ALL: How great are Your works, O Lord* You have made all things in wisdom. Epistle (Hebrews 6:13-20) A reading from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Hebrews. Brothers and sisters, when God made a promise to Abraham, because He had no one greater by whom to swear, He swore by Himself, saying, I will surely bless you and multiply you. And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Human beings, of course, swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as 2 confirmation puts an end to all dispute. In the same way, when God desired to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of His purpose, He guaranteed it by an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus, a forerunner on our behalf, has entered, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Gospel (Mark 9:17-31) AT THAT TIME someone from the crowd answered Him, Teacher, I brought You my son; he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak; and whenever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so. He (Jesus) answered them, You faithless generation, how much longer must I be among you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me. And they brought the boy to Him. When the spirit saw Him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the father, How long has this been happening to him? And he said, From childhood. It has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him, but if You are able to do anything, have

Alternate Ambo Prayer O Chris our God, You uphold and restore all who have been attacked and overcome, for by taking flesh from the holy Virgin Mary, You came to us without leaving the presence of the Father. You came into this world to lift our nature from its fall among thieves who kill the spirit. We were stripped of everlasting life, and were wounded cruelly by them, yet You deemed us worthy of care, and restored us to our ancient fatherland. Master, heal the bruises and bind the wounds of our souls by Your precious Blood poured out for us and by Your holy anointing given to us. Deliver us from the constant blows of unseen enemies who, in their desire to destroy Your grace in us, hasten to rob us of faith and hope in You. In Your love for mankind, do not deprive us of Your healing salvation, so that after we are healed and cleansed, we may be made worthy of the community of the first-born inscribed in heaven. In light of recent events in Ukraine, His Beatitude Sviatoslav has asked the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church to renew the Consecration of Ukraine to the Mother of God on Sunday, April 6, beseeching her intervention for peace and accord among all peoples. APRIL 12: CONFESSION & ANOINTING OF THE SICK on Lazarus Saturday, April 12 th. The church will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm for private prayer and confessions. Priests will be on duty throughout the day to hear confessions. Divine Liturgy with the Sacramental Anointing of the Sick (for healing of body and soul) will be celebrated at 9:00 am. Everyone present for the Liturgy may approach to receive the Sacrament of Anointing. UCWLC MUSEUM The museum is open every 1 st and 3 rd Sunday. APRIL 18-19: HOLY FRIDAY-SATURDAY VIGIL WITH THE SHROUD OF TURIN REPLICA. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Please volunteer to take part in the Prayer Vigil, which begins after the 11:00 am Vespers Service on Friday April 18, and ends on Saturday, April 19th, after the Service at the Tomb at 7:00 pm. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Veneration of the Holy Shroud (Turin Replica) on Holy Friday and Holy Saturday Please remember that on HOLY FRIDAY, at the Vesper Service, we symbolically stand beneath the cross with Mother Mary and John, as Jesus gives up His spirit into the hands of His heavenly Father. Then, after the reading of the Gospel, together with Joseph of Arimathea and others, we symbolically help take the body of Jesus down from the cross and carry it to the holy tomb for burial. As we process around the church with the Holy Shroud (the Shroud of Turin Replica this year), we re-enact the transfer of Jesus body to the tomb, where he was wrapped in a 5 special linen burial cloth and placed in the tomb. Symbolically, we are there. We assist with the burial of Jesus and venerate his body, by kissing his wounds imprinted on the Shroud. ON HOLY SATURDAY, the body of Jesus rested in the tomb, while His Divine Soul remained in Hades. Throughout this day, we keep solemn and prayerful vigil at HIS TOMB in gentle silence. To maintain this solemnity and respect for Jesus death and burial throughout the day and time of the VIGIL, the Saturday Basket Blessings (which should normally take place only after the Sunday morning Easter Services) have been transferred to the parish hall. On Holy Saturday, we encourage everyone to first come to the church to pray and to venerate the wounds of Jesus on the Shroud, and then come to the parish hall to bless Easter food in anticipation of the Resurrection (Holy Pascha). The moment of Christ s Resurrection is alluded too at the Service at the Tomb (Nadhrobne in Ukrainian), when the Shroud is taken from the tomb and transferred to the holy altar in silence. The body of the Jesus is gone! THIS SERVICE MARKS THE END OF THE HOLY VIGIL AT THE TOMB. ON EASTER MORNING, as we process around the church three times, we symbolically join the myrrh-bearing women, who make their way to the tomb of Christ to anoint the body of Jesus. As we arrive at the doors of the church and enter in, together with the myrrhbearing women we discover that the tomb is empty. Jesus is Risen! THE CHURCH ITSELF BECOMES THAT EMPTY TOMB! We enter in to celebrate the Eucharist; and as witnesses of the empty tomb, we sing for the first time, CHRIST IS RISEN! AND DURING THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST, CHRIST

6 HIMSELF, RISEN FROM THE DEAD, MANIFESTS HIMSELF TO US and we receive Him in Holy Communion! = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = LAST SUNDAY (MAR 23, 2014) Sunday Collection $3, Donations to Parish $10.00 Donation to Preservation Fund - = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = The Fourth Sunday of Lent: Feast of our Righteous Father John (Climacus) of Sinai, Author of the Ladder of Divine Ascent On March 30 and on the Fourth Sunday of Holy Lent the Eastern Church commemorates our Righteous Father John Climacus. He is called Climacus (which means Ladder ) due to his authorship of the great spiritual work The Ladder of Divine Ascent. His commemoration is designated by the Church on one of the Sundays of Lent as his life and writings affirm him as a supreme bearer and proponent of Christian asceticism. The ascetic example of this great Saint of the Church inspires us in our Lenten journey. Life of the Saint There is almost no information about St John's origins. One tradition suggests that he was born in Constantinople around the year 570, and was the son of Sts. Xenophon and Maria. John went to Sinai when he was sixteen, submitting to Abba Martyrios as his instructor and guide. After four years, St. John was tonsured as a monk. Abba Strategios, who was present at St John's tonsure, predicted that he would become a great luminary in the Church of Christ. For nineteen years St. John progressed in monasticism in obedience to his spiritual Father. After the death of Abba Martyrios, St. John embarked on a solitary life, settling in a wild place called Thola, where he spent forty years laboring in silence, fasting, prayer, and tears of penitence. It is not by chance that in THE LADDER St John speaks about tears of repentance: Just as fire burns and destroys the wood, so pure tears wash away every impurity, both external and internal. His holy prayer was strong and efficacious, as may be seen from an example from the life of the God-pleasing saint. St John had a disciple named Moses. Once, the saint ordered his disciple to bring dung to fertilize the vegetable garden. When he had finished the work, Moses lay down to rest under the shade of a large rock, because of the scorching heat of summer. At that very moment, St John was in his cell in a light sleep. Suddenly, a man of remarkable appearance appeared to him and awakened the holy ascetic, reproaching him, John, why do you sleep so heedlessly, when Moses is in danger? St John immediately woke up and began to pray for his disciple. When Moses returned in the evening, St John asked whether any sort of misfortune had befallen him. The monk replied, A large rock would have fallen on me as I slept beneath it at noon, but I left that place because I thought I heard you calling me. St. John did not tell his disciple of his vision, but gave thanks to God. St John ate the food which is permitted by the monastic rule, but only in moderation. He did not sleep very much, only enough to keep 6

7 up his strength, so that he would not ruin his mind by unceasing vigil. I do not fast excessively," he said of himself, "nor do I give myself over to intense all-night vigil, nor lay upon the ground, but I restrain myself..., and the Lord soon saved me. The following example of St John's humility is noteworthy. Gifted with discernment, and attaining wisdom through spiritual experience, he lovingly received all who came to him and guided them to salvation. One day some envious monks reproached him for being too talkative, and so St. John kept silence for a whole year. The monks realized their error, and they went to the ascetic and begged him not to deprive them of the spiritual profit of his conversation. Concealing his ascetic deeds from others, St John sometimes withdrew into a cave, but reports of his holiness spread far beyond the vicinity. Visitors from all walks of life came to him, desiring to hear his words of edification and salvation. After forty years of solitary asceticism, he was chosen as igumen (abbot) of Sinai s St Catherine s Monastery when he was seventy-five. St John governed the holy monastery for four years. At the request of the abbot of the Raithu monastery, St John wrote the incomparable Ladder, a book of instruction for monks who wished to attain spiritual perfection. Knowing his wisdom and spiritual gifts the abbot requested St John to write down whatever was necessary for the salvation of those in the monastic life. Such a book would be a ladder fixed on the earth (Gen. 28:12), leading people to the gates of Heaven. St John felt that such a task was beyond his ability, yet out of obedience he fulfilled the request. The saint called his work THE LADDER, for the book is a fixed ladder leading from earthly things to the Holy of 7 Holies... The thirty steps of spiritual perfection correspond to the thirty years of the Lord's age. When we have completed these thirty steps, we will find ourselves with the righteous and will not stumble. THE LADDER begins with renunciation of worldliness, and ends with God, Who is love (1 John 4:8). Although the book was written for monks, any Christian living in the world will find it an unerring guide for ascending to God, and a support in the spiritual life. The twenty-second step of THE LADDER deals with various forms of vainglory. St John writes: When I fast, I am vainglorious; and when I permit myself food in order to conceal my fasting from others I am again vainglorious about my prudence. When I dress in fine clothing, I am vanquished by vanity, and if I put on drab clothing, again I am overcome by vanity. If I speak, vainglory defeats me. If I wish to keep silence, I am again given over to it. Wherever this thorn comes up, it stands with its points upright. A vain person seems to honor God, but strives to please men rather than God. People of lofty spirit bear insult placidly and willingly, but only the holy and righteous may hear praise without harm. When you hear that your neighbor or friend has slandered you behind your back, or even to your face, praise and love him. It is not the one who reproaches himself who shows humility, for who will not put up with himself? It is the one who is slandered by another, yet continues to show love for him. Whoever is proud of his natural gifts, intelligence, learning, skill in reading, clear

8 enunciation, and other similar qualities, which are acquired without much labor, will never obtain supernatural gifts. Whoever is not faithful in small things (Lk 16:10), is also unfaithful in large things, and is vainglorous. It often happens that God humbles the vainglorious, sending a sudden misfortune. If prayer does not destroy a proud thought, we bring to mind the departure of the soul from this life. And if this does not help, let us fear the shame which follows dishonor. For whoever humbles himself shall be exalted, and whoever exalts himself shall be humbled (Lk 14:11). When those who praise us, or rather seduce us, start to praise us, let us recall our many sins, then we shall find that we are not worthy of what they say or do to honor us. In THE LADDER St John describes the ascent toward spiritual perfection, which is essential for anyone who wishes to save his soul. It is a written account of his thoughts, based on the collected wisdom of many wise ascetics, and on his own spiritual experience. The book is a great help on the path to truth and virtue. With the exception of the scriptures themselves and St Athanasius Life of Anthony, it is the most copied and influential book in Christian history. The steps of THE LADDER proceed gradually from strength to strength on the path of perfection. The summit is not reached suddenly, but gradually, as the Savior says: "The Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force" (Mt 11:12). В ньому маємо, неначе якір душі, безпечний та міцний, що входить аж до середни за завісу, куди вийшов за нас, як претеча, Ісус, ставши архиєреєм повіки, на зразок Мелхиседека. Стихи Алилуя 1. 11 рівень, забезпечити функціонування всіх державних організмів, які, як ми бачимо, були зруйновані». «Наприклад, стоїть завдання наново створити українську армію, наново творити інші елементи державної структури», зазначив Блаженніший Святослав. Але, за його спостереженнями, влада робить багато помилок, зокрема кадрових. «Спілкуюся з багатьма людьми, які мені сигналізують, що часом кадрові зміни не зважають на конкретних людей та осіб. Церква завжди захищає особу. І коли робляться певні зміни, потрібно дуже делікатно підходити до оцінки діяльності певних осіб, зокрема держслужбовців, суддів. Яким чином вони діяли в той критичний час? Бо ми всі були свідками системи, що когось навмисне змушували робити порушення чи злочин, щоб тримати його у свої руках. Отож людина ставала заручником злочинної системи, ставала співучасником злочину. Проте є дуже багато чесних людей, які навіть у таких критичних моментах не здалися. Гадаю, щоб сьогодні оновити наше суспільство, треба знайти тих чесних людей. А вони є», наголосив Глава Церкви. Він вважає, що перед урядом національного порятунку стоїть завдання врятувати не лише державу, а й добрих людей і службовців. «Треба врятувати ті здорові сили, які є моральним, твердим капіталом нашого суспільства. Покладаючись на такого типу людей, потрібно відбудовувати державні органи й державні структури. Не спішімо огульно когось засуджувати. Треба дуже делікатно і виважено підходити до кожної особи, коли виноситься рішення», закликав Предстоятель УГКЦ. Департамент інформації УГКЦ 11 Глава УГКЦ переконаний, що перш ніж проводити люстрацію, необхідно створити моральні правила, за якими вона повинна відбуватися Щоб говорити про чесну люстрацію моральної позиції політика або чиновника, необхідно створити моральні правила, критерії, за якими це повинно відбуватися. Інакше люстрація може перетворитися на інструмент безоглядного приниження людини. Я з великою тривогою спостерігаю, як дискутується ця тема в суспільстві. На жаль, є тенденція люстрацію перетворити на банальне зведення рахунків», зазначив Предстоятель Церкви. На переконання Глави УГКЦ, у питанні люстрації своє слово повинні б сказати Церкви. «Ми сьогодні роздумуємо і працюємо над тим, щоб запропонувати моральні засади для вироблення закону про люстрацію», сказав Блаженніший Святослав. Він вважає, що нам потрібно вивчити досвід інших країн, зокрема Польщі. «Ми чітко бачимо, що той спосіб, як Польща проводила люстрацію, не був цілком добрим, там було допущено багато помилок, які ми можемо врахувати. Ми можемо справді створити певні правила, які б, з одного боку, захищали гідність людської особи, а з іншого допомогли б будувати політичне суспільство на чесності, прозорості й відкритості, не перетворюючи очищення на безоглядне стихійне «полювання на відьом», зауважив Глава Церкви.
