The Church determined that this celebration would take place each year on the first Sunday of Lent, as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, starting March 11, 843. On this
2 Sunday every year the triumph of the faith of Orthodoxy is celebrated with ceremony. The Icon of Christ, according to St. John Damascus, is a distinct affirmation and a reminder of the fact of His Incarnation, which has a vital significance for the salvation of the faithful, an affirmation which prevails to this day in the Orthodox Church. The celebration of the day includes the procession with the Icon of Christ around the inside of the church with pomp and reverence. The Sunday of Orthodoxy calls upon the people to rededicate themselves to the deep meaning of their faith and to declare in unison, "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all". What is fasting? THE ORIGIN OF FASTING One may ask how the Institute of fasting originated. Was it a tradition handed down by the Apostles? Was it determined as such by the early Church? Was the duration of fasting established from the beginning? These and similar questions require an answer. Fasting before Easter was not determined by the early Church as such either in specific days or for certain foods. In the New Testament the word for fasting, not eating, means abstinence from food entirely, and was originally a Jewish custom reluctantly practiced by the Jews, although it was not an official requirement. Bishop Irenaios of Lyon (192) wrote a letter to the Bishop of Rome that there is a great difference about the duration of fasting before Easter. Some people, he wrote, fast one day, others two, still others more days. Some of them fast 40 hours continuously, day and night, from all foods (Eusebuis, Ecclesiastical History, 524,12). Tertuuian, an ecclesiastical writer of the 3rd century, refers to abstinence from foods as being two days, Friday and Saturday. Some of the early Christians abstained from foods the whole day and ate only in the evenings, while others ate not at all, day or night, as did those who were fasting for 40 hours. Other Christians extended the period of fasting beyond the two days to one week (during the mid-third century),'but everyone was allowed to extend the duration of fasting as long as he wanted. Thus, these Christians added hours and days of fasting at their own will, beyond the customary duration of time (Dionysios, Bishop of Alexandria, P. G. Migne 10, 1278). To be continued in the next Bulletin 2

4 Why is it hard to believe that Mary gave birth in a way contrary to the law of natural birth and remained a virgin, when contrary to the law of nature the sea looked at Him and fled, and the waters of the Jordan returned to their source (Ps. 113:3). Is it past belief that a virgin gave birth when we read that a rock issued water (Ex. 17:6), and the waves of the sea were made solid as a wall (Ex. 14:22)? Is it past belief that a Man came from a virgin when a rock bubbled forth a flowing stream (Ex. 20:11), iron floated on Sunday School Teachers Corner March 5th: * After our "Icon Procession" our Sunday School class learned more about "Sunday of Orthodoxy". We had a handout which explained that this is the first Sunday of Great Lent and that the icons are of great significance to the Orthodox Church. The main theme of this Sunday since the year 843 has been that of the victory of the icons. In that year the iconoclastic controversy, which had raged on and off since 736, was finally laid to rest, and icons and their veneration were restored on the first Sunday of Lent and is commemorated as the "Triumph of Orthodoxy". *We also learned 3 Lenten vocabulary words (more to come) and their meanings: Meatfare, Cheesefare and Triodion. * Our second handout is called "Do You Want to Fast This Lent?" by Pope Francis. It's message is that it isn't always what you "give up" but things you can do to become a better Christian... *Fast from hurting words and say kind words. *Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude. *Fast from anger and be filled with patience. *Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope. *Fast from worries and have trust in God. *Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity. *Fast from pressures and be prayerful. *Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy. *Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others. *Fast from grudges and be reconciled. *Fast from words and be silent so you can listen. Blessings, Miss Karen and Miss Debbie 4
