ANNOUNCEMENTS A NOTE REGARDING COMMUNION The Holy Orthodox Church understands Communion to mean that we have all things in common, sharing an identical Faith, and only those who are members of the Orthodox Church and who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting and recent confession may participate in Holy Communion. Following reception of Holy Communion, we should stay in the church until the conclusion of the Liturgy. Our fellowship begins after we venerate the Cross and receive the Blessed Bread (Antidoron - of which all may partake). 7 PANTOCRATOR ICON PROJECT ICON PROJECT DONATIONS: The last Special General Meeting of St. Vladimir s Ukrainian Orthodox Congregation in Calgary approved commencement of the writing of the Pantocrator Icon in our church contingent on sufficient pledges and donations being received. We require $25,000 in donations for this project to be fully funded. LEGAL PROTECTION FOR FREEDOM OF WORSHIP: Proposed changes to the Criminal Code of Canada which provides legal protection for Churches and individuals to worship freely are currently before Parliament. One of the proposed changes will remove the only provision in the Criminal Code that directly protects the rights of communities and individuals to freely practice their religion. Please contact our Parish Council for more information on this important matter and what action can be taken to prevent these changes from being implemented. ADDRESS UPDATES! There you will be able to see and enjoy video clips of recent congregation events. * * * * * THE VENERABLE EUPHROSYNE OF ALEXANDRIA Commemorated on September 25 / October 8 Saint Euphrosyne of Alexandria was born at the beginning of the fifth century in the city of Alexandria, Egypt. She was the only child in her family of illustrious and rich parents. Since her mother died early, she was raised by her father, Paphnutius, a deeply believing and pious Christian. He frequented a monastery, the Ihumen of which was his spiritual Father. When Euphrosyne turned eighteen, her father wanted her to marry. He went to the monastery to his spiritual Father to receive his blessing for the planned marriage of his daughter. The Ihumen conversed with the daughter and gave

12 her his blessing, but Saint Euphrosyne yearned for the monastic life. She secretly accepted tonsure from a wandering monk, left her father s house and decided to enter a monastery in order to lead her life in solitude and prayer. She feared, however, that in a women s monastery her father would find her. Calling herself the eunuch Smaragdos, she went to the very same men s monastery which she had frequently visited with her father since childhood. The monks did not recognize Euphrosyne dressed in men s garb, and so they accepted her into the monastery. Here, in a solitary cell, Saint Euphrosyne spent 38 years in works, fasting and prayer, and attained a high level of spiritual accomplishment. Her father grieved over the loss of his beloved daughter and more than once, on the advice of the Ihumen, conversed with the monk Smaragdos, revealing his grief and receiving spiritual comfort. Before her death, the nun Euphrosyne revealed her secret to her grieving father and asked that no one but he should prepare her body for burial. Having buried his daughter, Paphnutius distributed all of his wealth to both the poor and to the monastery, and then accepted monasticism. For ten years, right up to his own death, he laboured in the cell of his daughter prior to his own blessed repose.
