What does it mean to belong to a parish? Does it mean to come to church for Sunday worship from time to time and pay the dues? No! It is not. It s more than that. To be a parishioner is to be a part of parish community. It means to be an individual member of one body, the church of Christ - the parish church. Parishioners life is not only about parish services in the temple. It is also social events, parish activities from dinners, retreats, family nights, Pierogy making to food serving at the local shelters. Parishioner is the one who prayers, works and celebrates together with other members of the parish family.

2 We are all blessed with particular talents which we implement in our life here on earth to make a living. We should utilize those talents to benefit the parish community. Living in this individualistic society people often would ask; what is it for me in all of this? Well. Being a part of the parish community has great benefits for us. Community of Christians were established from the very beginning of the church. They were called local churches. Why? Because it is much more easier to practice your faith and to follow the commandments. It is comforting to share the sadness and loss as well as celebrate the happy occasions together with parish family. Christian communities brought something totally different into the world of that time. They introduced unconditional love, kindness and care for one another. Therefore, people were attracted to them. This is what they continue to be. Yes one can pray and be in touch with God on his or her own, but to pray together in a Common worship makes a difference. Common gathering for prayer changes us. Besides, being united with one another through Christ in the Holy Eucharist, we are also changed to better through staying together, accepting one another the way we are with our imperfections. There is something about giving a kiss of peace, embracing one another, getting inspired from each other and even getting frustrated with one another makes a difference. It changed us to better if we are persistent in perfecting ourselves. Just like in the ordinary family there are people who love you dearly and you love them, and the people who test your love. All of it makes you a better person. We are called to perfection by Christ. Parish community provides best ground for that kind of work, through patience, forgiveness and love. 4 Soup er Bowl Sunday TODAY Once again this year, Senior UOL chapter is sponsoring and organizing Soup-er Bowl on Sunday February 3, 2019 after Divine Liturgy. Please come and share a bowl of soup for a good cause. All proceeds will be donated to Soup Kitchen in Ukraine. Our talented Chefs of the parish please create and donate soups for the event. You have a chance to shine with your talents!!! Thank you to all of the volunteers for making and donating soups and supplies. Sunday Services in two Languages Every First Sunday of the Month there will be All English Divine Liturgy at 9:30am followed by All Ukrainian Pro-Liturgy at 11:30am. Due to the Soup-er Bowl Sunday there will be only one bilingual service on Sunday Feb 3, 2019 followed by our 9th Annual Soup-er Bowl Sunday Feast. 5 420 Annual Parish Meeting Parish Annual meeting is Sunday March 10, 2019 following the Divine Liturgy. I ask all of the parish members to mark their calendars and attend the meeting. If the life of our parish community, your parish family is important to you, participate at the meeting!!! Vasyl Sunday School Teachers Corner Sunday School Corner: After a very beautiful Liturgy in our Church Hall our class met and talked about the feast of Theophony which is celebrated on January 19th. It is one the oldest Holy Days and has been celebrated since the 2nd Century. It is the Baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist (his cousin). Mitten Tree On behalf of the Sunday school children and teachers we would like to thank everyone who donated to the Mitten Tree. Your kindness will help keep many hands warm during these cold and frigid days. Church Humor or not A priest tells a joke A priest, who shall we say was "humor impaired," attended a conference to help encourage and better equip pastors for their ministry. Among the speakers were many well-known and dynamic speakers. One such boldly approached the pulpit and, gathering the entire crowd's attention, said, "The best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman that wasn't my wife!" The crowd was shocked! He followed up by saying, "And that woman was my mother!" - The crowd burst into laughter and delivered the rest of his talk, which went over quite well. The next week, the priest decided he'd give this humor thing a try, and use that joke in his sermon. As he surely approached the pulpit that sunny Sunday, he tried to rehearse the joke in his head. It suddenly seemed a bit foggy to him. Getting to the microphone he said loudly, "The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of another woman that was not my wife!" The congregation inhaled half the air in the room. After standing there for almost 10 seconds in the stunned silence, trying to recall the second half of the joke, the pastor finally blurted out, "...and I can't remember who she was!" 7 420
