2 Sunday April Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Apolytikion The women disciples of the Lord heard from the angel the joyful news of the Resurrection and the repeal of the sentence imposed upon our forefathers. With pride they said to the Apostles "Death is vanquished Christ our God is risen bestowing upon the world His great mercy." Apolytikion With the rivers of your tears you have made the barren desert fertile. Through sighs of sorrow from deep within you your labors have borne fruit a hundredfold. By your miracles you have become a light shining upon the world. O John our Holy Father pray to Christ our God to save our souls. Apolytikion for St. Vasilios Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. Kontakion To you Theotokos invincible Defender having been delivered from peril I your city dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might keep me safe from all trials that I may call out to you: "Hail unwedded bride!" Notice of Endowment Fund Grant Opportunity In accordance with the Investment Policy of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church the Investment Committee has met to recommend the grantable amount of the annual proceeds of the Endowment Fund. The total annual grantable amount is to be the total annual aggregate return (net of expenses) in excess of the CPI Index. In other words: Total Grantable Amount = Total Annual Return Expenses Inflation Fund Expenses The principal of the St. Vasilios Endowment Fund will remain inviolate and irrevocable. It is understood that following each calendar year end the investment committee will calculate the allowable granted amount based on the above formula. As such at each first general assembly of the year the investment committee will propose and recommend its use of the grant which must be approved by a majority of the general assembly. No annual grant giving is mandatory. Organizations and individuals of St. Vasilios are encouraged to submit their grant proposals in writing to the Investment Committee through the Church office no later than April The Endowment Fund may be used for any purpose consistent with the mission of the Church. This would include but not limited to such projects as the following: 1. Areas of need beyond the local church such as community services or mission projects. 2. Major improvements to space and facilities/capital improvements. 3. Unbudgeted maintenance of buildings and grounds. 4. Program initiatives for children youth or adult ministries. 5. Music program for special enhancements or additions. The complete Investment Policy is available for review at the church office. 2 11

3 Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm The Lord will give strength to his people. Verse: Bring to the Lord O sons of God bring to the Lord honor and glory. St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN when God made a promise to Abraham since he had no one greater by whom to swear he swore to himself saying "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham having patiently endured obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by someone + greater than themselves and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose he interposed with an oath so that through two unchangeable things in which it is impossible that God should prove false we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Πρὸς Ἑβραίους 6:13-20 HOLY WEEK READERS NEEDED We are looking for high school teens in grades 9-12 to assist with readings during the Holy Week services. 4 Sunday of St. John Climacus The Gospel of Mark 9:17-31 At that time a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher I brought my son to you for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out and they were not able." And he answered them "O faithless generation how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him immediately it convulsed the boy and he fell on the ground and rolled about foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father "How long has he had this?" And he said "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water to destroy him; but if you can do anything have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together he rebuked the unclean spirit saying to it "You dumb and deaf spirit I command you come out of him and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly it came out and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up and he arose. And when he had entered the house his disciples asked him privately "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples saying to them "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men and they will kill him; and when he is killed after three days he will rise." PTA COFFEE HOUR: Please join us for coffee hour today immediately following the first Divine Liturgy in the Educational Center. 5 The 27th Annual Metropolis of Boston Ministry Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday June at Lombardo s in Randolph Massachusetts. The Reception begins at 5:30 p.m. The theme of this year s Dinner is taken from I Timothy 4.12: Let no one despise your youth but set the believers an example in speech and conduct in love in faith in purity. As usual every Community has the opportunity to select an individual to be honored at this Dinner that has offered exemplary service to the Parish. In keeping with our Metropolis focus this year of reaching out to our Young Adults/Young Professionals we have selected a Young Adult (aged 25-50) who has taken the responsibility of Church service seriously and has begun to integrate it as a way of life. This years honoree is Sophia Nanis Pappas. There will be reservation forms in the bulletin and in the church office and we hope that many parishioners will attend the Banquet to support and honor Sophia and all the great things she has done for St. Vasilios. From our Choir: It was wonderful to see so many young people at the youth assembly a few days ago. Someone had asked if there was a way to have the music that sing every Sunday available to learn. I have sang most of the music we sing every Sunday and have put it online in our music page. Please visit the choir link in our website or go to St. Vasilios Choirs to listen to our liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside you are kindly asked to make an appointment during the week by calling the church office. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are only permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. HOSPITAL VISITS Salem Hospital is making a change in order to be in compliance with new privacy laws. This change will mean that we will no longer receive the list of Orthodox patients in the hospital. So if you or a loved one will be in the hospital please call the church office so that we can pay you a pastoral visit. This change will also affect Beverly Hospital as well. Also families of people in nursing home please call the church office so that their names will be included on the list of residents. LITURGY LIGHTS Mary Kaldes & family in memory of James Pappis.
