1 RIVERSIDE, OHIO FEBRUARY 17, CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL We thank everyone from St. Helen Parish who has participated in the 2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Our pledges provide us the opportunity to be witnesses of Christ s love and generosity to thousands through six important Catholic ministries right here in our archdiocese. We will host the second of our two evenings of Renewal and Reflection on the Word for all lectors and those interested in finding out more about the ministry this Thursday, February 21, at 7 p.m., in the Helen Room and church. I recently saw this sentiment on a decorative piece for sale at a local store. Its simple profoundness is beautiful, challenging, and even a little unsettling. We all want to be kind, and for sure we want people to be kind to us. But in this world where we can be anything, kindness is often the first thing to fly out the window. Oftentimes we expect kindness from others but fail to show it ourselves because it is easier to blame and to judge. Take a closer look at this quote from Mr. Rogers, a man whose simple profoundness changed the lives of so many people, a man whose gentleness and openness expanded our view of neighbor, a man who reflected the face of Jesus to the children and adults who watched him and soaked in all of his goodness. Let s try this week to participate in something sacred through our own kindness, and in doing so, build up the kingdom of God. Even though most of us will no longer be itemizing our charitable contributions on our tax returns because of the recent tax changes that almost doubled the standard deduction, we might still be able to reap tax benefits from donations to St. Helen Parish! Smithville Road Dayton, Ohio In the Gospel of Luke, the Word of God demands conversion. IN this gospel, both John the Baptist who precedes Jesus and the apostles who follow Jesus call for a turning around. At times Luke tells us of those who literally turn around, like the prodigal son. His most important turn-around story is that of Saul who became Paul in the Acts of the Apostles which was also written by Luke. Christian life is a call to a life-long and everyday turning around to conversion. Luke invites us to turn around and find forgiveness, healing and redemption. All are welcome to this free event. Registration not required. SHROVE TUESDAY IS MARCH 5, 2019 We have a beautiful sung Evening Prayer service during which some of our young girls from 2nd through 6th grade do a lovely liturgical dance as we sing Halle, halle, hallelu-u-jah! Since Lent begins the next day and we will not sing Alleluia again until Easter, the Alleluia banner is buried in a black box as part of the dance! We have a fire outside to burn our palms from last year to make ashes for Ash Wednesday. We go to the gym for ice cream and nachos and all kinds of treats before Lent begins! Would you be interested in creating a positive environment of education, fun, service, and fellowship for our youth? Can you help us as we prepare our youth to be disciples of Christ and participate fully in our Catholic faith? CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) invites all adults to prayerfully consider serving the Church through our exceptional ministry! 6 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME DAYTON CATHOLIC WOMEN S CLUB Ladies, please join us at the DCWC's annual St. Patrick's Day Luncheon and Card/Game party on Saturday, March 9th, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Presidential Banquet Center, 4548 Presidential Way, Kettering, Ohio. The $25.00 lunch ($15.00 for lunch; $10.00 tax deductible donation). To enter the Euchre Tournament $5.00 in advance should be included with your registration. The day will feature vendors. We will be collecting Easter items for homeless children at St. Vincent's De Paul. Please bring completed Easter Baskets, individually wrapped treats, dental hygiene items, small toys, cellophane wrap, cellophane grass, bows/ribbons, empty baskets, body gel, luffa/washcloths and towels. We are looking for strong pro-life women who have hearts to serve others in our community who are at risk for abortion. Duties will include answering phones, scheduling appointments and other basic administrative tasks. Kettering-We are looking for help on: Mondays 8 am -12 pm or 11 am-3 pm, Tuesdays from 11am-3pm, Thursdays 10 am-2pm, and Fridays 8am-12pm or 11 am- 3pm. WOMEN'S MORNING OF REFLECTION Please join us on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at St. Peter's Church. We ll begin in the church with Mass at 9:30 AM, followed by a social and a meditation/spiritual reflection on St. Mary Magdalene and her Gift of Leadership, ending at noon. Reconciliation will be available. HOLY TRINITY FISH FRY The Holy Trinity Annual Fish Fry will take place on Saturday, March 9 th, in Trinity Center located at 272 Bainbridge Street just east of the Oregon District with plenty of free parking. We will be serving dinner from 6:30pm 8:30pm with games from 7:00pm -11:00pm. Tickets are $15 in advance or $17 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at the parish office and after masses until noon on Friday, March 8 th. Ticket price includes an all you can eat dinner of delicious fried fish, sausage, and tasty side dishes as well as 3 drink tickets. There are opportunities to participate in raffles, bid on silent auction items, and try your luck at one of the games of chance tables. This is a 21 and over event.
