The theme for Lenten Midweek worship is "Living out our Baptism" As part of Lent, we will be collecting items each week for Lutheran World Relief personal care kits.

3 The theme for Lenten Midweek worship is "Living out our Baptism" As part of Lent, we will be collecting items each week for Lutheran World Relief personal care kits. Please bring the following items for these kits which will be packed here at Redeemer and sent around the world to help people in need. Week of March 13 - bath towel (lightweight and dark color preferred) Week of March 20 - soap (bars in original package) Week of March 27 - toothbrush (adult-sized) Week of April 3 - comb Week of April 10 - metal nail clippers (See below descriptions) What comes to mind when you think of Lent? You might think of ashes, bread and broth, extra time at church. Lent might remind us of purple, repentance, those little cardboard coin folders, and the notion of giving something up. I can remember talk of giving something up for Lent in my childhood home, but I experienced Olympian-level Lent when I attended a religious college. My classmates were determined to give up the most and to suffer accordingly. While giving up chocolate for six weeks seemed difficult enough for me, others decided to give up all candy, and some even determined to give up sugar completely! Maybe I didn t like giving something up because I lacked willpower. Maybe I knew I couldn t compete with someone who saw Lent as a contest to be won. Or maybe I sensed that such strict Lenten discipline would just remind me of failure. Lent is a time to focus more intentionally on our life with God. It is a season when we consider Jesus journey to the cross. And while Lenten themes include serious spiritual issues, it is most certainly not a time of failure. Instead, Lent reminds us over and over again of God s ultimate gift of love for us all love that even death cannot break. Perhaps changing our daily habits and giving something up will help us grow closer to God. But I believe there are also other ways to experience the fullness of Lent. Mid-Week Bread and Broth Schedule Wednesdays in Lent at 6 P.M. March 6th - Council (Ash Wednesday) One of our Sunday School classes here at Redeemer has decided to take something up for the Lenten season. They will be devoting their time and energy and offering to helping others putting into practice the radical love Jesus shows us throughout all of our days. March 13 - Choir March 20 - Thrivent March 27 - Communication & Stewardship April 3 - Worship & Music April 10 - Sunday School & Volunteers During this Lenten season, remember God's relentless love for you by choosing some act of love in return. Love yourself. Love your neighbor. Love your enemy. Try to love someone who seems unlovable. Pray for God s love to open hearts to receive Him, and dare to love as God so loves us. Continued prayers for Redeemer. Deborah Wegner Committee of Stewards This spring Redeemer will start distributing (via mail) the Living Lutheran magazine to member families. This magazine is published by the ELCA on a monthly basis, and connects Lutheran churches by illuminating ideas and programs undertaken by congregations throughout the country. It is also a source for understanding the ELCA s position on religious and civil affairs. This outreach project will be reviewed on an annual basis for its effectiveness. If you are currently personally subscribing to Living Lutheran, please contact the office to avoid double subscriptions. Dear Redeemer, I just want to thank the congregation for keeping my mother, Doris Kuhne, (at the Veterans Home), in your thoughts and prayers. The poinsettias for Christmas were beautiful. I remember bringing my mom when she was able, to a Christmas Eve Service and seeing the beautiful poinsettias on the Altar. Was touching to see my mom s name in the prayers section in the Sunday bulletin, when I pulled out the Home Touch to read to her. The Lutheran Church has always been an important part to mom s life. I appreciate that Redeemer continues to reach out to her!!! Sincerely, Karen Horwitz, her daughter.
