2 From the Vicar It is always difficult to write about the emotions which are stirred through listening to music. Music has the fantastic quality to express emotions and feelings that would need books to describe. Chords are the building blocks, and a few of them put together open up whole new worlds of experience. Trying to describe a piece of music becomes a tricky task. Nevertheless, over 300 years ago Johann Sebastian Bach, who worked most of his life as a director of music, organist and composer in Thuringia and Saxony in Central Germany composed an oratorio on Christ s Passion which regularly reduces me to tears. I m not exactly a teary person but something in the music makes me relive and reconnect to the immense suffering of Christ. The narrator leads us through the account of Christ s passion according to Matthew in words taken more or less directly from chapters 26 and 27 in Matthew s gospel. When I hear them read in church I often start humming Bach s recitatives. The arias are little sermons set to music, reflecting on what has happened in the narrative the chorales a response of the faithful to the interpretation or narrative. I find myself listening to the story and am immediately immersed in the plot, sharing in Jesus emotions and hoping that it won t come to the painful end that Christ must suffer. What is it about Bach s St Matthew Passion that I regularly break out in tears while listening to it? I guess it is the fresh and unbridled expression of pain I experience throughout the oratorio. There is something in the music that resonates with the foundation of my religious experience. Most of all it s the faithful devotion articulated in the choir s chorales - these chorales which are heart-wrenching in their response to the narrative. When Jesus tells the disciples he must die the choir asks, O dearest Jesus, how hast thou offended, That such a cruel sentence hath been spoken? What is thy guilt, what were the evil doings Thou hast committed? Or when Jesus tells the disciples that one among them will betray him and the disciples ask Lord is it I? the choir sings, 'Tis I, I must be sorry, 2

3 With hands and feet together Bound fast, must lie in hell. The scourges and the fetters And all that thou hast suffered, All this deserveth now my soul. And when Jesus renders his will to Gods will in Gethsemane My Father, if it cannot be that this cup pass from me, unless I have drunk it, then let thy will be done. the choir answers, What my God will, be done alway, His will, it is the best will; To help all those he is prepared Whose faith in him is steadfast. He frees from want, this righteous God, And punisheth with measure: Who trusts in God, on him relies, Him will he not abandon. And again when the crown of thorns is placed on his head the choir sets in with the well known passion chorale O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, O sacred head, sore wounded, defiled and put to scorn; O kingly head surrounded with mocking crown of thorn: What sorrow mars thy grandeur? Can death thy bloom deflower? O countenance whose splendor the hosts of heaven adore! I can associate with the emotions expressed by the choir. I am integrated into the story through them, singing these simple tunes tunes you and I can pick up so easily. I think that is the beauty of this oratorio. It lets us take part in the suffering, it lets us reply with words and tunes that are meaningful, which express some of our total frustration with having someone suffer for our sake and our salvation, without there being any chance of doing anything to stop or even avoid this sacrifice of Jesus for our sake. 3

But we have the need to respond to it, we need to find a way of conveying our grief and guilt over our inability to accept God and our humanity. Bach gives us a wonderful form for doing so.

The fact is that at some point words fail and the words can be so fitting but without the music they would not have the power to touch our hearts the way music does. He gives us music enhancing the words and bringing a whole new understanding to our response to Jesus suffering. Bach composed wonderful arias (you can hear one of the most beautiful arias Bleed Away, O, My Heart in the first video) and recitatives and eight voice choir pieces for this oratorio (the last piece We Lay Ourselves With Weeping Prostrate you can hear at the bottom), masterfully weaving the parts into a rich texture of music; do listen to them they are wonderful, too. But nothing exceeds the power of these simple chorales. Everyone has the ability to join in. Through them we are able to come to terms with our own expression of the cross the sorrow we feel when we grasp the necessity of God s sacrifice but also experience gratefulness for God s love towards us. For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son. John 3:16. 4

If anyone says anything to you, just say this, The Lord needs them. And he will send them immediately. This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, Tell the daughter of Zion, look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, Who is this? The crowds were saying, This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee. She turned and said to him in Hebrew, Rabbouni! (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. Special Easter Services for Children and Families: Hot Cross Bun Service: Good Friday 14 April, 10am at : A service for children on Good Friday with hot cross buns after the service. Easter Family Services: Sunday 16 April 9.45am at and 10am at St Giles. Family Services on Easter Day with Easter egg hunt after both services. On Saturday 22 April the Shoreham Oratorio Choir will be performing a little known, but beautiful Requiem by Cherubini. The work was so highly thought of in its time that it was chosen for Beethoven's funeral. A selection of popular anthems will complement this piece. Wine will be on sale before the concert, which is at 7.30pm in St Mary de Haura church. This is an un-ticketed event with a retiring collection so early arrival is advised Confirmation. There will be a confirmation service at St Mary s on 4 June. In our Benefice we confirm adults and children from age 10 (Year 6). If you are not baptized you will usually be baptized and confirmed in the same service. There will be a 4-5 week preparation course starting in late April. Please let Fr James know by 9 April if you or your child(ren) would like to be confirmed. Recycling for Good Causes in aid of Traidcraft. Thank you to everyone who has been placing articles for recycling in the boxes in and St Giles 9

10 Churches. If you have any more items could you please places them in the boxes or give them to me by Sunday 30th April and I will send them off. Just to remind you the things that can be recycled include gold & silver damaged jewellery and also costume jewellery and watches, coins and currency of any age/unchangeable currency, mobile phones, cameras and gadgets in including laptops and stamps old/new.
