Every year parishioners pitch in to clean our church...wash down the chairs and pillars in the chapels with oil soap, clean glass, and oil the Stations of the Cross and some of our precious statues. There are 548 chairs in the nave, 44 on the east side,34 on the west side, 45 in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, 48 in the loft, not to mention all the pillars and glass! Join us on Monday, April 8, any time from 6:00 to 8:30. We will provide the cleaning liquids and snacks; you bring buckets and rags! ANOINTING SERVICE FOR FR. DAVE Please make plans to join us, as we surround Fr. Dave with prayers and convey the Sacrament of the Sick at an Anointing Service on Tuesday, April 30th, at 6:30 p.m. We will also welcome anyone who is facing a serious illness in mind, body, or spirit to come forward to receive this Sacrament. 3 RIVERSIDE, OHIO APRIL 7, 2019 OUR HOLIEST WEEK BEGINS APRIL 13 AND 14 WITH PALM SUNDAY Just as we do when we go out of town for a family wedding or some other special event, we break our stride, we get ready, we do something completely different. Our regular routine stops and we focus on the special. The Special in our faith begins this next week. The definitive days and events of our faith the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord the who and why of our existence are celebrated. Please join us for our Holy Week liturgies. If you are going to be out of town on Spring Break, seek out services to attend. May we all enter into Jesus s story as fully as we can... because it is our story, too. OUR HOLY WEEK LITURGIES Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord s Supper 7:00 p.m., April 18 ALL-NIGHT ADORATION in the Gym (see next column) Holy Thursday Night Prayer 10:00 p.m. in the Gym Good Friday of the Lord s Passion 1:00 p.m., April 19 Easter Vigil in the Holy Night 8:45 p.m., Saturday, April 20 (NOTE: NO 5 p.m. Mass on the 20th) Easter Sunday 8:00 a.m., and 10:30 a.m. ALL NIGHT ADORATION IN THE GYM FROM HOLY THURSDAY AFTER MASS UNTIL FRIDAY MORNING AT 8:15 During his agony in the garden, Jesus asks his apostles if they could remain awake and pray with him. In honor of this request, our Men s Group will have someone in the chapel of repose in the gym after Mass on Thursday evening until Friday morning. Please be welcome to join them and pray with the Lord... And pray for all of us that our faith may not be shaken! In the event of rain on Thursday evening, which would necessitate canceling the outdoor procession to the gym, the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed in the Holy Family Chapel in the church, so adoration and Night Prayer will take place there. 4 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT WITH GRATITUDE In December I shared with you our need to have a new vessel made for the Sacred Chrism, after ours was accidentally broken. Last week I picked up the vessel that Abiona Pleasant created for us. To recap, James Michael had blown our replacement vessel after Thomas Chapman, the original artisian commissioned by Fr. Paul, had passed away. James has since sold his studio and recommended I reach out to Abiona, who had apprenticed with him. Abiona and I were moved as I shared the story of how the original vessel came to be, and she shared with me that the equipment she would be using had belonged to the original artist, Thomas Chapman. What Abiona envisioned as being a simple task soon proved to be more stressful than she thought. As she continued to create vessels that she did not feel were worthy of the holy oil they would hold, her frustration grew. A volunteer at K12 Gallery & TEJAS who noticed her stress, presented her with a beautiful crystal rosary that had belonged to her mother. She told Abiona to hold the rosary and pray before she began working. Soon she was praying the rosary every time she came into the studio to work with the glass. The glassblowing sessions themselves became a time of prayer and she began to create vessels that were beautiful. The result of her prayers moved beyond the studio for Abiona and flowed into her personal life as well. Situations that were previously causing her stress became calmer and she found a sense of peace. I am grateful to Abiona for her dedication to create a beautiful vessel for our Sacred Chrism. I am even more grateful for the opportunity to have met her and pray that God continues to bless her and the beautiful talent she has been given. Please stop by the Parish or School Office to pick up dolls or call/text FLEA MARKET TURN-IN Turn ins begin Memorial Day weekend in the Smith Building. (Saturday, May 25 from 9 am-noon, and Sunday, May 26 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.) The Flea Market is pure profit for the Parish. Popular items include household items, toys, tools, craft supplies, mystery garage stuff. We cannot accept shoes, clothing, TVs, computer printers, or any furniture larger than a folding chair or side table. Questions? Just ask! 6 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT UPCOMING EVENTS AT TRANSFIGUATION CENTER Rosary Walks Beginning on May 5 th, the Center will once again begin having Rosary Walks. We will pray the rosary while walking the grounds beginning at 4:00, and then share a pot luck meal at the shelter. It is great family tradition and helps the kids learn about their faith. The Center provides the meat and drinks, so please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Future dates are June 23 rd, July 28 th, August 25 th, and September 29 th. This event is free and preregistration is not required. Have you wondered about The Mass? How can I get more out of it? I wish I knew more about what is going on. I wish I could explain to my friends and family more about it. If you have had any of these questions, then consider coming to the Center for a four-part series on The Mass. We will utilize videos and discussions to expand our understanding and appreciation of the mass. Classes begin on May 7 th,14 th, 21 nd and 28 th at 7pm at the Transfiguration Center. LAY MINISTRY FORMATION PROGRAM INFORMATION MEETING, St. Christopher, Vandalia: Saturday April 13 th at 10 AM Emmaus Room Learn how you can grow in faith, knowledge and skills through the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Lay Pastoral Ministry Program. We equip busy adult Catholics with the skills and knowledge needed to become missionary disciples, serving families, parishes and communities more effectively. Non-degreed Certificate classes will meet at St. Christopher on Saturday morning and/or afternoon and will include scripture, theology and pastoral studies. The Information meeting at St. Christopher will last about 45 minutes and include a discussion of courses, formation components, fitting the program into your schedule, tuition, fees and the application process. If you are a graduating high school senior or an existing college student attending college this Fall, or you have kids that are members that fit these criteria, the FFCOCU is offering four $1,000 scholarships. Recipients must be a member of the credit union (new or existing) and have a 2.5 G.P.A or higher. To be a member, you just have to open a savings account with a minimum $5 deposit.
