We extend a warm welcome to those visiting or worshipping with us for the first time today. Sunday Services 9:00am Eucharist A service of Holy Communion which is usually sung with hymns and a sermon. On the 1 st and 3 rd Sunday s the music is led by the Mapstone Scholars. On the 4 th Sunday the service is said. 2 From the Rector I suspect that at some time or other we have all dreamt of finding treasures. Usually our treasure is money, or perhaps a special heirloom, or even a cherished memory. But what about people as treasure? Ordinarily, we don t tend to think of treasure as a person although we might talk in terms of the love that exists between two people as treasuring each other, and it might well be said that parents treasure their children. The truth is that there are many treasures to found in so many aspects of life family, home, community, friendship, and integrity to name just a few. Good as these are though, they are exhaustible. What God offers us is an inexhaustible Treasure. This treasure is the Son (whom todays gospel refers to as the Master). Where our treasure is, there our hearts must be too and if that s true, it shouldn t be difficult for us to do what Jesus would do. This is why the way we live as disciples is so critical. This is why being a disciple is not something we slot into our already hectic schedules allocating God an hour or so on a Sunday in the same way that we might allocate time during the week to go to the Supermarket or the Doctor or take an exercise class. Being a disciple is just that being. It s much more a matter of the surrender of our whole selves to the masters will which means that who we are and how we live makes present God s kingdom. The way we live, therefore witnesses to where our treasure is. Our very living challenges others to prioritise their own treasures. Clearly, God must have priority in our lives. We make this apparent when religion is not so much the practices we do but more the loving relationship we develop as we encounter God. Let s make sure that we share that treasure with others, after all, it s inexhaustible and there s enough for everybody. Have a great week! Fr. Nick 2

4 Holy Communion The Anglican Church of Australia offers the hospitality of the altar to all baptized Christians. Please come forward to receive from the Celebrant and then move to receive from one of the chalices. If you cannot come to the priest, please let one of the sides- people know and the sacrament will be brought to you. Those who have died recently and all those whose anniversaries occur this week. 4

5 News Study Group This is week four of a six week course looking at What Christians believe. There is no cost and all learning materials are provided free of charge. There are two groups, one on Tuesday mornings at 10 am, and the other on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Everybody is welcome, and if you would like to take part, please feel free to come along. Our session this week is about the death and resurrection of Jesus. Administrative help If you are able to offer assistance in the preparation of the monthly rosters or in helping to put together a detailed inventory, please let Jo know. Thank you. Treasurer We are fortunate that all of the book keeping for our parish is done by Jo our administrator, but we are required to have a treasurer to oversee the finances of the parish. If you would be interested in helping out with this, please speak to Fr. Nick or one of the wardens. Training and support are available. Men s Fellowship Thank you to everybody who expresed interest in joining a Men s Fellowship. Our first meeting will be breakfast at Dome Café in Claremont on Saturday 13 th August at 8.30 am. Please let Fr. Nick know if you would like to come. Expansion of our music program opportunities for young singers We are pleased to announce that we are extending our music program with establishment of two new choirs for young people. A Junior Choir for children aged 8-12 and a Senior Choir for young people aged Auditions will be held in October. Please speak to Kate or see the poster in the Narthex for more details. 5

6 The Alice Mapstone Choral Scholarships Auditions for The Alice Mapstone Choral Scholarships worth $3,000 p.a. will be held in Church on Tuesday 23rd August 2016 at 7.30 p.m. Please speak to Kate or see the poster in the Narthex for more details. The Mapstone Scholars and Friends in Concert Flyers for this concert on 20 th August are available in the narthex. This is a fund raising concert for our music program and it would be really helpful if you could promote it amongst your family and friends and encourage them to buy tickets. It would be great if our musicians had a full church to perform to. Prayer Tree A prayer tree has been set up in the lady Chapel. If there is anything that you would like prayed for, please complete a tag and hang it on the tree. The choice is yours as to whether your prayer is anonymous or not. The tags will be taken off every Wednesday morning and we will pray for everything on the cards at our Wednesday morning Eucharist. Next week s readings Mary, Mother of Our Lord, 14 August at 9am. 7 A Reading from the Book of Isaiah The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more; bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Come now, let us argue it out, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. 8 Psalm 50 The Lord, the most mighty God, has spoken and called the world from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth; our God comes and will not keep silence. Consuming fire goes out before him and a mighty tempest stirs about him. He calls the heaven above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: 'Gather to me my faithful, who have sealed my covenant with sacrifice.' Let the heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Hear, O my people, and I will speak: 'I will testify against you, O Israel; for I am God, your God. 'I will not reprove you for your sacrifices, for your burnt offerings are always before me. 'You that forget God, consider this well, lest I tear you apart and there is none to deliver you. 'Whoever offers me the sacrifice of thanksgiving honours me and to those who keep my way will I show the salvation of God.' Psalm 50:1-8,

9 A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old and Sarah herself was barren because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them. Hear the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Hebrews 11:1-3,

10 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
