1 ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO FEBRUARY 8, 2015 READINGS FOR FEBRUARY 15 Leviticus 13:1-2, Corinthians 10:31-11:1 Mark 1:40-45 ORDINARY TIME IN WINTER IS A SHORT BRIDGE FROM CHRITMAS TO LENT It is hard to believe we are already in February AND that this is the fifth of six Sundays in Ordinary Time in Winter. Depending on when Easter falls, Winter Ordinary Time can be as short as three weeks! During these weeks we hear stories of Jesus calling the disciples, casting out demons, and healing the sick... Walking among his people and changing their lives. And yet we are on the cusp of Lent. We invite you, especially if you are new to the parish within the last couple of years, to check out pages 5 and 6 of today s bulletin, which explain our Shrove Tuesday Celebration and ways in which you can help if you are interested and able. Shrove Tuesday is a powerful demarcation of the difference between Ordinary Time and Lent! OUR SECOND GRADERS AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR FIRST COMMUNION Today at the 10:30 Mass, our second graders will bring loaves of bread that they made themselves as part of their catechesis on the Eucharist. Each child will give his or her loaf to someone in the congregation whom he or she does not know and ask that person to pray for him or her. What a nice and beautiful way to be family in the Body of Christ. Last year, one recipient was so moved at being given a loaf that he wrote a thank you note of encouragement to the child and sent it to him through his Religious Education teacher! With heartfelt thanks for your STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE FEBRUARY 1 Adults $30, Children $8.75 BAPTISMS Congratulations to Kylee May, daughter of Nicholas and Kara Blommel, who recently received new life through the waters of baptism. Welcome sweet little one, to the body of the Body of Christ! WE REMEMBER OUR DECEASED In your prayers please remember David Addison who died and whose Memorial Mass will be Saturday, February 14th at 10:00 a.m.. Please also remember David s family, friends, and all who mourn his death. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE On Ash Wednesday we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and train seminarians in a region that still struggles from the effect of Soviet rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building renovations, your donations help to restore the Church and build the future in the region. Please give generously to the collection next week. Visit (search Church in Central and Eastern Europe ) to learn more. A Monthly Gift, A One-Time Gift, or your Prayerful Support Whatever you can offer will be a blessing to the beneficiaries of the six ministries in the Archdiocese that serve the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those in the community and our Church!

Just like Advent, we will offer three different resources, depending on your preferences. The Word Among Us includes daily meditations based on the Mass readings, inspirational essays and stories of the saints and other heroes of faith. The Little Black Book has daily reflections and scripture readings, and Reconciled to God features a short passage from scripture, a reflection, and a one-line prayer for each day of Lent. All three are wonderful materials--please choose one so that each person may enhance their Lenten experience. FAIR TRADE COFFEE, TEA, CHOCOLATE, AND OLIVE OIL Fair Trade coffee, tea, chocolate, and olive oil sale next Sunday! Catholic Relief Service provides direct assistance to farmers overseas and supports them by promoting Fair Trade here in the U.S. CRS and its partners around the world help coffee cooperatives transform their communities by growing great coffee, farming in ecologically responsible ways, and building lasting relationships with Fair Trade companies in the U.S. The tea and chocolate is also purchased from democratically run cooperatives. In addition, each purchase generates a contribution to Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Fund, which makes development grants. Check out the choices available in the Smith Building next Sunday, during Donut Sunday!

ST. HELEN GREEN TEAM Global Catholic Climate Movement "Please, I would like to ask all those who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of goodwill: let us be "protectors"of creation, protectors of God's plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment." - Pope Francis In these remarks from his inaugural mass, Pope Francis made it clear from the start that all people of goodwill have a responsibility as "protectors of creation." Therefore the Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM) is organizing a Lenten activity as a response to our present climate crisis. Visit catholicclimatemovement.global to see how you can participate. Do you have a working refrigerator that you would like to disappear? One of the two refrigerators in the St. Julie Center has gone to its eternal rest, and we would like to replace it. 5 OUR SHROVE TUESDAY CELEBRATION IS NEAR! IF YOU ARE NEW(ER) TO THE PARISH, GET THE SCOOP HERE! For over 15 years, St. Helen s has had a wonderful tradition of celebrating Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. We begin with beautiful sung Evening Prayer at 7:00 p.m. During this liturgy, we bury the Alleluia banner in a black box, where it will remain until it is taken out again at the Easter Vigil to remind us that we do not say or sing Alleluia during Lent. Immediately after evening prayer, we head out to the brazier in the front of church and burn the palms that we have had in our homes since Palm Sunday. The ashes from the palms are then used for the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday! And immediately after that, we head to the gym for our Feast Before the Fast! Ice cream, desserts, nachos, soda, fellowship, and fun! Be part of the this awesome event! Bring your palms with you to Evening Prayer or put them in the basket in the vestibule ahead of time! Tuesday, February 17, at 7:00 p.m. in the Church See the next page for additional information.
