8 May 25, 2014 Page 8 Rector s Corner Commencements and Ordination It is that momentous time of the year when high school and college seniors are completing their degrees and walking in procession to receive their diplomas. On Sunday, May 18 th, the Senior Cadets of Benedictine Military School graduated with a Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises in the Cathedral. It was a happy, reverent and beautiful afternoon for the students and their parents. Our congratulations to all of them. On Wednesday evening, May 28 th, the Senior Class of St. Vincent s Academy will graduate with Benediction and Commencement Exercises in the Cathedral. St. Vincent s Graduation is always a very beautiful and joyful celebration. Our congratulations to all of the young women who are completing their high school years and moving on to college. On Saturday, May 31 st, at 10:00 AM, the Cathedral will again be the site of the ordination of a new Priest for the Diocese of Savannah. Rev. Mr. Vernon Knight will be ordained a Priest by Bishop Hartmayer. Vernon comes from Sacred Heart Parish in Warner Robins, Georgia. He has completed his Seminary studies at St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. Vernon is a very fine man. I had the pleasure working with him when he was assigned to the city of Columbus and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish for one year as part of his Seminary formation. Vernon will be assigned to St. Joseph s Parish in Macon, Georgia after his Priestly ordination. We welcome his family to the Cathedral, and all of those who will be coming from other parishes in the Diocese for this important event. We also welcome the Priests and Deacons of the Diocese who will be coming for the Ordination Mass. Rev. J. Gerard Schreck Rector

9 Page 9 May 25, 2014 We gather here today, called by the Holy Spirit to give thanks and praise to God. As our long Easter celebration draws toward its conclusion, we hear more and more about this Holy Spirit. Today Jesus tells us that the Father will send us another Advocate, who will be with us always. As we hear God s holy word and respond in our sacramental celebration, let us pray to be more open to the movement of the Spirit in our lives. June Item of the Month The Christian Service Committee sponsors the Personal Hygiene Packets for the Social Apostolate Center. These packets are delivered monthly. We need white wash cloths, small.85 oz. travel size toothpaste and toothbrushes for the hygiene packets. Year to date, over 550 showers have been provided. Packets were also delivered to the Homeless Authority. The CSC mission is to promote awareness to encourage involvement and to thank you for your continued support. 10 Page 10 May 25, 2014 Our Eucharistic Lord is Calling In this Easter Season we share the joy of God s great gift of his Only Begotten Son, who died for our sins and rose again, the first fruits of his promise of eternal life. How privileged we are that Jesus lives amongst his people, in our hearts and on the altar! We have access to Eucharistic Adoration every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Our Lord waits for us there in that small chapel, beckoning us to spend a little quiet time with him. Right now, we have need a Adorers at the following times: 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. If you have never come to Adoration before, this is a good time to try it out. Come and see Jesus and visit with him. If you would like one of these hours, even for a month or two, call Gretchen at Catholic Night at the Ballpark On Wednesday, June 4th, the Diocese of Savannah will sponsor Catholic Night at the Sand Gnats baseball game. Help pack Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah and hit a grand slam against Hunger. Canned goods collected at the game will go to the Social Apostolate, which provides services to the homeless. Show some Catholic spirit and join Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer when he throws out the first pitch as the Savannah Sand Gnats take on the Asheville Tourists. PARTICIPATING CATHOLIC TUITION Cathedral parishioners who have children in Catholic Schools and who wish to receive the parish participating tuition rate must be endorsed by Fr. Schreck. A participating parishioner is a parishioner who attends Mass on weekends and Holy Days of Obligation, participates in the activities of the parish, contributes to the offertory collection in a recognizable way by using envelopes or checks as a means of verification of attendance. ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS We receive many requests for parishioners to qualify for weddings here, or to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at the Cathedral. Part of that request is to call be able to verify that a person is an active member of the Cathedral Parish. Because of the nature of our congregation, having so many visitors, it is difficult to know everyone. An active member of this Parish is one who: Is properly registered and on the parish rolls. Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days Participates in parish activities when possible Uses the parish envelope system While assessments of an inquirer s status will be made individually, the above are the main factors that will be considered in making that determination.
