ALPHONSUS PARISH WELCOMES BISHOP BRANSFIELD As a parish, we extend a very warm welcome to Bishop Bransfield, who joins us to be the main celebrant for our Saturday evening Mass, March 24, The Bishop is here to bless and dedicate our new narthex building. As Pastor, I join with the rest of St. Alphonsus Parish in extending a note of gratitude and thanks to Bishop Bransfield who funded our new narthex building and helped make St. Al s ready to face the 21st century and continue its service to the Catholic communities of Centre and South Wheeling, while making the St. Alphonsus Campus area a vital aspect to the Centre Wheeling area. JOSEPH RETREAT CENTER, POGUE RUN ROAD Beginning March 26 from 7:00 8:30 p.m. is an eight month series based on the writings of Thomas Merton. The series will provide a bridge of spiritual formation in the midst of everyday life. Series is $10 which includes the book. REMINDER HANDICAP PARKING The first two parking spaces in the back row nearest the new narthex entrance has been designated as Handicap Parking. Please leave these two spaces open for this purpose. 4 Dear Friends: FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Paul writes in the Letter to the Hebrew: Son (Jesus Christ), though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered, and when he was perfect, he became the source of salvation for all who obey him. Hebrews 5:9 LEARNING THROUGH SUFFERING Suffering in itself has no value. It is what we do with our suffering that makes the difference. The ministry of Jesus arrests to this fact. He did all he could to alleviate the hurts of others. Yet, he also spoke of suffering as a source of growth, as a means of purification and inner conversion. Suffering can be beneficial when it leads to some kind of resurrection in us, when a strength or a sleeping energy in us is aroused, when talents that were unknown are recognized, when a clarity about life s purpose and direction becomes keener for us, and when a stronger sense of compassion for others deepens us. There is so much within us that needs to come to life. Moments of suffering, times of good-bye, can cause us to peer inside our own tombs of unfinishedness or incompleteness and we discover vast storehouses of resiliency which often lead to vitality, fidelity, love and endurance. Resiliency is rooted in the heart. It is an essential catalyst for moving through painful and devastating experiences. Resiliency is about being down and out and springing back, being persistent in the face of defeat. It is hope to hold on to in spite of overwhelming loss. OUR DIVINE COMPANION (a prayerful reflection) Oh God, it is sometimes to difficult to believe that you love me as much as you do. Blessed One, I am humbled to know that you accept me with my weaknesses and my incompleteness. It is this tremendous love of yours which invites a welcoming response from me. Help me to say with my whole heart, I receive your great love with gratitude. God of light, open me to see the many ways that you are present in my life. Light my way. Guide me. Gift me with an inner eye of faith so that all of life takes in the quality of your loving presence. May the power of your spirit fill me with a desire to follow you Divine companion. Help me to renew my commitment to you day by day. As I continue on the journey of life, fill me with gratitude for the power of your love stirring within me. Unite me with all who need your loving touch through my care and concern. As we enter in these final weeks of this year s Lenten journey, let us never forget the sacrifice that Jesus made for each of us. How he would have gone through it all if it were just me who needed to be saved. Peace, Fr. Frank
