8 EPISTLE READING Let Us Be Attentive.. Verse: Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them. God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel Wisdom.. The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1 Let us be Attentive.. BRETHREN, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. 8

9 GOSPEL READING The Reading is from Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" 9

11 MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS NEWS The holidays are fast approaching! Philoptohos and Philanthropia, are working together to help the Los Angeles Mission before winter and the holidays arrive. We contacted the Mission and they are in need of plain coffee, boxes of plain Cheerios or plain Corn Flakes. In the cold winter months that will be coming later, the Mission serves a huge number of people in the mornings. They have been out on the streets during the night and are cold and hungry when morning arrives. Our community cannot ignore its neighbors who are so close to us. The Los Angeles Mission helps so many people that are in desperate need, their work is enormous. Beginning Sunday, October 23 rd, we will be collecting plain coffee, Cheerios and/or corn flakes, on the side of the church near the collection bins. The last day for collections will be Sunday, November 13 th. When you are doing your grocery shopping, perhaps you could pick up an item and donate it for the Mission. Please do not buy sugary cereals or flavored coffees. I have faith that our community will reach out and help with this effort. Any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated! Our next general assembly meeting will be Sunday, October 23 rd immediately after church in the residence apartment complex. Tina Russek, from the Los Angeles Mission, will give a short presentation and talk about the Mission. Tina will be speaking right after lunch so be sure to come over to the apartment complex as soon as church is over. We would love to have you join us. The Thanksgiving Luncheon will be held on Sunday, November 20 th, 1:00 p.m. at the Wilson Hardy Clubhouse. Reservations must be made in advance and are $22 per person. Everyone is invited to attend. There will be a reservation form in the October and November Herald Newsletters. Valet parking will be available. The price increase is not what we planned, but the caterer increased his price this year. We know this location at Griffith Park may not be convenient, but our hall is not ready yet. Next year we will be back on the church grounds in our new Fellowship Hall! For we are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. 12 PHILOPTOHOS VIP NEWS MINISTRY NEWS (continued) Bus Trip to San Gabriel Mission - Tuesday, October 25, 2011: On Tuesday please come and join us to visit the San Gabriel Mission, a historic architectural landmark. The Mission is rich in the history and traditions of early California. We will visit the Mission Church, the museum, the beautiful grounds and garden. Then we will go to lunch at Twohey s restaurant. Lunch will include 2 choices: (1) Turkey Sandwich and fries, OR (2) Cheeseburger and fries. Both choices will include a drink, coffee, and dessert. After lunch we will visit St. Steven s Serbian Orthodox Church in Alhambra. The cost of the trip is $30 per person which includes bus transportation, mission entry and lunch. For reservations please call Mary Kezios or Athena Lolonis at Paid reservations are required. Please address your check to Philoptohos VIP and indicate choice of lunch. 13 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) PHILANTHROPIA MINISTRY NEWS PHILANTHROPIA TEAM BOARD MEETING: Coming up on Sunday, October 30 th, we will have our annual meeting, immediately following Divine Liturgy. A specific time and place on the church grounds will be forthcoming. Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Thank you. As we begin the new year, the following are some scheduled projects: NAMI WALKS National Alliance on Mental Illness: On October 1, 2011 we sponsored walkers. Please check out their website at infor@nami.org 27 th AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES: We are sponsoring a walker on October 16 th for further information, please contact Barbara Kappos at bkappos@aol.com LOS ANGELES MISSION: Philanthropia is partnering with Philoptohos to collect plain coffee and cereal needed at the L.A. Mission. Details as to where to deposit donations will be forthcoming. CITY OF HOPE PEDIATRIC MEMORIAL BOOKLET: This is now our 9 th year sponsoring the Memorial Service and Booklet for the City of Hope Medical Center Pediatric Unit. Our liaison, Dr. Randi McAllister, on the Pediatric staff, together with a team of doctors and nurses, host the parents and families to remember their children who were victims to cancer. Each parent and family have a page dedicated to their child with pictures, love notes, poems, etc.; a way of helping the family deal with the loss of the child. Please mail your donations to the Philanthropia Inc Crebs Ave. Tarzana, As always, thank you so much for your concern and support. USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. The two new receptacles for "used clothing" and "canned goods" are working great. They are located side by side, in the general area of the chapel. Thank you! 14 COMMUNITY NEWS SAINT SOPHIA CAMP ANNIVERSARY - INVITATION This Friday, October 14, 2011 we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Saint Sophia Camp at our annual Golf Tournament Banquet and Awards dinner. We invite all the former Mr. and Mrs. Club Members instrumental in starting our camping program, all the former camp committee chairmen, former camp directors, staff, and counselors who have participated in our program throughout the years, to join us for this special event. The Golf Tournament will take place during the day at the Montebello Golf Course with the banquet dinner following in the clubhouse at 5:00 pm. (Please see flyer on next page) Dinner is $40/person, but is included if one is playing golf in the tournament. Please RSVP for the Golf Tournament and/or the banquet dinner to Georgia Vasila ( ) and mention how you participated in the camping program. We all have good memories of camp!
