Bring your lunch and meet new friends! Food Pantry We feel very fortunate at Guardian Angels to have a Food Pantry to help with the needs of the hungry in the Westport/ Roanoke area. While we do utilize Harvesters for the majority of our food supplies, we also depend on the generosity of parishioners. You will find food pledge cards in the pews. This allows parishioners to sign up for a specific item needed in the food pantry, on a monthly basis. Please put completed pledge cards in the offertory baskets. 3 EMERGENCIES AND DISASTERS CHOKING EMERGENCY If you come across or witness someone choking, one person should call 911. If the person is conscious but not able to breathe or talk: Give back blows Give up to 5 blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. If the person is still choking, do thrusts Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around his or her waist. Place your clenched fist just above the person s navel. Grab your fist with your other hand. Quickly pull inward and upward as if trying to lift the person up. Perform a total of 5 abdominal thrusts. If the blockage is still not dislodged, continue cycles of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until the object is coughed up or the person starts to breathe or cough. Next week we will discuss recognizing individuals in shock and how to help them. Retreat There is a retreat for all women of the parish on Saturday, July 15 in the Parish Hall, from 10am till 2pm. Sr. Linda will guide this time together, looking at our relationship with God using Scripture and our personal experiences. The Retreat will include a potluck lunch. Come and meet new friends! Contributing Stocks and Bonds Gifts of securities (stocks, bonds and mutual funds), especially if appreciated in value over the years, can cost you (or your heirs) a lot in capital gains taxes. Event for Upcoming Solar Eclipse Leading up to this year s total solar eclipse, Marillac Center, Leavenworth, Kan., is offering a two-day retreat centered on the cosmic Christ and the interrelatedness of all creation as understood by Father Teilhard de Chardin, Jesuit priest and paleontologist. Teilhard s Mysticism: Spiraling into the Cosmic Christ is the theme for the Aug to be presented by Sister Kathleen Duffy, SSJ. The cost for the retreat is $125 (meals included); scholarships are available. Overnight accommodations can be made at a per night rate. Before you schedule any events, please make sure your event as been cleared by the parish staff and is on the main parish calendar. When your group conducts any type of gathering, please make sure the space is left clean and any supplies you use have been replenished. Thanks so much for your help in keeping our facilities clean and orderly for all groups. Sacristan Openings at Guardian Angels We currently have openings for Sacristans at Guardian Angels. The duties of the Sacristan vary by church, but include: Prepare the Holy Eucharist for the celebration of the mass, which includes readying the wine, water and bread and putting them in place for the start of the mass. Arrange any needed books. Arrange ciborium and vessels In addition, Sacristans need to be reliable and organized. No experience is required. If you are interested in this ministry, please call Deacon Tyrone in the parish office. Attic to Basement Sale The Attic to Basement Sale will take place November 4th, We will not be accepting items for the sale until after August 1, Interested in Catholicism? Are you, or someone you know, interested in the Catholic faith, have questions, would like to know more? There will be Inquiry sessions on Wednesday, July 19 or Wednesday, August 9 (both at 7pm) for anyone who is interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith, what is involved in the RCIA process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) which is the way adults are prepared for becoming Catholic. There is no commitment, just an opportunity at this session to ask questions and seek information. It has been one year since Bishop Johnston assigned me here at Guardian Angels as the Pastoral Administrator. During this time it has been a joy to reconnect with old friends and make many more new ones. Upon my arrival, the parish was facing some serious challenges and still does; there had been a decline in membership and financial support, buildings that need attention and a waning commitment to volunteerism. We have seen great improvement in many of these areas over the last year, membership is up and our financial support is slowly improving and I thank you for that. There is a plan to slowly improve our buildings infrastructure but it will be a long slow process due to the cost. We have also been blessed with a number of parishioners who have stepped up with their volunteering and have made a difference. Although I believe we are headed in the right direction, it will take some time for us to achieve our goals of making Guardian Angels the shining light in Westport that is selfsufficient and able to provide assistance to all our neighbors in need in our community. But to achieve these goals we need your help. Please consider volunteering for an hour or two at an upcoming event, or volunteer to be a greeter or usher; besides being a great service to the parish you will get a chance at making an impact on someone s life newcomers to our parish need to feel welcomed and appreciated. If we are to continue to grow and flourish as a diverse parish that welcomes and is accepting to all, we have to put in the work. We have to take that leap of faith to help one another and our parish, to become the type of community, parish, church and faith that Christ calls us to be. Next week we will be blessed to have Fr. Andrew Mattingly join us as our Parochial Vicar. I feel confident that you will show him the same love and acceptance that you have shown Fr. Bob and I over the last year. 5 Procedures, Sacraments and Information for Guardian Angels Parish Baptism Contact the parish office after your baby is born, in order to schedule the baptismal class and the date of the baptism. Confirmation, Eucharist & Reconciliation Preparation for this sacrament is offered yearly. Contact the parish office for more information. Funeral Contact the parish office at the time of the death. Marriage Please contact Fr. Bob preferably nine months before your proposed marriage date. Note that it is wise not to make other arrangements until you know your wedding date is available here at our church. Penance Saturday afternoon between 3:00 and 3:45 pm and by appointment at the parish office. Religious Education Sessions for children and families are held monthly. Contact the parish office for more information. Interested in Becoming Catholic? This process is called Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Call Sr. Linda Barringer at the parish office for information on this process. Sick or Hospitalized Contact the parish office when your loved one is sick or admitted to the hospital. Parish Hall Rental Parishioners who have been registered for one year or more, should contact Ms. Linda Battle in the parish office for rental information. Bulletin Announcements Items to be included in the bulletin need to be sent to Kate Riha in the parish office no later than Monday before that Sunday s intended inclusion date. Newcomers Registration Forms are located in the literature holders in the back and at the north entrance to the church.
