We are so happy that you are worshipping with us today! If you are visiting, please fill out a "Visitor Information Card," located in the Narthex, and give it to a Parish Council member at the candle stand in the Narthex. If you are an Orthodox Christian new to the Columbus area, or you would like to know more about becoming an Orthodox Christian, please introduce yourself to one of the priests who would be most happy to meet with you and discuss membership in our Cathedral. It is our desire that you make the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral your spiritual home! May God richly bless you and your family! FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all Christians not fully united with us. It is a consequence of the sad divisions of Christianity that we cannot extend to all a general invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community signifying an oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.

Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother, for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

3 He Who Is God Hebrews 6:13-20, especially verse 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath. As the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius observes, The universe is change. While we, like the ancients, experience the universality of change, in Christ we are blessed to know the greater, certain, and unchanging reality of God. God does not change, but indelibly makes Himself known. All may dip into the stream of holy tradition at any point in history and meet the unchanging, immutable God. When the new light of Christ broke through upon the world, the Lord added promises to His earlier pledges. As our knowledge of God increases, He remains the same. We discern Him more clearly, for we have found that the God who promises also keeps His word. In the today s passage from Hebrews, the Apostle Paul addresses God s immutability. He anchors his teaching to the unvarying nature of God. Let us consider what we may learn about this immutable Lord we worship. God is the greatest Being we could ever encounter or imagine (verse 13). No matter what category we choose goodness, power, truth, knowledge, value, reliability, stability God exceeds our very definition of that category. Thus we rightly call Him Good One, almighty, the Truth, all-knowing, unchanging, and so on. Being ultimate, God reigns supreme over all who claim to speak the truth (verses 13 and 18). We note, however, that God always gives us cause to believe in Him, knowing full well that we are accustomed to lies and half-truth. He swears an oath of fidelity and truth to us. What surety do we have that there is no deception in the Word of God? First and foremost, He swears by Himself. For this reason the Lord Jesus pointedly asks, What greater than God do you require? (see Matthew 23:16-22). God blesses us especially when we trust Him (Hebrews 6:14). In this verse, the Apostle again quotes the Genesis account (22:1-17) of Abraham. Can we imagine a greater trust in the veracity of God than that which Abraham exhibited? Truthfully, God ever proves Himself faithful to the word that He spoke to Abraham a truth He sustains to this day. God is our strong consolation (Hebrews 6:18), no matter what happens. Saint Paul says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, Who comforts us in all our tribulation....for as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ (II Corinthians 1:3-5). What about those times when we are wounded unfairly, or when we have fallen and then desire to repent? Let us come with our heartaches to Christ, who cares and consoles. Our God is refuge and strength, a helper in afflictions which mightily befall us (Psalm 45:1). In God we always have ground for hope. Our task is to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast (Hebrews 6:18-19). This hope is personal as well, for God offers Himself to us. We may cry out to Him with confidence, O Lord, Thou art my hope from my youth (Psalm 70:4). Finally, the Apostle Paul reassures us that the immutable God is ever accessible (Hebrews 6:19-20). Christ our High Priest is present before God the Father. As fellow man and Savior of all, He is beyond the veil that separates God from mankind, ever interceding for us. O Christ, unchanging One, my only Hope, hasten to my great need and save me!

PROKEIMENON Grave Tone The Lord will give strength to his people. Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory. Saint Paul s Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

6 The Proclamation of the Holy Gospel The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark the Evangelist 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."

7 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Becoming an Apostle Christ told His disciples, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. When He called them, they gave up their profession and their families and left everything to devote themselves to His work. Are we not also called to follow Him? Does this mean we are to give up our livelihood and leave our families. No! Only a few are called in such a manner, but we are still called to become His Apostles. How can we do this if we are not able to pack up and head for a mission somewhere in the world? How about the needs of our own Church? Attendance to church services is not so great. Less than 25% of our members will be found in the church on Sundays. We are lucky if we see them on Christmas or Pascha. How about ourselves? Are we responsible for this lack of participation in the Sacramental life of the Church? What effort have we made to urge others to come and participate? How effective are we on Sunday at rousing all of our family members to get up and get ready to get to Church before the service begins. Do we just satisfy ourselves with getting to Church on time? Can we say that we are a leader for Christ? When we are moved by a sermon do we share it with others? When we are cleansed and spiritually uplifted by participation in the Sacraments do we encourage others to do the same? Do we think the job of spreading the message of the Gospel is the work of the Church alone? This is not the correct view as from the earliest days of the Church, all of Christ s followers were active in spreading the Gospel message. Every Christian is called and capable of being a preacher of the Gospel message. It is not necessary to go to Africa or some other exotic place to be a missionary. You can become one in your own home, your neighborhood, and parish community. As Bishop Augoustinos writes: Every Christian should consider himself a little Apostle in the world. No legitimate cause can interfere with a missionary endeavor. If he is a fervent Christian, wherever he is, he will find an opportunity to speak about Christ. At home, at school, at college, on boats, in every place there are souls who seek light and salvation, the believer can throw out his net. Even if he does not achieve much; even if he saves one sinner from the brink of destruction he will be considered great in the eye of the Lord. The Stewardship Thought of the Day is borrowed from Orthodox Way of Life blog: posted March 16, WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT... You will be enriched in every way, so that you can be generous on every occasion and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. Saint Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians 9:11
