3 EMERGENCIES AND DISASTERS can strike quickly and without warning. A disaster or other medical emergency could strike you and those you care about. This could happen anywhere at home, work, school, church or in transit. Of course, we hope that none of us face a disaster or other emergency situation. But when an event occurs, knowing what to do within the critical first few minutes can save lives. In this and in upcoming Bulletins, we are going to address simple things that non-medically trained individuals can do in an emergency. FOR SEVERE BLEEDING Take these actions immediately: Remove any obvious dirt or debris from the wound. Don't remove large or deeply embedded objects. Don't probe the wound or attempt to clean it yet. Your first job is to stop the bleeding. Wear disposable protective gloves if available. Stop the bleeding. Place a sterile bandage or clean cloth on the wound. Press the bandage firmly with your palm to control bleeding. Maintain pressure by binding the wound tightly with a bandage or a piece of clean cloth. Secure with adhesive tape if possible. Use your hands if nothing else is available. Raise the injured part above the level of the heart. Help the injured person lie down, preferably on a rug or blanket to prevent loss of body heat. If possible, elevate the legs. Don't remove the gauze or bandage. If the bleeding seeps through the gauze or other cloth on the wound, add another bandage (or cloth) on top of it. And keep pressing firmly on the area. Next week, quick tips for choking. Event for Upcoming Solar Eclipse Leading up to this year s total solar eclipse, Marillac Center, Leavenworth, Kan., is offering a two-day retreat centered on the cosmic Christ and the interrelatedness of all creation as understood by Father Teilhard de Chardin, Jesuit priest and paleontologist. Teilhard s Mysticism: Spiraling into the Cosmic Christ is the theme for the Aug to be presented by Sister Kathleen Duffy, SSJ. Donation for the retreat is $125 (meals included); scholarships are available. Overnight accommodations can be made at a per night rate. For more information, visit retreats@scls.org; or call Parish Financial Support Due to the fact that we had to submit program materials for this bulletin on 6/23/2017, we will have financial figures for 6/24 and 6/25 next weekend. God cannot be outdone in generosity. St. Ignatius of Loyola Food Pantry We feel very fortunate at Guardian Angels to have a Food Pantry to help with the needs of the hungry in the Westport/Roanoke area. Thank you so much for your generosity! Tuna, canned corn & green beans, bar soap, tooth paste, tooth brushes & shampoo. Guardian Angels is looking for a wooden wardrobe for the Sacristy. We need one that is wide. If you have one that you would like to donate, it would be very appreciated. We are in the process of organizing and freshening the Sacristy. Thanks so much for your consideration! Attention Young Adults If you are interested in hearing about events for young adults at Guardian Angels, please scan the QR code to the right. Shared Parish Space Various groups at Guardian Angels share space for meetings, dinners and gatherings. Before you schedule any events, please make sure your event as been cleared by the parish staff and is on the main parish calendar. When your group conducts any type of gathering, please make sure the space is left clean and any supplies you use have been replenished. Thanks so much for your help in keeping our facilities clean and orderly for all groups. Interested in Catholicism? Are you, or someone you know, interested in the Catholic faith, have questions, would like to know more? There will be an Inquiry session on Wednesday, July 12 at 7pm for anyone who is interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith, what is involved in the RCIA process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) which is the way adults are prepared for becoming Catholic. There is no commitment, just an opportunity at this session to ask questions and seek information. Please contact Sr. Linda at the parish office or her at lbarringer@guardianangelskc.org, if you are interested or if you have questions. Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 2,

Bob Hagan, SJ...Parochial Vicar, ext. 113 Sr. Linda Barringer, MMB...Associate, ext. 107 Ms. Linda Battle...Business Manager, ext. 102 Ms. Judy Dugan...Liturgist, ext. 105 Mr. Leo Hernandez...Maintenance Coordinator Mrs. Iulia-Anca Istrate...Emergency Assistance Coord. ext. 112 Ms. Kate Riha...Administrative Assistant, ext. 101 To report abuse: Ms. Jenifer Valenti...Ombudsman (816) Mass Intentions People often have a mass intention to commemorate the death of a loved one, but mass intentions are a great way to celebrate special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays or weddings. To have a Mass said, please call the office during business hours at (A customary offering of $10 or more is usually given to the church.) Guardian Angels Mission Statement Guardian Angels is a culturally rich Catholic community strengthened and united in faith and worship. We strive to be messengers of hope, making God s Word active in our everyday lives. We promote unity and self-growth, provide outreach to individuals in need and welcome all for fellowship and worship. This weekend all across our nation, celebrations will commemorate our nation s independence. Revolutions continue today, not only on our shores, but around the world, to better the lives of millions in need. America is seen by many as the City on the Hill, a shining example of what can be. For people around the world it is still seen as a place where dreams can come true and a symbol that a person s worth does not depend on his social status, race, color, creed or gender but rather the integrity of the individual. America is the place where diversity is not only welcomed, but thrives. It is a place where individualism and a devote commitment to a greater good can live in harmony and not pose a threat to one another. We as Christians and Catholics understand this philosophy probably better than most, because we live it. Our religion allows us to be individuals and worship in many ways; some are attracted to a more traditional or orthodox approach, while others feel a closer connection with God in a more liberal setting. Either way, we come together to worship as one with all our brothers and sisters around the world, and no matter where we travel when we come into a catholic church we feel a sense of home and belonging. Our religious and national views are founded on many of the same principles; everyone is important, deserves respect and the ability to live with dignity. This is something we cannot lose sight of despite the political rhetoric we may hear from both sides of the aisle, and the secular media today that places one s value on the amount of material goods you own. We must learn to live as we are called to, and continue to work within the framework of this great nation to not only assist our homeless and homebound, but also our unemployed and underemployed, never neglecting any in our society as we remember our moral obligation to all our sisters and brother no matter our differences. So, this weekend as we fire up the grills, chill the drinks, watch the fireworks and visit with family and friends, let not lose sight of how fortunate we are to part of this great nation and the responsibility that comes with it; always attempting to expand basic liberties to those in need, and continue to be the light of hope to oppressed around the world.
