Message from Father George THINGS TO CONSIDER WITH OUR STEWARDSHIP from the Archdiocese Department of Stewardship and Outreach and Evangelism Saint Clement warns us that it is the passion for wealth, not the wealth itself, that condemns a man. Our attitude toward possessions reveals our true god and master. This may be troubling to us when we feel that we have made God our master and have kept all the commandments as did the rich young ruler. Christian stewardship of our souls and bodies is the offering of our entire self to God, attaching our desire to Him rather than to the world. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus shows us that the only lasting wealth is spiritual wealth, which comes from God. When we were baptized, we were given the light of Christ, symbolized by the baptismal candle. God lit His flame in our souls. The purpose of baptism is to make us lights to the world for Jesus. Jesus instructs us to let our light shine before others so that they may see our good works and give glory to our Father, Who is in heaven. As baptized Orthodox Christians, we are all called to witness through the quality of our lives to the experience of the risen Christ. We witness to Christ by the way we set our priorities in life. This is a time to re-examine those priorities - the way in which we share our time, our talents, and our possessions. We should challenge ourselves to look at our checkbook and see exactly what our true priorities are. Do you commit more to the cable television service than you do to your Church? Do you pay more for your daily newspaper or to the cable company than you do to support the spreading of the Good News of Christ? As Jesus told us, Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. On a night when the moon is full, it may seem huge as it lights up the night. But, if you think about it, the moon has no light of its own but only the light, which it receives from the sun. The light we see when the moon lights up the night is the reflected light of the sun. Just like the moon, we have no light of our own, only the light of Christ, Who told us that He is the light of the world. We received His light at our baptism, and we are called to reflect that light to all the world. What better way to begin to do that than by returning to Him through the work of the Church some portion of that with which He has blessed us. We are responsible and are held responsible by God for the light, His light, that we are reflecting in the world. Psalm 116 asks: What shall I give to the Lord in return for all His benefits toward me? The answer comes in the Divine Liturgy when we are invited to offer ourselves and our whole life to Christ our God. God does not ask us for a contribution because his Church is not a club to which we pay dues. He is asking for a total commitment OUR LIFE! LOST KEYS A set of keys that was found last week on the Cathedral grounds is in the office. Please contact Vickie, if they belong to you or if you are aware of someone searching for them.
3 AHEPA RAFFLE At the Palm Sunday Luncheon, AHEPA will raffle a beautiful icon of the Anastasi made by the Kellion of St. John the Baptist on Mount Athos. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for five tickets and will be on sale in the weeks leading up to Palm Sunday. GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY LUNCHEON Join Holy Trinity PTA for its annual Greek Independence Day Luncheon today, Sunday, March 26, in the gymnasium. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children not in the program. LENTEN FLOWERS SPONSORS The floral decorations that adorned the Panagia icon during the fourth Salutations to the Theotokos were donated anonymously. The Cathedral family sincerely thanks the donors for their generous contribution. PASCHA PICNIC Please consider helping with the Pascha Picnic, which will follow the Agape Vespers on Sunday, April 16, on the Cathedral grounds. Assistance is needed, and any member of the community that would like to serve as its chairperson or to help cook or set up is asked to contact the Cathedral office or a Parish Council member. Thank you for your consideration. PHILOPTOCHOS PHILOPTOCHOS COFFEE Philoptochos will host a coffee after the Akathist Hymn on Friday, March 31. Members, who wish to help by bringing Lenten desserts, may contact Mary Kontos or Helen Malachias to let them know what will be brought. PHILOPTOCHOS FOOD PANTRY Beginning last Sunday, March 19, and through the end of April Philoptochos will collect nonperishable food items for the needy families within the community. Food items needed are rice, dry cereal, lentils, dry beans, pasta (any type), boxed meals that do not require anything added except water, flour, sugar, canned meat, canned fruit, and canned vegetables. All community members are asked to help with this worthy project. Items may be placed in the basket in the Coffee Room. Thank you for your support. PHILOPTOCHOS MEETING The next Philoptochos meeting will be Saturday, April 1. Join Philoptochos members and share the desire to be of service and to give in some way your time, talents, or compassion to those in need. Philoptochos wishes to increase its membership to enable the organization to increase its philanthropy. Stewardship is $35 of which $15 is sent to the National Philoptochos and $7 goes to the Metropolis of Atlanta. The officers will be elected after the next meeting. STEWARDSHIP 2017 Now that Great Lent has arrived and our Lord's Holy Pascha approaches, thoughts and inclinations naturally encourage the faithful to be more involved in the life of the Church. This includes praying, fasting, alms giving, attending services, and receiving Holy Communion more frequently. It is also an excellent opportunity to go ahead and make your 2017 pledge, if you have not already done so. For those that have made a pledge, many thanks for your generosity. THE EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. THE GOSPEL Mark 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And, he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And, they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And, Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And, he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And, Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And, when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And, after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But, Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And, when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And, he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And, he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."
