Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) - Mark 7:31-37 R eturning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man's ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, 'Ephphatha', that is, 'Be opened'. And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. 'He has done all things well,' they said 'he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.' Copyright 1966, 1967 & 1968 by Darton, Longman & Todd, & Doubleday & Co. Inc. and used by permission 1. Spend some time quietly reading and rereading the passage. 2. Note the words/phrases that draw your attention. 3. Imagine the scene the journey through Gentile country, the deaf man being brought to Jesus. What do you see, hear, think, feel..? 4. What do you want to say to Jesus? How does he respond? 5. Are there any areas of your life that you would like to be opened? For Conversation The people you have trouble hearing. Later in September we hope to warmly welcome some special guests to the parish Following in the footsteps of Pope Francis who continues to reach out in friendship to so many Muslim brothers and sisters, a small group of parishioners recently visited a local mosque in Cheadle and received a very kind and hospitable welcome. In return, the Imam and members of the community were invited to visit us here at St Peter s and the invitation was enthusiastically accepted. The purpose of the visit is to begin to build relationships with a community of worshippers who are feeling very vulnerable and would appreciate and benefit from our support and friendship during these anxious times Fr Peter will welcome the visitors on our behalf at the end of 10am Mass on 20th September. We will then move to the parish centre and the Imam will give a brief talk on the Islamic faith and answer any of our questions. We are hoping that as many people as possible will join the visitors in the Centre. (The next stage will be for us to explore how we further develop our relationship through shared projects and activities). Please pray for our Muslim brothers and sisters; accept their invitation if possible, and keep a look out for the date of their visit when it is confirmed. Walking Group The next walk will be on 20th September from Whaley Bridge. Meet at the station car park, you can park on the road (the old A6) in front of the station. We have done this walk before but so many expressed delight we will do it again. Choir Practices resume this week, Adult choir: Thursdays 8.00pm-9.30pm. Junior Choir: Fridays 5.30pm-6.15pm. New members for both choirs would be most welcome. Please phone Eileen Rigg on for more details, or come along to the practice on Thursday or Friday. All children from 3 years upwards are welcome to join us in celebrating the gospels in our own special way. Young people in Yr 6 and above, why not come to Explorers (also at the 10.00am mass) and find out what the gospels can mean for you. There will be a short recommissioning for all Children s Liturgy catechists at the beginning of the 10.00am mass on Sunday 13 th September.
