2 January 24, 2016 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul s best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gi s granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Chris an voca ons work together. Unlike some of Paul s other wri ngs, which are a product of the social and religious conven ons of his me, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gi s, what voca ons the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Ezra read from the book of the law of God to the assembled people. They understood and accepted the law (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Second Reading As the body with its many parts is s ll one body, so it is with Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-30 [12-14, 27]). Gospel While a ending worship in the Nazarean synagogue, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah and declares himself to be the fulfillment of the prophecy (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21). One of the major players in shaping our prac ces was the warfare involved in building an empire. Soldiers vanished and some mes never returned. Women began to manage their lives and to make decisions. The old family values were replaced by patrio c ones, and religion was more a uned to the gore and glory of ba le, a religion of the state, not of the family. Weddings were s ll family celebra ons, but had a public face. The bride wore a white toga and a red veil and walked to her new home. There, she and her husband joined their right hands and gave consent to each other, not relying on her father to give consent for her. Religion was op onal: a pagan priest might be invited or not, and even without the ceremony, society agreed by common law that a year of living together equaled marriage consent. By the same token, marriage by consent also meant divorce was on the same legal foo ng, and did not require the courts or civil declara ons. This is the world-view the first Chris ans inherited, and it was up to them to determine what was good and to hold marriage up to the light of the gospel. 4 By Fr. George W. Rutler It is that part of the year again when some find the prospect of Ordinary Time cheerless, like an ordinary meal or an ordinary job. But ordinary can also mean, and at its source primarily did mean, elegantly following a plan. Most would prefer ordinary digestion to one more eruptive. Ordinary can even be exciting, as when an acrobat swings through the air exploiting the ordinary expectations of gravity, graceful rather than clumsy. In some places, judges of probate are called the Ordinaries, because their authority is ex officio, and not specially delegated. To say a bishop is the Ordinary does not mean that he is unexceptional, although in the history of the Church mediocrity has not always been an impediment to preferment; it means that he is doing not my will but the will of him who sent me. Were most things not ordinary, there would be no complaint if trains never were on time or if clocks never kept the right time. There would be no point to schedules at all. The Liturgical Calendar is called an Ordo, and the set prayers of the Mass, except the Eucharistic Prayer, are the Ordinary of the Mass because they express the continuity of the Church s praise. The English have had their Book of Common Prayer, because it was intended to help people pray in common, not commonly: its classical diction was gorgeously uncommon. Most saints are unnoticed precisely because their virtues are so heroic that they are like a finely tuned car motor that seems silent. While extraordinary figures have ornamented the Church, usually the ones that get the most attention are out of step with God s design. Irving Berlin s song at the end of World War I was about a proud mother watching her son marching up the avenue with his regiment: Were you there and, tell me, did you notice? They were all out of step but Jim. Holy Mother Church indulges her children, but she does not nurture the illusion that disorder is order, or that noise is harmony, or that all the saints are out of step. Only God who orders all things knows what he wants his creatures to be. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (Jeremiah 1:5). So we are in God s image, and not in our own. One s self-image can disappoint. Thomas S. Jones, Jr., wrote: Across the fields of yesterday He sometimes comes to me, A little lad just back from play The lad I used to be. And yet he smiles so wistfully Once he has crept within, I wonder if he hopes to see The man I might have been. God does not want his creatures to be extraordinary. He wants us to be faithful. Humility is not banality. The right route to the Heavenly Gates is the one that snobs call routine.
