1 Service for the Lord s Day Palm/Passion Sunday, March 20, 2016 GATHERING AROUND THE WORD 11:00 AM RINGING OF THE BELL OPENING VOLUNTARY ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR ST. THEODULPH, ARR ALEC WYTON JUDITH BROWN, ORGAN WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. For our younger members: The Bible tells us people cut branches from palm trees, laid them across Jesus path and waved them in the air, as they would to greet a king. How is Jesus like a King? How is he different? SHARING OF JOYS AND CONCERNS (Since our service is broadcast on the radio, please make sure you have permission to request prayer on behalf of another person.) PROCLAMATION OF THE ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM LUKE 19:35 40 They brought the colt of a donkey to Jesus; and after throwing their clocks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their clocks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they has seen, saying, Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven! Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, Teacher, order your disciples to sop. He answered them: I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out. CHORAL INTROIT WAVE YOUR BRANCHES THOMAS PAVLECHO THE SANCTUARY CHOIR; CHELSEA BOOR, FLUTE; ZACH DODGE, DRUM; THE JOYBELLS Wave your branches, wave them high, Jesus now is riding by. Wave your branches, shout and sing: Loud hosannas to your King. Wave your branches, wave them now, With Jerusalem's cheering crowd. Wave your branches, shout and sing: Loud hosannas to your King. Wave your branches, wave them high, Jesus now is riding by. Wave your branches, shout and sing: Loud hosannas to your King.
2 * CALL TO WORSHIP Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! * HYMN #196 ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION On this day of palms and celebration, Jesus continues his journey with God. We will go with him, for a while, until he turns toward Calvary. From atop the Mount of Olives, Jesus prepares to travel through the valley of heartache and loss. We will follow him, for a while, cradling hope in our heart. In the streets of Jerusalem, Jesus hears the cries of those who adore him. We will shout Jesus name, for a while, until we cry out, Crucify him! Forgive us, O God, and strengthen us to stay with Jesus, all the way (Silence for personal prayer and reflection.) KYRIE ELEISON #576 LORD, HAVE MERCY (Sing twice) SINGAPURA WORDS OF ASSURANCE * RESPONSE #197 Hosanna in the highest! That ancient song we sing, for Christ is our Redeemer; the Lord of heaven, our King. O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice, and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice. ELLACOMBE * PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. (Please greet one another with the peace of Christ.)
3 ANTHEM SING A LOUD HOSANNA MARK SCHWEIZER PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION THE SANCTUARY CHOIR All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer King! To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. Thou art the King of Israel, thou David's royal son, Who in the Lord's name comest, the King and Blessed One. The company of angels are praising thee on High, And mortal men and all things created make reply. The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went; Our prayer and praise and anthems before thee we present. Hosanna in the Highest! To thee, before thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise; To thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise. Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring, Who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King. Come, sing a loud Hosanna! If you have any questions, or if you need a ride, please contact Gail Plitnik at WORSHIP & MUSIC RULING ELDERS NEEDED TO SERVE COMMUNION: The Worship and Music Committee is looking for Ruling Elders to serve communion occasionally. While Session members serve communion by intinction throughout the year, more Ruling Elders are needed to help with seated communion. Please contact Cathy Levitas or Carolyn Mathews if you are a Ruling Elder and would be willing to help serve seated communion. JUDIE BROWN S RETIREMENT DINNER: At the end of March, Judie Brown is retiring from her position as Director of Christian Music, but we are very happy that she is not planning to move from the area. We rejoice with her in looking back over the 10 years she has been playing our organ, directing our choirs, bringing us to tears with majestic music and enlivening our worship with sacred music from various genres. Plan to help her celebrate her entry into retirement by attending a congregational dinner in her honor on Wednesday, March 30 in the Fellowship Hall at 6PM. If you plan to attend the dinner, please complete the attached reservation card. Name: Number of Guests:
7 AT FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH March 20: March 23: March 24: 5:00 PM Stations of the Cross at Emmanuel Episcopal Join our friends across the street for a devotional service, including a quiet time of lectio divina (slow reading of the Scripture), a brief meditation and then the Stations of the Cross. Each station is represented by artwork around the church, where we will read Scripture and experience (through prayers for the world and our community) Jesus suffering for us all. 5:00 PM Easter Vigil Service at St. Paul s Lutheran Bring the family to St. Paul s for an Easter Vigil Service presented by their Puppet Team, followed by an Egg Hunt. We will join the families and children of St. Paul s after school program for a time designed especially for young children. 7:00 PM Maundy Thursday Service at Emmanuel Episcopal Come hear the story of Jesus last night with his disciples and share a sacred meal in his name. This special service includes the option of foot washing, healing prayer and anointing for service. Clergy and musicians from all three churches will provide leadership. March 25: 7:00 PM Good Friday Service at First Presbyterian Our service will be contemplative and will include a dramatic reading of the Passion Narrative according to John, a time for venerating the cross, and music offered by the choirs of all three churches. March 27: 7:00 AM Easter Sunrise Service at Rocky Gap Greet the sunrise with our Easter Sunrise Service at Rocky Gap (Mountain View Pavilion). We celebrate the Resurrection in a service including the reading and proclamation of the Easter story, communion and music provided by a brass quartet of local professional musicians. Remember to dress warmly. Hot beverages will be available after the service. In case of frigid weather, the service will take place in the Sanctuary. 11:00 AM Easter Sunday Service We celebrate the Resurrection with the Proclamation of the Gospel according to Luke, communion and the offering of Paul Halley s arrangement of What Wondrous Love by the Sanctuary Choir and guest instrumentalists and singers from the tri-state area. Paul Halley composed this arrangement while he was the Organist at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. This setting of Wondrous Love builds its way from an intimate setting to a triumphant setting at the end with long flourishes of full organ, strings and percussion. We conclude the service with the traditional singing of the Hallelujah Chorus. Congregation members are invited to join Judie Brown and the Sanctuary Choir in the choir loft for this marvelous finale.
