1 ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO April 2, 2017 CHURCH FEST IS HERE! AND WE NEED YOUR HELP! Every year parishioners pitch in to clean our church...wash down the chairs and pillars in the chapels with oil soap, clean glass, and oil the Stations of the Cross and some of our precious statues. There are 548 chairs in the nave, 44 on the east side, 34 on the west side, 45 in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and 48 in loft, not to mention all the pillars and glass! Join us on Monday, April 3, any time from 6:00 to 8:30. We will provide the cleaning liquids; you bring buckets and rags! HOLY WEEK BEGINS NEXT SUNDAY NO ORDINARY TIME Holy Week marks time in a different way. It is no ordinary time. We follow Jesus in his final days, through his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, through his last supper with his friends, through his agony in the garden, his betrayal, the scourging, the crowning with thorns, his struggle to carry his cross, his crucifixion, death, burial... and resurrection! During Holy Week, we walk through and relive our salvation history. We learn how to live the Paschal Mystery with Jesus as we go through our own sufferings, carry our own crosses, and rise again in hope and the love of God. Please don t let this time be ordinary. While we all might spend our week in different ways, we can all still be mindful of what our Lord did for us; we can still pray with him; we can still be especially grateful to him in the ways that we remember and mark our days. RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Communal reconciliation services will be offered at St. Helen on Tuesday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m. This service will be in the form of Taize prayer along with the Sacrament. CALLING ALL ANNIVERSARY COUPLES Will you be celebrating your 25, 50, 60, 65, or even your 70 or 75th year of marriage in 2017? If so, please let us know about it! We will recognize you during Mass, followed by a wonderful brunch for the anniversary couples, on April 30th. Please call the parish office if you are able to attend, This week, CRS Rice Bowl invites us to enter into solidarity with Dita in Ethiopia, and see how her newfound entrepreneurial skills are providing three meals a day for her children even during a devastating drought. What skills have you discovered this Lent that can be put to good use in building God s kingdom? Let us pray this week for the people of Ethiopia and for those who suffer from drought.

3 ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO April 2, 2017 Do you have a little free time on Thursday Morning, April 6? We are throwing our 2nd Annual Palmfest at 9:00 a.m., after the 8:15 Mass! Assuming that the day will be bright with sunshine (and even it is it not), we invite you to wear shorts and sunglasses (if it will help you pretend) and join us in further pretending for a few moments that our Palm Sunday palms are really palms trees. Imagine that you are relaxing on the sand... listening to the ocean or some steel drum music... drinking coffee or tea or orange juice or crisp, cold water... enjoying a bagel and fresh fruit... AND, (here is the real selling point): separating and cutting our box of 1100 palms in preparation for our Lord s Palm Sunday processions! Fellowship, food, and light work make fun ministry! Little ones content to play with their own toys and babies in pumpkin seats welcome! Call Mary in the Church Office to reserve your place at the table! ! SHOES FOR THE SHOELESS: Our Holy Thursday Special Collection Mission: to provide properly fitting shoes to children in desperate need. Vision: To have no child endure the unnecessary physical and emotional distress that accompanies having no shoes or tattered shoes that do not fit. Simply, we hope to give hope. We provide kids with brand new shoes that fit, along with a clean pair of socks. For some kids, it's the first time they've ever owned a brand new pair of shoes. On Holy Thursday, we will take donations of new socks of all kinds for children and cash donations for the purchase of new shoes! Mel McWilliams of our parish staff has volunteered with this organization. If you have any questions about it, feel free to give Mel a call. Let time stop for you during Holy Week...Enter into and allow the joy and sorrow of Palm Sunday, the power and simplicity of Holy Thursday, and the pain of Good Friday to lead you to Resurrection on Easter!

4 HOLY WEEK: A WEEK OF PROCESSIONS Funeral Procession by artist Ellis Wilson In our Catholic tradition, processions allow us to walk together with God on the pilgrimage of life. The Dictionary of the Liturgy by Rev. Jovian P. Lang, OFM (Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, 1989) states that Processions translate marvelously the ordered, calm, trusting, and joyous life, the need of collective prayer, and the joy in the triumph of our Savior. Liturgy employs all the arts for the glory of God and so could not leave out the art of movement, dignified and measured choreography, which appeals to all parts of the human body. On Palm Sunday, weather permitting, we will gather outside the church, and, in memory of Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we will all process up the center aisle with our palms, reverence the altar with a bow, cross the front of the church, and move down the side aisles to our seats. On Holy Thursday, weather permitting, we will process with the Eucharist outside, through the garden, and into the gym, where the Eucharist will be reposed in a separate tabernacle, and a sacred space will be created for all-night adoration. All of these movements and gestures are part of our dignified and measured choreography in praise of our Lord! Please join us in this procession if you are physically able. How powerful it is when we share experiences in the Body of Christ!
