From the Rector There is perhaps no other story that has been told and retold in so many thousands of ways as the birth of Jesus. Much about it captures our imaginations. It is an easy story for children s drama, with lots of characters: mum, dad, a newborn baby, angels, shepherds, sheep, and donkeys. We empathise with the hardship of Mary and Joseph when they found no room for them at the inn, and then giving birth to a firstborn son in a place which was less than hospitable, having to use a manger for a crib. If we are not careful though, these picturesque and memorable details can limit our appreciation for what we really celebrate. Christmas is less about the birth of a baby and far more about the birth of a divine Saviour. It is less about glory and joy and more about an invitation to us today to enter into the saving mystery God revealed so uniquely in Jesus Christ. It is less about drama and more about the nitty- gritty challenge of living daily the mystery of God among us. Christmas is a feast of salvation; the Son is sent to bring us from the darkness of sin into the light of glory; to reject godless ways and worldly desires; and to make for God a new people who have been invited into a share of God s glory, peace, and graciousness. Christmas calls us to give the most important gift of all the very Life of God to each other. We have been given the Gift of Jesus, now we must share this Gift with others as we continue our journey through life. Christmas calls us to open our eyes to see where we can bring joy and peace to those around us. May we live our lives in such a way that the glory of God within us shines forth, bringing light into darkness, hope into desperation, and peace into discord. Jane, Toby, Celine, and I wish you all a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. Fr. Nick 2

Today s Carols and Music Processional Carol: Once in Royal David s City Junior Choir All: Once in royal David s city, stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for His bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child. He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall; with the poor and mean and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy. And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, love and watch the lowly maiden in whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he. 4

For He is our childhood's pattern, day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew; and He feeleth for our sadness, and He shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see Him, through His own redeeming love; for that Child so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heaven above; and He leads His children on to the place where He is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God s right hand on high; where like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around. Cecil Frances Alexander ( ) Carol during the Nativity: Away in a manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; the stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus Look down from the sky, and stay by my side until morning is nigh. 5

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay close by me for ever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, and fit us for heaven, to live with thee there. Anonymous Offertory Carol: While shepherd s watched their flocks by night While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground the angel of the Lord came down and glory shone around. "Fear not," said he, (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind); "glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind." "To you in David s town this day is born of David's line a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign. "The heavenly Babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swathing bands and in a manger laid. Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, who thus addressed their joyful song: 6

"All glory be to God on high and to the earth be peace; goodwill henceforth from heaven to men begin and never cease Nahum Tate During Communion the Junior Choir will sing: O little town of Bethlehem & Silent night Recessional Carol: Hark The herald angels sing. Hark the herald angels sing glory to the new- born King, peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. Joyful, all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies; with the angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem" Hark, the herald angels sing glory to the new- born King. Christ, by highest heav'n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold Him come, offspring of a Virgin's womb Veiled in flesh the Godhead see: hail, the incarnate Deity, pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark, the herald angels sing glory to the new- born King. 7

Hail, the heav'n- born Prince of Peace Hail, the Sun of Righteousness Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth. Hark, the herald angels sing glory to the new- born King. Music Foundation Work to establish a music foundation is now underway with the aim of generating c. $35,000 p.a. to fund the training of young musicians and provide them with opportunities to perform publicly. The intention is that once it has been established, donations to the fund will be tax deductible. The good news is that $8,000 has already been pledged and if you would be interested in pledging money (over and above your regular giving to the Church), it would be helpful if you could let Fr. Nick know so that we can ascertain whether this is going to be achievable. Thank you. For sale Tables, red, yellow, green and blue, adjustable height. $125 each Office desk $100 If you or someone you know would be interested in buying any of the above items, please speak to Fr. Nick or one of the Churchwardens. All offers considered. Thank you. 10
