It is with great pleasure that I accept the call of the vestry to become your next rector. I am grateful for the work of the whole parish as you supported the profile committee, search committee, wardens, and vestry of Trinity Church. My wife, Kelly, and I are excited to be coming to live among you in Towson, and I am eager to begin our mutual ministry as we proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and celebrate the mysteries of our faith. The vestry and I have agreed to begin our journey together on May 1, Trinity Church is an exciting parish, and I consider myself blessed to be called to serve as your rector. The community emphasis on worship, music, education, evangelism and Christian service is evident. Your love for one another and Trinity Church was clear when I met with members of the search committee and vestry during the process. From Trinity s Senior Warden: April 2011 I come to you after serving Christ Church in Cleveland, NC as rector since June 2007, and understand that there will be a short article of introduction in the April 2011 issue of the Trinity Times. The Saunders family is looking forward to meeting everyone and getting to know you in the months to come. All of you are in my prayers, and I ask that you keep my family and I in yours during the transition and move to Towson. May God bless the start of our ministry together, and may God s blessings be with you all as you continue a Holy Lent in preparation for a full celebration of Our Lord s resurrection! Ken Saunders and work with him on his employment details with Trinity, I wish to communicate some very favorable thoughts to the congregation: First, we have in Ken an energetic and dedicated personality. I have watched many business management styles in my career. Spiritual leadership is certainly not the same as the requirements for business but frankly I believe there are crossover attributes. We need to get things done. We need to motivate those who want to contribute their time and talent. We need to recruit those who need us and call them family. Working with Ken I get the sense that with a little time and discernment of this congregation's needs he will be ready to lead. We need to do our part. Communicate your highest priorities for Trinity. Join one of our committees. Perhaps suggest a new approach or activity in our life at church that you always thought might be valuable. Folks - there is no better time than now to participate in the glory of Trinity - think of the impact you could make with this fresh start. I am excited - I hope you are. Chris Adler

2 Page 2 Biography -- The Reverend Kenneth H. Saunders III The Rev. Kenneth H. Saunders III ( Ken ) comes to Trinity Church after serving Christ Church in Cleveland, NC as rector since July of He earned his Master of Divinity Degree at The University of the South; School of Theology in Sewanee, TN and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Management (Magna cum laude) at The University of North Carolina at Asheville. Ken is a cradle Episcopalian with a diverse background. He was born and raised in the Tidewater area of Virginia, graduated from Frederick Military Academy in Portsmouth, VA, and attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC. After leaving the Citadel he was trained as a nuclear technician (health physics & radiological controls) and worked for Westinghouse under a joint Department of Energy/ Department of Defense contract. He left Westinghouse and traveled the southeast (and mid-west) as a custom builder, restructuring and setting up residential construction businesses for various corporate and private owners. During his travels as a lay person, Ken served the church in several capacities such as cantor, choir member, musician, lector, LEM, acolyte trainer, teacher, youth group leader, vestry and finance committee member, and sacristan. While in Western North Carolina, Ken finally answered the call from God to the ordained ministry of the Episcopal Church that he had been wrestling with most of his life. Ken is married to Kelly Saunders and they have three children, Kent, Kyle, and Kaytlynn. Kelly is a degreed paralegal, but works as an Office Assistant for Rowan County Department of Social Services in Adult Services since Their oldest son, Kent, is married to Amy Saunders and serves in the United States Air Force, stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, WA. Kyle is employed by Lowe s Foods and hopes to attend East Carolina University in the fall. Kaytlynn will graduate from West Rowan High School in June and hopes to attend Towson University. At the beginning of 2011, Ken was chosen to be a Canterbury Scholar and go on Anglican Pilgrimage in Canterbury from May 29 th to June 13 th. This will be an intense period of spiritual renewal and exposure to the diversity of the world wide Anglican Communion. This will not only benefit Ken, but will also be an asset to Trinity at the beginning of our mutual ministry. Ken will move to Towson at the end of April, and begin at Trinity on May 1, Kelly and Kaytlynn will join him after Kaytlynn graduates from High School in June. Please help ken get to know us! When Stephanie arrived, we put together a photo album with pictures of Trinity parishioners, which she has found helpful. We would like to expand that album, for Ken to use as he tries to get to know us all at one time a daunting prospect! If you are new to Trinity since last year, or if you didn t contribute a picture at that time, please send one now, to represent your household in the book. 4 Page 4 Fasting and Feasting Lent should be more than a time of fasting. It should also be a joyous season of feasting. Lent is a time to fast from certain things and to feast on others. It is a season in which we should: Fast from judging others; Feast on the Christ dwelling in them. Fast from emphasis on differences; Feast on the unity of all life. Fast from apparent darkness; Feast on the reality of light. Fast from thoughts of illness; Feast on the healing power of God. Fast from words that pollute; Feast on phrases that purify. Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude. Fast from anger; Feast on patience. Fast from pessimism; Feast on optimism. Fast from worry; Feast on divine order. Fast from complaining; Feast on affirmatives. Fast from unrelenting pressures; Feast on unceasing prayer. Fast from hostility; Feast on nonresistance. Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness. The exercises require no artistic expertise all you need is an open heart and mind. Planning The Welcome Liturgy For Trinity s New Rector Now we know who Trinity s next rector will be, and Kathleen Capcara, Director of Evangelism and Christian Formation, is leading the creation of a Eucharistic Celebration to welcome the Rev. Ken Saunders. Our planning will reveal enough fascinating details about Episcopal worship to allow us to plan a service that will be inspirational and meaningful to people of all ages and interests. Celebrate Spring The Way Your Ancestors Did As we move out from under the cold and dark skies of winter, the air of spring is especially sweet. Each spring, our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate the feast of the Passover, remembering how God led them out of bondage in Egypt and through the waters of the Red Sea into freedom. Since the third century, our ancestors in faith have recognized the spring Feast of Easter as the Christian Passover. But Easter morning is just one part of our celebration of Easter. Those of us who have experienced a Jewish Seder meal can recognize that it weaves together several aspects of the Exodus event - slavery under the Pharaoh, the plagues God sent upon Egypt and the escape by passing through the waters into freedom. In the same way, our Christian Passover is seamlessly commemorated through the events of Holy Week. Jesus last supper and betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane, his trial and journey to Calvary and his death and resurrection were remembered by early Christians in one unitive feast. Although we now celebrate these sacred events in liturgies spread over three days, Easter can only be experienced in its full glory by worshiping and remembering together on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. When we walk through Holy Week as the Trinity community, we can see and feel on the deepest level that the true mystery of Easter is that God made it happen by working in and through suffering. When we emerge from the more somber liturgies of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, we feel the joy of Easter morning as fully as we savor that first breath of warm air on a bright spring morning after the last cold snap of winter. Kathleen Capcara, Director of Evangelism and Formation This year, after unveiling the Alleluia Trinity Children Singing on Easter banner that we buried in the Columbarium on Shrove Tuesday, children ages 2 14 will join their voices in celebration of the Resurrection at the 9:00 Family service on Easter Day, Sunday, April 24. Doris Heckathorn and the Music Team will accompany the children as they sing. An Egg Hunt on Trinity s lawn follows the service.

5 Page 5 Thanks to the Reverend Stephanie Yancy Trinity Church has come to another passage in our parish life. As we prepare to welcome our newly-called rector, The Rev. Kenneth Saunders, we also bid farewell to The Rev. Stephanie Yancy, who has ably served as our Interim Rector since February, During the past fifteen months, Stephanie has presided at Sunday, weekday and special worship services, visited the sick, attended almost countless meetings, and listened to our disappointments, joys, and sorrows as we shared them at coffee hours, Sunday breakfasts, and receptions. We are thankful for the love, kindness, and support Stephanie has shown us during this challenging time. We are grateful for the things we have been able to accomplish together, especially improving communications among staff and parish committees. Stephanie s influence will not be forgotten as she leaves to take on a new ministry in another congregation. We pray that our time together has been pleasing to God and we wish Stephanie well in her future ministry, at St. George s Church in Hampstead, knowing that we all remain one in the Lord. Remember to join us at the Second Sunday breakfast at 10:00 a.m. on April 10 so you can share your personal good wishes with Stephanie as she and Trinity both move in new directions. Only 2 More 2nd Sunday Breakfasts! Since September 2010, on the 2nd Sunday of every month, Trinity parishioners and friends have enjoyed a sit -down breakfast, complete with flowers, tablecloths, real dishes, and cloth napkins. We are ending the 2011 program year with two special breakfasts. Plan to bring your family and join us for a hot, tasty meal at 10 :00 in Memorial Hall on these 2 Sundays in the spring: April 10: Trinity Parishioners have many reasons to gather and thank Stephanie Yancy for her 15 months as our Interim Rector. Many people have spoken of their appreciation of The Rev. Yancy s excellent sermons, her inclusion of children around the altar at Communion, and her welcoming presence at all the liturgies over which she presides. Gather with us at breakfast on April 10 to add your voice to the chorus of appreciation for The Rev. Stephanie Yancy s ministry at Trinity Church. May 8: Trinity s mothers, Sunday school teachers, and youth leaders all truly change lives as they share the Good News of God s love with our children and youth. Join us in showing our appreciation on May 8 at a special breakfast at 10 o clock in Memorial Hall. Mementos and awards will be given to all mothers and to those who teach on Sunday mornings. Spring Planting Sunday May 15 This is our day to wear jeans to church, then stay to give 1½ hours of our time helping to make Trinity Church and its grounds really sparkle. Every age and capability can work together on projects to beautify the church for spring, AND share a delicious, nutritious lunch. You can choose what project to work on, then you will know what tools you should bring, We ll work from 10:15 AM to 12:15 (though some people may need to leave for the 11:00 service), breaking for lunch and refreshments as needed. Even if you forget to sign up, just come to Memorial Hall on May 15 (with garden tools); you will be given instructions on how to proceed. Persons of all ages are encouraged to participate; young children must be accompanied by an adult who will work with the child. Required consumable materials will be furnished, but each person should bring their own tools if tools are needed for the project of choice. Spring Planting Sunday is sponsored by the Property and Hospitality & Evangelism Committees. This is a really fun event, so let us know you're coming so we can plan adequately. 6 Page 6 A Message From Our Treasurer and Former Treasurer Dear Fellow Parishioners: As we close the books on 2010, the operating budget of the Church was essentially break-even and in-line with forecasts. Giving was flat with last year s levels but down 5% from We did, however, lose some other sources of revenue for the Church, such as the Korean Congregation, so even though your Vestry and the Staff have been able to reduce expenses (9% in 2010 and 17% since 2008) this has brought operations to breakeven. On January 22 nd, your Vestry met to approve an operating budget for Given a variety of factors, especially our aging physical plant, this was a challenging process. The 2011 operating budget calls for a deficit approximately $37,500 and comes with a challenge to the congregation. While the budget assumes a continued decline in many revenue sources, the Church needs approximately $317,000 of giving directly from the congregation to achieve the budget. As of writing this column, total giving to Trinity for 2010 was approximately $297,000. Turning to the expense side of the budget, 58% of expenses are personnel costs (including the costs of bringing in a new rector) with another 27% needed to keep the buildings operating and the office open. 11% of expenses reflect giving back to the community at large or the diocese, with the remainder (4%) reflecting the costs of worship, including music and the education offerings. As a final note and a reflection of both the good and bad of Trinity s aging buildings, the costs of heating the Church and Memorial Hall declined over 24% year-over-year and have been cut in half since the HVAC project was completed; however, these savings were needed to make other repairs to our physical plant. We would argue that the HVAC project can be called a success, but point out that pledges and contributions to pay off the costs of the project continue to remain very low and Trinity continues to carry a loan of approximately $150,000 that was used to help fund the project. Steve Finamore and Matthew Roswell, Treasurer and Former Treasurer Trinity Episcopal Children s Center Bubbles With Spring Enthusiasm! TECC has had a busy couple of months! We wrapped up February with our 4 th Annual Silent Auction, in which we were able to raise $12,000! The proceeds from this year s auction will be going towards the installation of a new shade awning for the large outside playground. Installation will take place during Holy Week while the children are on spring break. Be sure to take a peek outside on the playground after Easter services to check it out! March and April have and will continue to be busy! In March, the children got a visit from the one and only Dr. Bubbles. He not only taught them about the science of bubbles, he showed them the many different everyday items you can use to make a bubble. He even put some of the children and teachers inside a GIANT bubble! As you know, our children are continuously on the LOOK OUT for Box Tops from grocery items that they collect throughout the year for The Ark preschool for homeless children downtown. The proceeds from the latest round of collections provided enough money for TECC to send Dr. Bubbles to The Ark for their children to experience as well. Liz Harlan had the pleasure of joining Dr. Bubbles for the presentation and some additional bubble play time with the kids. They were covered in bubble from their head to their toes! The children from The Ark will also be coming out in May for a Pizza Play date with our kids. In April, TECC turns their community service efforts toward Heifer International. We will be spending the first week of April teaching the children about the organization and how it teaches and helps different communities all around the world. Each class will select an animal that they would like to buy, raising money by doing chores at home. The entire school will work together to bake food for an all school bake sale at Meadowood Park on Thursday April 7 th. We hope to raise $500 to buy a cow! The week was a great success last year, and all of us at TECC are looking forward to the experience again with all our families.
