St. Paul s Episcopal Church on PCHS grounds was host to a beautiful wedding this spring. The day was perfect. The young couple chose St. Paul s as the something old in their traditional wedding day celebration. St. Paul s provided an ideal setting for an early spring day. The wedding party made good use of the new structure as they lined up to enter the building. 2 Central Square). The building came to the museum in 1970 when the Glenwood congregation merged with Alexandria. Emmanuel still holds a service there each year so that the building remains a consecrated church. (From the Pope Co. Museum blog.) On Sunday, August 30th we will celebrate Eucharist again at St. Paul s, followed by our annual picnic at the Chalet. While you are in the church, take a look around to see the condition of the inside of the church. Museum Director, Merlin Peterson has identified projects to help preserve the church building (in no particular order): Entry floor sand and finish wood floor, approximately 3 ft x 8 ft. Windows replace two cracked panes with matching stained glass. Chancel windows The stained glass is in great shape thanks to fiberglass panel storm windows on the outside. The fiberglass however is rapidly deteriorating and needs replacement. A clear replacement will allow more light to shine through and brighten the beautiful glass as viewed from the inside. Exit stairs the exterior exit stairs from the pastor s office need to be replaced. Storm windows There are about six storm windows that need painting. Minor carpentry repairs to exterior trim work. Repairs to the roof at the base of the steeple and at the chimney. Start a capital fund to replace the cedar roof. Paint the interior 5 gallons of paint to match the current color. Repair / redecorate pastor's room. Landscape plants two bridal wreath spirea. Exterior sign update or replace the previous sign and reinstall. Develop interpretation panel or brochure for visitors about St. Paul s, past and present. This can promote the mission of St. Paul s / Emmanuel. Inspect and document the building condition annually to record needs and accomplishments. Inspect electrical wiring. While we have given the Museum $100 each year, I will be asking the congregation to approve an increase in that amount next year to cover some of these expenses. And, of course, you can always make individual donations. Just put St. Paul s Church on the memo line of your check. And don t forget to wear your Emmanuel T-Shirts to the picnic! SENIOR WARDEN REPORT CHURCH DIRECTORY In November 2014, you received a copy of the Emmanuel church directory which will be used until at least the end of If there are any changes in your information that you would like to have added to the directory, please let me know. Any changes will ed to everyone so we can keep the directory current. LECTORS, USHERS, AND COFFEE Thanks to the many church members who are always willing to lector, usher, or provide coffee. We are a small church so everyone needs to share in these important ministries. If you are interested in lecturing or ushering but feel that you need a little training, just give me a call. ALTAR GUILD Thanks to the new members of the Altar Guild - Sheila, Donna, and Tim. Rachael and Verlie will be joining Altar Guild in the fall. Thanks also to Edith for delaying her "retirement" to help the new members. There is still plenty of room for more members. DEANN RUNGE DeAnn is a very valuable member of our church. She does the monthly newsletter and takes care of phone calls and . DeAnn is also an extremely talented seamstress who has won many ribbons at the Douglas County Fair. The July 22 "Life" section of the Alexandria Echo Press has a great article about DeAnn and her mother. Remember our yearly 1928 Service and Picnic will be held on August 30 at the museum and park in Glenwood. Karen

3 Hymn of the Month By Tim Johnson Hymn #305 - First Line Title: Come, risen Lord, and deign to be our guest Tune Name: Rosedale Text Author: George Wallace Briggs ( ) - Tune Composer: Leo Sowerby ( ) When we met to select hymns for the summer, the Friends of Music Committee chose a title from the Holy Eucharist section of the Hymnal to serve as our Hymn of the Month for August. We felt that it had been some time since we introduced a hymn specifically oriented to the Sacrament and felt that it would be good to add a new selection for use during that time in the liturgy. We will, in fact, be singing this as our offertory throughout the month until our annual service at St. Paul s in Glenwood. George Wallace Briggs, a canon of Worcester Cathedral, was among the most well-known British hymn writers during the first half of the 20 th Century. Along with being a member of the Church of England clergy, he was also a leading member of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland and had a strong interest in religious education. Briggs published two volumes ( Prayers and Hymns for use in Schools and The Daily Service ) which gained wide publication throughout the United Kingdom during his time. Briggs penned the text for our hymn to celebrate Christ s presence at the Holy Eucharist. Verse 1 recalls the portion of Luke 24: where the disciples invite Jesus to be their guest but then He becomes their host. Verse 2 refers to our partaking of the Sacrament while verses 3 and 4 focuses on the oneness shared by all Christians on Earth as well as in Heaven. As is the case with a great number of our hymns, different tunes were formerly associated with Come, risen Lord prior to the current Rosedale. One of note is Birmingham, the tune that we now associate with #437, Tell out, my soul. One aspect that I find most interesting when researching our hymns are the stories behind the naming of each particular hymn tune. In this case, it is Rosedale. This one was illusive to say the least and certainly gave me the proverbial run for my money! One of the very few sources addressing this was a site advertising and displaying pages of The Hymnal 1982 Companion to give samples of its content. There, at the bottom of the page, I finally discovered the words Rosedale is the name of the house on the. No.... That is not a typographical error. That is exactly where the sentence left off! After throwing up my hands and storming away from the computer, I returned later with new resolve and did locate the complete information on another website. Leo Sowerby is known to be among the most influential American organists and composers. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and his interest in the organ began early in his life. Although he eventually studied the instrument formally, he was self-taught when he originally began playing in his teens. In 1946 Sowerby was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music and was often referred to the Dean of American Church Music. He spent much of his life as organist and choirmaster at St. James s Episcopal Church in Chicago. This parish church was consecrated to cathedral in 1955 during his residency. Upon his retirement from St. James s in 1962, he was called to the Washington National Cathedral where he became the founding director of the College of Church Musicians. He wrote the tune currently applied to Eucharistic hymn Come, risen Lord, and deign to be our guest to be used at a service celebrating the cathedral s Gloria in Excelsis tower. At last, and much to my relief, I discovered the origin of Rosedale! It is the name of the house on the cathedral close (buildings affiliated with the cathedral) where College of Church Musicians is located and where Sowerby composed the melody. Sources:

4 Rev. Edwin J. Eilertsen Eilertsen, Rev. Edwin J. Reverend Edwin John Eilertsen, 90, went home to God on Saturday, May 16, 2015, sur- rounded by his loving family. He shared his passionate, continuously evolving faith in the "living church" with countless people in his parishes and throughout the wider community in a life of devoted service to all he touched. Born on March 15, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A, earned a Masters of Divinity from Berkley Seminary at Yale and an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Seabury Western Seminary at Northwestern University in special recognition for his work in pastoral care. He was ordained into the Episcopal ministry by the Diocese of Minnesota in His lifetime was marked by his devotion to family, seeking, learning and helping others. His ministry was shared and fully supported by his adoring wife of 65 years, Judith Stetson Eilertsen. Called first to serve as Rector of St. Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Minnesota, he then led as Rector of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Richfield; Director of Christian Education for the Diocese of Minnesota; Director, with Reverend Russell Ewald and Reverend Richard E. Byrd of the "Churches Action Program." He then served his longest tenure as Rector of St. Martin's by the Lake Episcopal Church in Minnetonka. Following his retirement from St. Martin's by the Lake, he served next as Rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Boca Grande, Florida, then served as Interim Minister for many churches in the midst of change, including Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. Preceded in death by his parents, Camilla and Jack Eilertsen; his in-laws, James V. and Isetta Bennett, Edwin is survived by his wife, Judy; brother, Clarence; daughters Susan (Sam Worthing), Kathy and Betsy; grandchildren Twyla, Sarah and Nicholas. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Mpls on Friday, May 22, at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome. 6 HOT DAYS, COOL JAZZ: July 19th on the lawn at Emmanuel. Could the day have been more perfect? Andrew was his absolutely amazing self, singing and playing jazz. He even jazzed up a Beatle s tune. We had a very low turnout, but still managed to send $ to the Outreach Food Shelf. Andrew is already talking about coming back next year. But we might try a Friday night. We sincerely hope everyone get s a chance to hear this amazing guy. And we d really like to raise more money for the Food Shelf. Even if you didn t get to the concert, feel free to make a donation now. Mary Sinning reported 34 new families in the month of June alone. The need is always there.
