One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning "Charles Carroll of Carrolltown"--a defiant "come and get me if you dare" postscript aimed at the British. Carroll's brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. --Rev. 6 JULY 2, THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORADINARY TIME Which should we do? Turn our backs on our loved ones, or offer hospitality to all who come to us as Christ? Today we are told to do both, and yet there is no inherent contradiction here. Following Christ might mean that we need to be aware both that Christ comes first in our lives, and that losing our life for Christ's sake means to find it. We also are reminded that when we were baptized, we died with Christ, to sin and to the pull of the world, and live with him in a new life. No contradiction, no necessary confusion. Just grace and hope. DYING AND RISING The words of Saint Paul hit us smack in the face: "Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?" (Romans 6:3). This epistle is one of the choices to be read at Catholic funerals. It generally comes as something of a shock to the listeners. But the reading goes on to offer great comfort to us as Christians. "[w]e have died with Christ... we shall also live with him... raised from the dead, [Christ] dies no more... [Christ] lives for God... you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus." HOSPITALITY One of the ways we live in God is to extend God's hospitality to all. As an old Irish rune says, "Often goes the Christ in the stranger's guise." The woman of Shunem offered hospitality to the prophet Elisha in the form of dinner and a place to stay. He rewarded her hospitality with the promise of a son. Christ explains to us just what hospitality means: "Whoever receives you receives me" and shall not lack for a reward. As theologian Paul Wadell teaches, when we offer hospitality, we not only offer food and drink, or a place to stay, or other kindness, we offer ourselves; we offer our attention to a stranger's story, wherein we learn another person's perspective, and in doing so we listen to God's story. In warning us that "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me..." and also, "Whoever finds [their] life will lose it, and whoever loses [their] life for my sake will find it" Jesus proposes that we cultivate detachment from things that we now consider primary in our lives. Christ loves us and wants us to put him first before other commitments or desires. Our hospitality to strangers puts Christ before ourselves in just this way. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company In today s Gospel, Jesus minces no words: whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Few of us will be called to die the way Jesus did. But to be his disciples means having the willingness to lay down our lives with him and for him. Exercising good stewardship of the Gospel requires taking up one s cross daily and following Jesus. There will be dying to do on our way to the Father. It could be unfair treatment, health problems, fatigue, frustration at work, failed relationships, loneliness or sadness. If we, like Jesus, encounter and accept suffering, we will bring the hope of the cross to others. There is no cross the Lord s love cannot transcend. In your reflections this week, consider how your cross, no matter how heavy, might become an instrument of hope and Christ s love. Catholic Stewardship June 2017 e-bulletin

Sign-up sheets are in the back of Church for times you can help set up, sort, straighten, pick up items or pack up what s left over. Anyone who has worked in the past will tell you that it s a lot of work, but very fun to be there and meet your fellow parishioners and visit while you work! (We always have some good lunches and snacks also!) We also need any items you have to donate for the sale.
