Vigil Mass Wednesday, August 14, 7:00 pm Mass Thursday, August 15, 7:00 am The feast of the Assumption offers hope. What has been done for Mary will be done for us. Our God, the Creator of all that is, has intended from the beginning that creation would share in the fullness of light and life. God s purpose is to bring all creation into the life of the Trinity. The Assumption of Mary also lifts us up in hope. What has been done for her will be done for all of us who have been redeemed by Christ, if we commit ourselves to dying and rising with him. She is the mother of and model for all disciples. Mary surrendered to God s will and this yielding led to her being taken into the presence of God, where she prays for us in union with her Son. 3 COMMUNITY EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this Thursday s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, today is the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the Falling Asleep of the God bearer. There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as my friend, and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples. 4 Dear Friends: FROM THE PASTOR S DESK As a follow up to last weeks letter, I have received some more questions concerning the how and why of our celebration of the Mass. Most of these questions focus on the part of the Mass that can be called the Liturgy of the Eucharist. It is here that our Catholic faith and our deep sense of ritual come into sharp focus as we celebrate the sacramental gift of the Eucharist given to us by the Lord and shared with us through the reception of Holy Communion. The Liturgy of the Eucharist has two high points: The Eucharist Prayer and the sharing of Holy Communion. The other elements prepare for and flow from these key moments. In the Eucharistic Prayer the community prayers that the Holy Spirit will change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. During Holy Communion the faithful share in the sacrament, establishing their union with Christ and with one another. The set of ceremonies that precedes the Eucharistic Prayer is called the Preparation of Gifts and it is here that most of the questions are focused. The ceremonies cover the preparation of the altar, the gifts being brought forth and the our praising God for them. The altar which is the Lord s table of sacrifice is at the center of our celebration of the Mass especially the Liturgy of the Eucharist. It is made ready when the Roman Missal, the white corporal and the liturgical vessels are placed upon it. Then the gifts are brought forth from by the people and from among the people. These include the bread and wine to be used and the collection. These gifts express the people s desire to participate in the offering of the gifts to the Lord. Finally, the gifts of bread and wine are accepted by the priest and he says a blessing prayer over each. Pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. After the gifts themselves are prayed over and offered to the Lord; with this prayer the priest invites the people to pray for the acceptance of the sacrifice. The phrase my sacrifice and yours seems to refer to two separate sacrifices but actually the words that are used here acknowledge that the baptized people gathered at this celebration of the Mass exercise their priestly ministry by offering this sacrifice in union WITH the priest. Thus, each person is participating in the one sacrifice. The other area that still is a bit confusing for some people occurs early at the celebration of the Mass during the reciting of the Creed. (Last week s letter also dealt with the Creed when the meaning of the word consubstantial was explained.) We have to understand that during the celebration of the Mass the Creed unites the voices of the faithful who are assembled into the common faith that they all approve. After the death of Jesus, it took the Church several centuries to formulate the message it now professes. The earliest form of a Creed stated: The Father is the ruler of the entire world, and in Jesus Christ, our Savior and in the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, and in the Holy Church is the forgiveness of sins. As the idea of formulating a Creed was developed in the Church there arose the idea of including a Creed with the general structure of the celebration of the Mass. Finally, in 1570 with the introduction of the First Roman Missal the Nicene Creed was included in the celebration of the Mass. This particular Creed was chosen because it was one of the earliest (dating to the 3rd century) and one of the most complete mentioning as it does all the primary aspects of our Catholic beliefs. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. The priest, other ministers, and the faith are ask to make a slight bow (a reverent bow from the waist) when these words are spoken by all. This action is a re-interpretation of a long held custom within the Church that the priest and faithful acknowledge the words of Incarnation. This is the moment that our own salvation was begun. In the past, this acknowledgement took the form of a genuflection. The new Third Roman Missal retains the acknowledgement of a profound bow (a bow from the waist) as stated in the 1970 Missal. Unfortunately, the faithful who assembled for Mass often recite the Creed without intense thought and forget this bow in the process. Yet, week by week, generation after generation the words of the Creed unite the faithful of the Church around the world and across the ages. WE are all called to be ACTIVE participants when we come together to celebrate any Mass. Our celebration is designed to an active response to our faith and to the Lord who is present among us. Thus, we are asked to: 1. Pay attention to the words that are being proclaimed from Sacred Scripture, the words and actions that are parts of the Eucharistic Consecratory Prayer and words of the homily. 2. Verbally response when appropriate so that our voices can be as one prayer before our Lord. 3. Offer the proper respect and adoration that is due our Lord. Peace, Fr. Frank
