, Cindy Morse, Thom Fallin. Deacon Gregg Schneider Absent - Kathy Miller TREASURER S RE- PORT: The Holiday Sweet Shoppe made about $2200. As of the end of November, we had a general income $109, and expenses of $67, with income over expenses of $39, Treasurer s report approved (Adams, Morse). We voted to designate $150 a month as a an equity allowance for housing for the year for Rev. Helen Tester. We voted to designate the following as the check signers: Darlene Harvey, Anita Williams, Nancy Williams, and Cindy Morse. Carolyn suggested that we pay our sexton, Jenny Williams a salary of $680 per month starting 1/1/16. This was approved (Jacobs, Martin). We need to determine how to spend any surplus we have in the budget; Carolyn is projecting a possible $10,000 surplus. Treasury report approved (Fallin, Morse). JUNIOR WARDEN: Johanna presented the snow plow agreement. We have been using Hankster s Motor Sports. The price for clearing two inches or more of snow for the year by 9 a.m. is $2200. Motion passed to hire them again (Adams, Fallin). Johanna presented an idea to have a basket or little box with warm coats/hats/gloves/ etc outside with a sign saying I m not lost; please take me if you need me to stay warm this winter. WORSHIP COM- MITTEE Worship will change so that we do not do a hymn after the gospel. People will be thinking of the gospel words just before the sermon, not the hymn. Sometimes we ll do the psalm responsively. She will do ashes to go 4

7 St. Paul s Episcopal Church Still Kickin for the Kingdom of God Join us February 28th as we kick off our 175th Anniversary Celebration after the service. We will enjoy Pretzels and Soup and each other s fellowship. We will also begin to hear stories/memories from our Sisters and Brothers. In the next few weeks, you will be receiving a Prayer List. Each day offer up a prayer for members of our church family and those close to us. We are beginning to plan for a Homecoming Celebration. This will be a time to invite all those who have been connected to St. Paul s to come back and celebrate our 175th Anniversary! If you know of someone we should invite, contact Johanna P. Stay tuned for further information. Not only are we beginning to share and collect memories, We are beginning to share and collect memorabilia. If there is something you would like to share from St. Paul s history, please leave it in the church office. Make sure that it is clearly labeled with your name. 10 Continued from Page 4 EVANGELISM COM- MITTEE: We need more bread for outside on Sundays CHRISTIAN EDU- CATION: Johanna Peterson said the children will do the pageant on Dec 24 and Epiphany. Gregg reported that the adults are studying Rich Warren s Purpose of Christmas. During Epiphany there will be a study of Luke s Gospel. FELLOWSHIP COMMIT- TEE: Cindy said that having food after church increases fellowship. We discussed the need to know who is responsible each week and that people check with those who have signed up before bringing extra food. The weekly informing people who is bringing food may help with this. STEWARDSHIP COM- MITTEE: Thom Fallin said that we gave pledge cards to 69, 17 increased, 4 decreased, and 18 stayed the same. There were 3 new pledges. Three people usually give but did not pledge. If the amount they usually give is included, we can expect $109,593 and only $99,059 without the three estimates. Last year we had $88,000 in pledges. Helen said that we need to put up two typical Episcopal signs in the neighborhood, at least one on a busy street. BUDGET COMMITTEE: This committee will consist of Helen, Johanna, Carolyn, Don, and Thom. OUTREACH: Ed Martin said that there is no news from Caritas. Susan reported that the Hands of Faith will be the end of January OTHER COMMENTS: Thom reported about the 175 th anniversary. Feb. 28 lands during lent, but we will have a pretzel and soup lunch. He said we could do a prayer a day for each member of the church during that year. A committee will meet after church on Jan 17 to discuss it. We discussed the problem of not knowing who is in charge of various ministries or church functions. We could put it in the directory or newsletter. Faithfully Submitted by Susan Adams 10

For every exercise hour or pound of weight loss, the Princeton Club will donate 10 pounds of food to your designated hunger-relief organization, up to 1 million pounds! Register today at the Million Pound Challenge website as a Team or as an Individual! Report your exercise or weight loss weekly. The website will remain open through April 30 to record your results even if the 1 million pounds of food is distributed sooner. An awards ceremony for the Top Teams, based on results reported through April 30, will be held in May. Please also spread the word to friends, family and associates and ask them to sign up (either as part of your team, their own team or an individual). We appreciate your continued support!
