2 Message from Father George THE TRIODION BEGINS TODAY Today, we enter the season of the Church calendar called the Triodion. It is named for the liturgical book that is used in the Church in preparation for Holy Pascha (Easter). The book contains readings and hymns used from today until Holy Pascha. In the Triodion the canons for weekday Matins have only three odes and so are known as "triodes" after which the Triodion takes its name. The period which the book covers extends from the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee (the tenth week before Pascha, twenty-two days before the beginning of Great Lent) and concludes with the Midnight Office of Holy Saturday. The Triodion contains the propers for the Pre- Lenten period, beginning with a week in which there is no fasting even on Wednesdays and Fridays, which are normally kept as fast days throughout the year (with few exceptions). The following week is called the Apókreō (literally: the "Leave-taking from Meat") in Greek. It coincides with the Carnival celebrations which, although officially discouraged by the Church as pagan remnants, are very popular. The Apokreo marks the change of diet to the fasting practice of Lent: meat is no longer eaten after "Apokreo Sunday" (i.e. the 8th Sunday before Easter), while for the following week the Tyrinĕ, that culminates on Tyrinē Sunday (literally: "Cheese Sunday" or "Cheesefare ) just before Clean Monday, milk and dairy products, but not meat or eggs, may be eaten. The Forty Days of Great Lent begins on Clean Monday, which is March 11 this year. During Great Lent the Orthodox Christians essentially take on a vegan type diet with the addition that on many days the use of oil is excluded as well. On two specific feasts during Lent (the Annunciation and Palm Sunday), fish is allowed. The fast is prescribed until Pascha. So, remember, during the first week of the Triodion period there is no fasting in the Church, except for the morning before you receive Holy Communion at any scheduled Divine Liturgy. Some of this text is from: BOOK CLUB The next Book Club meeting will be held on Friday, February 22, at 10:00 am in the Coffee Room. The book is called The Heart by Archimandrite Spyridon Logothetis. Everyone is welcome. If you need a copy of the book to read, please speak with Presvytera Harriet. MARCH ISSUE OF THE FLAME Please submit all information for the March issue of The Flame by Friday, February 22. SATURDAY OF SOULS Saturday of Souls forms were mailed in the February issue of The Flame. Once completed, please submit it to the Cathedral office or present it on the morning of the service prior to the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. This year the three Saturdays are March 2, 9, and 16. Remember to include only the first names of your Orthodox Christian loved ones. Once names are presented, they are commemorated for all subsequent services. The 2019 Stewardship packets were mailed last week. They include the 2018 Stewardship Statements for those that made a pledge last year. Also enclosed is the 2019 Stewardship Form, which all parishioners are asked to complete and return to the Cathedral office as soon as possible. Please consider increasing your pledge by at least 10%. Many people are still paying what they paid thirty years ago! The Church s bills have increased greatly in this time period. Moreover, do not forget that you can pay online by going to the Cathedral website ( clicking on "Stewardship" along the top of the home page and then on "Online Form" within the body of the text. It is a fast, convenient method that uses a credit card and also allows you to schedule recurring payments.

Resurrection Apolytikion Plagal Tone 1 Let us worship the Word who is unoriginate with the Father and the Spirit, and from a Virgin was born for our salvation, O believers, and let us sing His praise. For in His goodness He was pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, and to undergo death, and to raise up those who had died, by His glorious Resurrection. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 4 Let us flee the Pharisee's exalted parlance; let us learn the Publican's humble demeanor, and with sighs unto the Savior cry out and say, To us be gracious, O only forgiving Lord.

THE EPISTLE 2 Timothy 3:10-15 You shall guard us, O Lord; You shall preserve us. Save me, O Lord, for the holy man has ceased. TIMOTHY, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at lconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. THE GOSPEL Luke 18:10-14 The Lord said this parable, "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
