1 ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO FEBRUARY 22, 2015 OUR LENTEN ENVIRONMENT The visual goal of the Lenten environment is austerity, simplicity and plainness. The prescribed color for Lent is purple or violet. A purple cloth drapes the crucifix... A vase of dried branches, a bowl of river rocks, and a vase of sand mark the front of the ambo where the Word of God is proclaimed... Our Stations of the Cross are framed and purple cloth symbolizes Jesus experience along the way. This year, we will once again be distributing white crosses for your pocket prayer reminders. They are available at all of the doors. Our Lenten Journey begins... COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE Thank you for your generous contributions to the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Your gift is an expression of solidarity with the suffering people of this region. Through joining in the work of this collection, you are helping to restore the Church and build the future. As we enter this first week of Lent, CRS Rice Bowl invites us to enter into solidarity with the people of Tanzania, where a simple soybean is changing lives! We are encouraged to reflect on the Catholic social teaching principle, Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person, and reminded that our inherent dignity comes from our creation as children of God and not from any of our own actions. Let us pray this week for our brothers and sisters in Tanzania and all around the world, that we may respect and uphold the sacredness of life and dignity of all people. If you did not get a rice bowl last weekend, please pick one up at the church entrance and share your bounty with those who are less fortunate. READINGS FOR MARCH 1 Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, Romans 8:31b-34 Mark 9:2-10 With heartfelt thanks for your STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE FEBRUARY 15 Adults $18, Children $8.75 BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY Our funeral choir would like to add more volunteers to sing at our parish funerals. A perfect voice is not needed; often times, knowing there are parishioners there to support the grieving families is enough. This is an opportunity to become more personally involved with the grieving people in our community. The time commitment is minimal; we meet 30 minutes before the funeral to go over the music. Most of our funerals are in the morning, usually starting at 10:00 or 10:30. If you would like to join this ministry, please contact Paula Price at or at paula.price@sthelenparish.org. LENTEN RESOURCES As we begin Lent, our Lenten reading materials will be at the church doors. Just like Advent, we will offer three different resources, depending on your preferences. The Word Among Us includes daily meditations based on the Mass readings, inspirational essays and stories of the saints and other heroes of faith. The Little Black Book has daily reflections and scripture readings, and Reconciled to God features a short passage from scripture, a reflection, and a one-line prayer for each day of Lent. All three are wonderful materials--please choose one so that each person may enhance their Lenten experience. SOUP AND BREAD SUPPERS Lent is right around the corner and the days are cold, which means it's the perfect time of year for Soup! Mark your calendars for the 2015 Soup Suppers. The men will convene on Tuesday, March 3 and the women on Monday, March 9 from 6:30-8:00 in the Smith Building. This year's theme for the suppers is reconciliation, and the evenings include conversation, a speaker, and plenty of homemade soups and fresh bread. The men will hear the powerful witness of Rob Gohmann and Rev. George Brewer, while the women will experience Ms. Sheila Luther as they share their respective transformations through their involvement in prison ministry. Smithville Rd. This Eucharist caters to those among us who are in need of emotional, physical and mental healing. The session consists of celebration of the Eucharist and an extended laying of hands upon each individual by the priests present and the healing team at the parish. If nothing else, you will leave with a deep assurance of God s presence. KAIROS COOKIES Bakers of the parish, it's that time again! More than 20,000 dozen cookies are needed to make the next Kairos Prison Ministry retreat a success. Please take a bag with instructions from the vestibule and make this part of your Lenten sacrifice. Cookies must be returned to the rectory by March 10 or can be brought to either Soup Supper. Don't forget that the Soup Suppers feature speakers who are involved with this ministry, and this is a wonderful way to support their work. THANK YOU! Feed the Spirit would like to say a HUGE Thank You to St. Helen staff and students for there wonderful generosity. During our recent food drive we collected 1550 food items that will help feed children whose families are having financial difficulties. We are very grateful and humbled by the charitable giving of our families.

HELEN GREEN TEAM Notice! Important Change in Recycling Due to a change in policy, our vendors will no longer accept batteries from organizations for recycling. Therefore, the Green Team can no longer collect batteries. However, recycling batteries is still very important and individual households can still participate. We strongly encourage you to take your used batteries to either Montgomery or Greene County Environmental Services, or a retailer that accepts batteries for recycling. Since our battery collection started, St. Helen Parish has kept hundreds of pounds of toxic chemicals from the landfill. HELEN SCHOOL REGISTRATION Join us February 24, 6pm-8pm for the second registration night for our current families to come in and register for the upcoming school year! We need to get an idea of how many spots we have open and can offer to new families who are interested. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the paperwork. As an added BONUS all families who register before 8pm on February 24 th will receive a $20 discount on the per family registration fee. This means the registration fee will be $40 instead of $60. 5 LOCAL CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED Are you familiar with an organization that is empowering low-income families to tackle the root causes of poverty? If so, the organization may be eligible to apply for a local Catholic Campaign for Human Development grant, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. Access the application forms and view lists of organizations currently receiving local CCHD funds, please go to socialaction and click on the CCHD links on the side menu. Or contact us at x2660. MARTHA DINNER The Sisters of the Precious Blood will host a Martha Dinner for high school girls and young women on March 12 at Salem Heights, 4500 Denlinger Road (GPS address). Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the event runs from 6-8 p.m. This is an opportunity to meet members of both monastic and apostolic religious communities, pray together and share a meal, and visit with other young women exploring a call to religious life. OPEN HOUSE In celebration of the Year of Consecrated Life, the Sisters of the Precious Blood will host an open house at Salem Heights, 4960 Salem Ave., Dayton, on March 8 from 2-4:30 p.m. Guided tours by sisters will include the chapel, community areas, historical displays and apartments. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO TUTOR/MENTOR YOUNG REFUGEES Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley s Refugee Resettlement Program is looking for individuals interested in tutoring or mentoring refugees age There has been a dramatic increase in young refugees being resettled in the Dayton area. Life in the U.S. is often more different than what many refugees expected. Mentors can assist mentees to better cope with situations that may occur during the acculturation process. Tutors can help mentees improve their English or assist with homework.
