THINGS TO THINK ABOUT AND DISCUSS THIS WEEK In the 1977 movie, "Oh, God!," when Jerry, a grocer whom God has enlisted to spread God's word and love, is put on trial for being a false prophet, God asks the jury, "Why is it so hard for you to believe? Is my physical existence any more improbable than your own? What about all that hoo-ha with the devil awhile ago from that movie [The Exorcist]? Nobody had any problem believing that the devil took over and existed in a little girl. All she had to do was wet the rug, throw up some pea soup and everybody believed. The devil you could believe, but not God?" What is your reaction to this line from the movie? Why is it hard for many of us to talk as openly about God in our lives as we can about everything else? Let's pray for the ability to trust and hope and speak with authority about God and God's love and mercy. Some people have asked why we have the Mass Companion Cards. Others have commented that they have difficulty finding the songs in the hymnal because they forget the song number after the cantor announces it. That is one of the reasons we have the Mass Cards! The song titles and numbers are listed on them because at the present time, we do not have enough numbers or space to accommodate listing all of the hymns, psalms, and responses on the song boards we have. In our new hymnals, song numbers go up into the 1000s. We are looking into a new arrangement to project this information so that it will be readable even in the back of church. From another standpoint, the Mass Cards offer quick food for thought...things to listen for during the Mass...and things to watch for after Mass as we process what we have heard in Scripture and the homily. On the Feast of the Holy Family, as suggested on the card, I took delight in thinking about all the little people in my life who are growing "in wisdom and age and grace" and then saying a prayer for them. On the Solemnity of the Epiphany, one of the "watch for" ideas was to try to look at something in our lives from a new perspective. At the 10:30 Mass, Fr. Fitz explained what it meant for the Israelites to be the "chosen people" in a way I never heard before, and it made perfect sense. At the same Mass, someone said something old and "tired", and I groaned inwardly. But then, because of the "watch for" idea, I suddenly realized how much that person means to me and how good and giving the person is, and my thoughts on the "tired" phrase shifted to gratitude! Catch the Building Spirit (CtBS) is a coalition of Catholic and Presbyterian churches working together to provide housing in the local area for qualified families. CtBS has been building houses in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton for the past 25 years! We are in search of volunteers to assist with this worthy cause. This is your chance to affect some REAL social justice, right in our own community. We need people with organizational skills, an affinity for teamwork, and some initiative, to step forward and help us continue in the near future, doing what we do best... helping others secure safe, affordable housing in the Dayton area. The CtBS Board meets once a month on the first Wednesday of the month right here at St. Helen Parish in the St. Julie Center.
