Shyshkowich Council #8925 was granted a Charter on March 27, GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE Grand Knight Br. Michael Kiernicki BROTHER KNIGHTS; Here we are at the beginning of November and I am still amazed how quickly our summer passed by and fall is approaching winter! Being two months into our new Columbian year we have already completed a number of Council events such as the distribution of winter parkas under the Coats for Kids program, preparation and serving the Thanksgiving Dinner at the Welcome Home, portering residents for Sunday Service at the Holy Family Home and providing a meal at the Immaculate Conception Church drop-in center. Coming up this week is our annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser and the Remembrance Day Service and luncheon. Having had the honour of been involved with several of these events and witnessing the gratitude and smiles of those whom we had served, in my opinion, was the greatest repayment we could ever have received for our efforts. Therefore Brothers, when asked to volunteer to give up some of our precious time, please consider why we are Knights and sign up when the volunteer sheet is passed around or you are asked. I also ask that you make a special effort to attend our business meetings so that we can pass the important business and monetary items and allow our Council to continue to do our good work. Dennis Wawrykow Brother Knights, First of all, congratulations and thank you to the Brothers who have been coming to our monthly meetings. We need your participation to conduct the business of the Council. Secondly, I would like to make it easier for our Brother Knights to come to meetings---to remove what may be some obstacles for some of us. Every once in awhile it is helpful to have a reminder of certain matters of procedure and protocol. It is easy to forget certain points and to fall into bad habits. With that in mind, let's consider some points from our Council's memo RESPONSIBLITIES FOR A PRO- DUCTIVE MEETING --- Some Reminders 1. Sometimes we spend too much time on one point: a. For Chairmen of committees, this means that your report needs to be brief and to the point. b. Moreover, an executive or council meeting is not a planning meeting for our specific events. The chairman presents his report, answers questions, and we move on. We don t get bogged down on little details. The chairman will address the issues with the event team. c. For all of us: If you have ideas or strong feelings about how things should be done --- join the team that is working on that event or project. 2. Sometimes there is too much discussion on the side : No socializing or side-meetings...not even Council business should be discussed on the side...and we have the coffee and doughnuts at the conclusion of the meeting for socializing. 3. Please stand when it is your turn to speak...others do it... you can too!... unless you have a physical ailment which makes it difficult. Brothers, each of us has a responsibility to help make the meetings the best they can be. This includes participating and giving comments when appropriate; it also means listening to what is being said, so that repetition is not necessary. Again, thanks to all Brothers who have come to help guide our Council. Of course no one can be there all the time, but all are always welcome---please come when you can. SHYSHKOWICH COUNCIL #8925 Page 3 of Grey Cup Sports Raffle and 2017 Super Bowl Sports Raffle 2016 Grey Cup Sports Raffle As I write our submission for the November bulletin ticket sales are progressing well with all 900 tickets from the Blue series distributed to Brother Knights for sale. 510 Blue tickets stubs have been returned sold with 390 outstanding as I write this report. My records show 20 tickets are left of the 900 from the Green series which is probably an accounting error given neither Br. Don, Br. Mike or myself have any tickets left to distribute (they will show up eventually). 561 tickets stubs from the Green series have been returned sold leaving 339 outstanding. Our Raffle License must be displayed at point of sale i.e. Malls, Church vestibule on the Bulletin Board and on the Parish Hall Bulletin board. To return sold or unsold tickets please contact at their respective homes either Brothers Don Gulchak at , Mike Samec at or Larry Trach at You may also return all sold or unsold tickets and money as soon as possible at Sunday Liturgy, or at the latest the Monday, November 14th council meeting as this is less than 2 weeks before the Grey Cup game. The 104th edition of the Grey Cup will be played on November 27, 2016, at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario to decide the champion for the 2016 CFL season. Go Bombers Go!!! 2017 Super Bowl Sports Raffle We received our license for two (2) series of Super Bowl Pool tickets on LGA Raffle Lottery License LGA RF. The tickets have been ordered, printed and they were picked up Oct. 31 st. They will be available for our Nov Council mtg. for distribution and sales or earlier by contacting Brothers Don Gulchak at , Mike Samec at or Larry Trach at These tickets are great sellers at Grey Cup parties so please ensure you secure your allotment prior to the 2016 Grey Cup. The 2017 Super Bowl LI (51) is set to be played on Feb. 5, 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Fraternally, Br. J. Larry Trach Raffle Chair I.C.C.D. SALES Brothers, Ticket sales at mall sittings are very soft, as are books purchased by our brothers. Ticket sales to date are about 1/2 as to the same period last year. We still have two months to go before the early bird draw and your chance to win 1 of 10 $ prizes. Please call me if you need additional books, or maybe that Christmas gift for your brother-in-law is hard to find so why not purchase a book for $20.00 and make him happy. Thank-you to those brothers who purchased one or two books and look forward to seeing the rest of our Knights purchasing books. REMEMBER 50% of sales go back to our Council so we may help those in need. Don Gulchak Chair I.C.C.D Fundraiser OLD JOKES Two elderly Wal-Mart greeters were sitting on a bench at the entry way when one turns to the other and says, "Slim, I'm 73 years old now and I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?' Slim says, "I feel just like a new-born baby." Really, Like a new-born baby?" Yep. No hair, no teeth and I think I just wet my pants." An eighty-year-old man's golf game was hampered by poor eyesight. He could hit the ball well but he couldn't see where it went. So his doctor teamed him up with a ninety-year-old man who had perfect eyesight and was willing to go along to serve as a spotter. The eighty-year-old man hit the first ball and asked his companion if he saw where it landed. "Yep," said the ninety-year-old. "Where did it go?" the eighty-year-old demanded. The ninety-year old replied, "I don't remember." NOTICE OF MOTION Motion made by Br. Dave Gnutel and seconded by Br. Larry Trach at the October 11 th Business meeting to increase our donation to the Welcome Home by an additional $900. The $900 is in addition to the $100 already approved for the Welcome Home in our 2016/17 budget. The $1,000 donation will go toward repairs to the Welcome Home. This item will be voted upon at our November 14th Business meeting.

Carl Brosch My Dear Brothers: In October, we gave thanks for all the blessings in our lives, our families, friends and our health, but let s not forget to give thanks to our Brothers in our councils, for they and their families are the essential for making our councils successful. Take a moment next time you see a Brother Knight to personally thank him and his family for all that they contribute to your council and parish, even it is just for being there! Personal contact and building relationships is one of the keys to building stronger councils and growing your membership. This is especially true when it comes to recruiting new prospects for your council. Getting to know your prospects, even just a little, makes the job of approaching them to discuss the benefits of the Knights of Columbus that much easier if there is some personal contact and familiarity with them and their family before you make your pitch. It puts everyone more at ease. The last few months I have been promoting our new partnership with Catholic Missions in Canada ( ww.cmic.info/), please visit their website for some great stories and information. I am hoping that councils are making preparations for an event or project to raise funds to assist Catholic Missions in Canada and involving the entire parish in this effort. There is a great need for our help in our own backyard, with seven out of ten provinces having mission parishes. We are asking Catholic Missions in Canada to use monies raised in Manitoba to support Missions within any of the five Dioceses in Manitoba. A 5 minute video is posted on our website for you to use and share with your members and your parish, please use it. Direct donations can be made on their website at donation.cmic.info/. Be sure to check the Corporate check box, include your council Name and number in the comments box and include Knights of Columbus Manitoba in the Company box so we can track council donation statistics within our jurisdiction. We had limited success with our October Membership Blitzes and I know that some councils are holding their blitzes in November, so I want to encourage all councils to continue their efforts in membership recruiting. The State Board and I are available to help with your membership activities, you just need to call! With the Christmas season only a couple of months away, just a reminder of the Keep Christ in Christmas Colouring Contest. Information was sent to councils in last month s mailing and is also on our website. We will also be entering our Keep Christ in Christmas float once again in the Santa Claus Parade. We are continuing to accept donations from Councils to build up our funds for the purchase ($10,000) of a permanent float trailer. Volunteers will also be needed to assemble the float in November and candy donations will be needed that we can hand out to the children lining the parade route. Please call our Worthy State Secretary, Dan Shepherd, if you have some time to assist with this project. We have also sent out information to councils to preorder and purchase our Keep Christ in Christmas buttons which were so successful last year. Again we ask that you donate any proceeds from the sale of these buttons to your local food bank, Christmas Cheer Board or any other worthy charity to assist them in their efforts during the Christmas season. Shyshkowich Council # 8925 will host the annual Remembrance Day Service on Friday, November 11, Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. followed by a panakhyda service. Please assemble in the Parish Auditorium at 9:30 am. After the service, all the Br. Knights, families and guests are invited to a light warm luncheon with dainties served in the church auditorium. Dress code is requested. Baked Goods Donation Request Baked goods such as cookies, muffins, tarts, fudge, squares, cakes, cheesecakes, and loaves, fruit, cheese, pickles etc. The sky is the limit! Please drop off your donations at St Joseph s Parish Auditorium Friday, November 11 after 9:30 am Every little bit helps. We appreciate your donations! On November 11th, Manitoba State Council and Manitoba District - Fourth Degree will be holding our Annual Remembrance Day Service, hosted by Joseph C. Stangl K.S.G. 5 November 2016 FR. SHYSHKOWICH COUNCIL STATE CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE Father Michael Kwitkowski Dear Brothers, Vive Jésus! Слава Ісусу! Vivat Jesus! The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy comes to an end this month. We, Brother Knights, have much to do, should we choose it. There will be closing ceremonies in each of the Archdioceses at which we all should participate as individuals with our spouses and families. We especially should offer to assist in any way at these events especially with honour guards. But there is much more we can do before that last day arrives. It has been a wondrous year for those who took advantage of the untold grace offered by the Church and explained by Pope Francis and our local hierarchy on numerous occasions. During this year hundreds of millions throughout the earth were reconciled to our Lord in total conversion or, often, re-conversion. We made pilgrimages to local Holy Doors and/or performed works of mercy. Countless numbers of the Faithful obtained for themselves the Jubilee Plenary Indulgence and many obtained that indulgence for deceased loved ones throughout the year. ( But there are some that - for one reason or another have not. This is a real opportunity for our councils throughout the province to perform a service to our fellow Catholics. How so? We can yet organize within reason a mini pilgrimage for whoever would like to visit one of the local Holy Doors. If transportation can be organized, fantastic! If that is too complicated, at least a date could be set and people encouraged to come out to a Holy Door location. Perhaps one of the local Priests could be asked to be available for Confessions on that day. Plan it to #8925 Page 5 of 5 coincide around the time of the scheduled Eucharistic Liturgy, unless a special Mass/Divine Liturgy could be offered for the pilgrims. Besides visits to a Holy Door, do not forget the option of performing one of the fourteen Works of Mercy (always needed in our parishes and wider society!). This Jubilee Year has proven to be a sort of microcosm of the earthly pilgrimage that each of us makes from the moment of our conception to the minute that we breath our last breath. Some of us seemed to have taken little interest in the Jubilee. Some, to date, have neither made the effort to visit one of the many Holy Door sites around the province, nor even perform a work of mercy for the sake of obtaining the plenary indulgence for themselves. How many took advantage of this perfect excuse to explore a total change of life? However, others have met this year with excitement. Their enthusiasm grew day by day as they learned more about the untold grace that was being extended to us. Some made the joyful sacrifice of fulfilling the required actions of personal renewal to obtain the indulgence not only for themselves, but for as many as they could. On the other hand, again, some chose to remain ignorant about it all. Some chose to consider the grace of the Holy Year as unnecessary. Because of that, they lost out, as did the Church around them. The Jubilee Year has a beginning and an end, as does our journey through life. The Jubilee Year offers us amazing, unmerited grace for us simply to receive and benefit from. So does the Lord offer us the awesome gift of this life and life eternal. We can accept the gift or ignore it. How truly unfortunate if we choose the latter. There is still time! Let us take advantage of the Jubilee Year before it comes to a close and let us invite our brother Knights and our Brothers and Sisters in the faith to join us as we, in turn, join our Pastors!
