2 From the Vicar In mid-february we got to celebrate Ronja s birthday. There is something really special about celebrating a birthday that probably will be the first they remember. She was excited about it weeks in advance, the anticipation palpable. Parents will never forget the awe in their child s face looking at everything before the great unwrapping begins. It is this same sense of awe that I see in the disciples today. They have been with Jesus since he called them. To some extent their journey together has also been like a long unwrapping as the disciples slowly but surely realise who Jesus is. Until the day of the transfiguration when everything becomes clear at least for a moment. At the transfiguration the disciples see clearly who Jesus is. Jesus does not only succeed Moses and Elijah, in a long line of prophets but is the one to which they point. He is in conversation with them but Jesus is the one who will fulfil the work they began. In Jesus what is kept under wraps becomes fully revealed. Moses veils his face. The holy of holies where the Ark of the Covenant is kept is hidden by a curtain. In Jesus, Paul writes, the veil had been taken away. On Good Friday the curtain in the temple is torn and we are invited into God s presence. I m not surprised Peter, James and John are overawed by their experience. All along they have seen glimpses of Jesus true nature but it is only now after they recognise that Jesus is the Messiah that they are able to see God unobstructed. What I saw in Ronja standing in front of the table with all her birthday gifts is what I hope for myself when I am faced with this amazing gift. I hope I can see God s gift to us with the same awe, wonder and excitement the disciples had when they realised who they were following. This is what it means to be childlike before God, when the veil had been lifted and the curtain in the temple has been torn. God bless, Fr James 2

3 Today s Worship Collect Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Readings : First Reading: Exodus Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterwards all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. 3

4 Gospel: Luke Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him! When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. Post Communion Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ: may we who are partakers at his table reflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may know his power to change and save. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Lent Appeal During Lent our Benefice will again be supporting WaterAid Lent Appeal Jars of Change. Lent is often a time for giving up small luxuries in life, but imagine if you had to give up more important things education, employment or hope for the future, all because you do not have clean water close to home. This is the reality for 1 in 9 people around the world. Hours spent collecting water, or days wasted from ill health, means children miss out on school and parents cannot work. For children especially, clean water can be the difference between a full education and struggling to keep up in class. The difference between enjoying a happy childhood with friends, or risking your life on long walks for water. Our loose change can help to make a significant difference and any amount raised, however seemingly small, would be gratefully received. For further details and to pick up a sleeve for your jar please speak with Gill Calderhead, Jill Austin or Len Batten. We are also supporting the Diocesan Lent appeal, which is raising money for Sussex based charity Turning Tides, which works daily to end homelessness across the county The charity has seen a rise in the number of appeals for help as they assist more than 65 people a day in their community hubs in Worthing and Littlehampton. We ll be having retiring collections for Turning Tides in all three churches during Lent and any profit from Lent lunches will be donated to this worthy cause. Thank you for your support and generosity. Lent Notices Lent begins on Ash Wednesday 6th March with services with Imposition of Ashes at at 9.30am and at 7.30pm. Lent and Holy Week Leaflets: Lent leaflets will be available in all our churches from this Sunday. These list all our activities in Lent including Lent Courses, Lent Lunches, and Meditations on the Cross. Please take one home with you! Stations of the Cross Every Friday in Lent there will be a short Meditation on the Cross at. These will take different formats using a range of media led and self-led. All welcome. Lent Lunches Our Lent Lunches begin this week at. From 12noon there will be a light lunch served in the Hall. Hope you will be able to join us. Lunches are free and we hope you will be able to donate what you would have spent on lunch that day. Donations will go towards Chestnut Tree House. Lunches will take place every Friday in Lent at and Thursdays from the 21 st March at St Julian s. 5

6 Lent Courses will begin next week (w/c 11 th March) Mondays 7.15pm at and Thursdays 11am at St Julian s. We will be using the diocesan lent course Living Christ. To help us order the correct number of resources there will be sign-up sheets in church from this Sunday. Lent Reflections: Sign-up sheets will be in churches from this week. Please consider if you would like to take part this year. Reflections will be based on a Bible verse and should conclude with a short prayer. Maximum 300 words. Shoreham Churches Together Lent Lecture: 26 March 7 for 7.30pm This year we will be hearing from Dr Terry Biddington who is Dean of Spiritual Life at the University of Winchester. He will be speaking on Building God s House in Shoreham: Risk, Relationship and Reward We will be meeting this year in St Mary s Parish Centre, 1 New Road. Other Notices Electoral Roll 2019: Please make sure you pick up an electoral roll form! Every six years the electoral roll of each parish is completely renewed which means that if you have been on the electoral roll you will need to reapply for inclusion in this year s roll. Forms will be in church from this Sunday! Please see notices for the closing date in each of our churches! You can only hold office and vote at parish meetings if you are on the electoral roll. ' Planned Giving: As many of you know you can give your weekly/monthly giving by various means including giving in the collection at a service, giving via monthly standing orders or by means of weekly blue envelopes. The envelopes run from the first week in April and each envelope is dated for that week and is personalised purely for you. The only person who knows which envelope belongs to which person is the Stewardship Secretary and this information is not divulged to anyone. St Julian s church is open for visitors to enjoy this unique historic building and for quiet prayer and contemplation, every Saturday and Sunday, from 10am until 4pm.
