1 PewNews+ Christmas Eve Nativity Eucharist 24 th December 2016 Welcome to Church of the Resurrection and the Anglican Parish of Swanbourne- Mt. Claremont. We extend a warm welcome to those visiting or worshipping with us for the first time today. Sunday Services 9:00am Eucharist A service of Holy Communion, which is usually sung with hymns and a sermon. On the 1 st and 3 rd Sunday s the music is led by the Mapstone Scholars. On the 4 th Sunday the service is said. Children s Church meets in the meeting room at 9 am on the 1 st, 3 rd and 5 th Sundays and at 5 pm on the 4 th Sunday. 5:00pm 1 st Sunday of the Month: Eucharist for healing and reconciliation. The laying on of hands and anointing are available at this service. 2 nd Sunday of the month: Families@5 Family Eucharist at which children are encouraged to help lead the service. 4 th Sunday of the month: Choral Mass with music led by the Mapstone Scholars THE ANGLICAN PARISH OF SWANBOURNE MT. 2 From the Rector Preparations for Christmas this year have been a very different experience for me than in the past not least because it seems very strange to be celebrating Christmas in the middle of Summer! Being in a new parish brings all sorts of new challenges to the Christmas preparations, including different expectations, liturgies, facilities and so on. None of this though is important. What matters is that for centuries, Christians all over the world have celebrated the fact that Christ was born for us and for our salvation, and we continue to do so today. In our Church this year there are two crib scenes, one put together during the Nativity Eucharist, and the other in the Narthex, visible to all who pass by. The focal point of the crib is the baby lying in a manger. This, however, is no ordinary baby. This is God himself, through whom all things were made, come down into his own creation, to save us. As St. John put it The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14). Our church is also decorated today with a Christmas tree, draped in lights reminding us that Christ is the light of the world, the light that shines in the darkness, which the darkness did not overcome. (John 1:5). We too are called, as Christians, to shine in this community as we seek to minister in Christ s name here in Swanbourne and Mt. Claremont. May I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to everybody who has helped to prepare the church and contributed in any way to our Christmas celebrations. Holy Communion The Anglican Church of Australia offers the hospitality of the altar to all baptized Christians. Please come forward to receive from the Celebrant and then move to receive from one of the chalices. If you cannot come to the priest, please let one of the sides- people know and the sacrament will be brought to you. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, please come forward, holding your Order of Service. Today s Carols and Music Processional Carol: Once in Royal David s City Junior Choir All: Once in royal David s city, stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for His bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child. He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall; with the poor and mean and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy. 4

5 And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, love and watch the lowly maiden in whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he. For He is our childhood's pattern, day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew; and He feeleth for our sadness, and He shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see Him, through His own redeeming love; for that Child so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heaven above; and He leads His children on to the place where He is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God s right hand on high; where like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around. 10 News Retiring Collection at our Christmas Services A retiring collection will be taken at all our Christmas services for Angel Tree. Angel Tree is designed to reach the innocent victims of crime who are often forgotten..children of prisoners. Being separated from a parent at Christmas time is a painful experience. Angel Tree touches those children with the love of Christ at Christmas by providing them with special Christmas gifts. Expansion of our music program opportunities for young singers We will be holding auditions for a new Senior Choir aimed at High School Students early in the new school year. Under the guidance of Director of Music, Kate Oliver, an accomplished conductor, soprano and teacher, the choristers will receive focussed and professional- level training in music theory, sight- reading, aural skills and vocal technique, as well as regular performance opportunities. The commitment will involve one midweek rehearsal per week, and Sunday services 2-3 times per month, plus concerts and major church festivals. 11 Christmas. The donations were taken to the collecting box at Claremont Quarter during the week by members of our congregation. Organ Appeal To date, we have raised $15,195 towards our target of $22,700 which, after GST is rebated, is the cost of our new organ. This leaves $7,505 to raise. Our sincere thanks go to everybody who has contributed so far. Any donation you can give, however small, will help us on our way.
