He is celebrated today because his book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, is a sure guide to the ascetic life, written by a great man of prayer experienced in all forms of the monastic polity; it teaches the seeker after salvation how to lay a sound foundation for his struggles, how to detect and war against each of the passions, how to avoid the snares laid by the demons, and how to rise from the rudimental virtues to the heights of Godlike love and humility. It is held in such high esteem that it is universally read in its entirety in monasteries during the Great Fast.

4 St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 EPISTLE READING 4th Sunday of Lent BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. 5 GOSPEL READING The Gospel According to Mark 9: th Sunday of Lent At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise." 6 PRAYERS BEFORE HOLY COMMUNION I believe and confess, Lord, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is truly Your pure Body and that this is truly Your precious Blood. Therefore, I pray to You, have mercy upon me, and forgive my transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, known and unknown. And make me worthy without condemnation to partake of Your pure Mysteries for the forgiveness of sins and for life eternal. Amen. How shall I, who am unworthy, enter into the splendor of Your saints? If I dare to enter into the bridal chamber, my clothing will accuse me, since it is not a wedding garment; and being bound up, I shall be cast out by the angels. In Your love, Lord, cleanse my soul and save me. Loving Master, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, let not these holy Gifts be to my condemnation because of my unworthiness, but for the cleansing and sanctification of soul and body and the pledge of the future life and kingdom. It is good for me to cling to God and to place in Him the hope of my salvation. Receive me today, Son of God, as a partaker of Your mystical Supper. I will not reveal Your mystery to Your adversaries. Nor will I give You a kiss as did Judas. But as the thief I confess to You: Lord, remember me in Your kingdom.

Luminaries Honor the memory of a loved one with a luminary to light our procession of the Epitaphion on Holy Friday. I need to have a final count of the girls participating by Friday-April 7th so we can plan baskets and order the rose petals that are needed. The girls are required to wear white dresses, white sweaters (if you have short sleeves) and white dress shoes. 11 Welcome Ministry For our Sunday School Students: A Chance to be a Part of the Welcome Ministry Our focus is to provide an experience for our students of welcoming people to our church and how the Narthex plays into not only welcoming our new guests but the chance to say hi to the parishioners. This is a learning experience for the students as we show love and respect for our church. There should be only one student (starting at first grade) who will work with the adult ministry volunteer to give out bulletins, learn how to acknowledge the special day (i.e. memorials etc.), help with the offering and to learn from the Parish Council the rhythm of the candle lighting including 3 and 5 day candles. If you would like your student to be a part of the ministry, please contact Deborah Bowen at the church office. The student will be expected to be at the church before 10:00 a.m. on their assigned Sundays. MORE NEWS FROM THE PARISH! No one is allowed in the PLC garage under the age of 18 yrs old unless accompanied by an adult. There are many items placed in the garage on high shelves and accidents can happen. Please help us to keep the doors closed and locked. Church Property and Buildings Our community is very excited about the growth with events, meetings, and parties that we are now experiencing. Our Parish Life Center has added so much to our capabilities of having more rooms in our church building available for classes and the Center itself is available for meetings, as well as events for our parishioners of all ages. Please be aware that if you plan to meet or use the church facilities in any manner, you should contact the church office to check for any conflicts on the calendar. Our office administrator is Deborah Bowen and she will be glad to work with you with your requests. The Parish Life Center is available for rental and we do have a Food Ministry that can provide catering or you can provide your own. Rental Costs Are $200/day + $100 clean up fee. If you are interested, contact the church office for information and costs.
