2 St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral Church Office Mon.-Fri.: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m Reverend Doctor Dimitrios Moraitis - Dean Reverend Father Nicholas Livingston - Associate Priest Reverend Father Dean N. Paleologos - Dean Emeritus Reverend Deacon Andrew Giourelis George Gourousis- Parish Council President - frdimitrim@gmail.com Metropolis of Boston WELCOME! Welcome to the Saint Spyridon Cathedral in Worcester, Massachusetts. We are honored that you have chosen to worship with us today. It is our hope that your visit here will bring you many blessings from God. Our Church Family worships the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and every Sunday, the Lord s Day, we commemorate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our mission is to live the Holy Gospel in accordance with the Orthodox Faith; towards sanctification through God s grace in worship, the Divine Liturgy and the Sacraments: glorifying God through all joys and struggles; and as a Church Community, in Christian love, we seek to do His will so that through His mercy, we may attain His Kingdom. We are blessed to have the slippers of St. Spyridon, which are located in a reliquary at the front-left of the Church; please be sure to venerate them. Also, please be reminded that one must be an Orthodox Christian in order to receive Holy Communion. Be sure to tell us if you are visiting or if you are new to our community. If you would like more information about embracing the Orthodox Faith, please see Father Dimitrios or Father Nicholas after the Divine Liturgy concludes. We pray you have a blessed day and that you visit with us again soon. March 31, Sunday of Veneration of the Cross 31 Μαρτίου, Κυριακή της Σταυροπροσκυνήσεως VENERATION OF THE CROSS Today we celebrate the Holy Cross of our Lord. We will have a special procession around the church at the end of Divine Liturgy to honor and venerate it. Entrance Hymns Apolytikion Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. For the Cross Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance. Grant victory to the faithful against the adversaries of the faith, and protect your people by the power of Your Cross Saint Spyridon At the First Synod you were manifest as a champion,* and a wonder-worker, our God-bearing Father Spyridon.* Wherefore, you spoke to one dead in the tomb,* and a serpent you changed into gold.* And while chanting your sacred services,* you had angels celebrating with you, O most holy one.* Glory to Him who glorified you!* Glory to Him who crowned you!* Glory to Him who through you works healings for everyone. Kontakion O Champion General,* I your City now inscribe to you* Triumphant anthems* as the tokens of my gratitude,* being rescued from the terrors, O Theotokos.* Inasmuch as, you have power unassailable,* from all kinds of perils free me, so that unto you* I may cry aloud:* Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.

ΤΗΕ EPISTLE O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance. To You, O Lord, I cry; O my God, may You not pass over me in silence. St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-5:6 Brethren, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Gospel According to Mark 8:34-9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." FASTING / ΝΗΣΤΕΙΑ During the Lenten Fast, the Church calls us to abstain from all meat and dairy products until Pascha, with wine & oil allowed during the weekends only. As always, fast as earnestly as you are able, and if you have never fasted, try something small. Remember, a true fast is when we keep our mind on the Lord and reject sinful passions.
