With professional facilitator support, we will work together to determine how to strengthen our civic network and to promote trust and respect among community members and leaders. 6 STEWARDSHIP DINNER HOSTS NEEDED: This year we plan to have our annual Stewardship Dinners during the month of October. We intend to have one per week and vary the day of the week that each dinner is held. If you are interested or able to host a dinner in October, please be in contact with Kathy Getty or the church office to make arrangements. HAVE YOU REACHED AGE 70½? GETTING CLOSE? This is the age at which you must begin to receive taxable required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your Individual Retirement Accounts, other than Roth IRAs. A recent tax law allows you to use a portion of your RMD to make contributions to your church or other charities. You may wish to consider making charitable contributions from your RMD, rather than from other sources. The contribution must be transmitted directly from your investment manager to the church or charity. If this is done, your gift is called a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). This fall the Administration and Finance Committee will offer an informational meeting about this topic if there is interest. Please call the church office if you would like to attend. You may wish to review your last year s income tax return and Medicare premium notice, and discuss qualified charitable distributions with your accountant and financial advisor. You may discuss general questions with Agnes Yount. If you are interested, please pick up an informational sheet, Charitable Contributions vs. Qualified Charitable Distributions, in the hallway as you leave this morning. BUILDINGS & GROUNDS BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS MONTHLY MEETING: Please note that the meeting scheduled for Monday, August 15, has been moved to Tuesday, August 16, at 7PM. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION BACK TO SCHOOL BLESSING: Calling teachers and students of all ages! Anyone who is preparing to begin a new school year in August or September is invited to bring your backpack or school bag or brief case and come forward during worship on next Sunday, August 21 st for a special blessing. Mark your calendars now! BEING PRESBYTERIAN: FOUNDATIONS OF PRESBYTERIAN DISCIPLESHIP: To be Presbyterian is to join a way of life informed by a particular rhythm: God calls us in grace and love; we respond in gratitude. Join Caroline Kelly and others for a 5-part video services that will introduce this basic rhythm of life to which all Presbyterians are asked to be a part. This study is designed for anybody, whether you are seeking to become a member of the church, are a cradle Presbyterian or are just curious. Each video is about 10 minutes long and comes with questions designed to guide further discussion. We will gather on Wednesday evenings from 7-8PM in the pastor s office, this week: Who do they say that I am? CELEBRATING A MILESTONE: The baptism of Samuel Christopher Kellermeyer, son of Chris and Alex Kellermeyer, will take place during worship on September 4, Today, August 14, 2016, we will host a multi- generational gathering at the church to prepare for his baptism. Join us as we share this meaningful time together, have caring conversations with family and friends, review the importance of baptism, and take time to pray for Samuel and his family. A light lunch will be served. And then be sure to join us for worship on Sunday, September 4 when we will welcome him as the newest member of the church. MISSION BRIDGES TO OPPORTUNITY: Come and hear about an opportunity that will make First Presbyterian more vital to our community! On next Sunday, August 21 st, Pam Jan will offer two 15 minute presentations, 9:15 and 11:15, in our Chapel. Please plan to come and learn how you can be a part of carrying out God s will for our community.

7 HELP US STOCK THE GILCHRIST YMCA KITCHEN PANTRY: The Y kitchen prepares dinners 4-5 times per week and meals during the day. They are in need of supplies to stock their kitchen pantry. Several area churches have volunteered to supply different food items. We are providing bulk condiments for August and September. Please see the sign-up sheet on the white board and sign up to purchase and delivery them. Items can be delivered during day time hours to the downtown Gilchrist YMCA on Baltimore Street. MISSION OUTREACH: The monthly outreach dinner that we help with will be held on Sunday, August 28 th at the HRDC building on Virginia Avenue. Dinner will be served from 4:00-5:30PM. If anyone can volunteer to serve dinner and/or help clean tables, please let Judy Stern or Linda Smith know. WORSHIP & MUSIC CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER SERVICE: We will be gathering for Contemplative Prayer in the style of the Taizé community in the chapel at 7 pm next Sunday, August 21. You can come as you are, invite a friend, or the person walking down the street. You may remain silent or participate in the singing and reading. You can also bring an instrument to join in! We are hoping to continue this service every other week. For more information about the service contact Beau Hartman at hartmanmusichouse@gmail.com, and for more information about the the Taizé community visit: MAKING ROOM FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT: In our ongoing efforts to encourage a greater sense of communal worship, the Worship and Music Committee continues to rope off the back pews to "encourage" you to sit closer to each other. Back row people can still be back row people, just a little closer to the front. Please let us know how this arrangement affects your experience of community, whether you move or not. Do you see or hear things differently? Does sitting closer together impact your relationships with God and others during worship? Would you be comfortable sitting closer together and further forward in the sanctuary on a regular basis? FAREWELL AND THANK YOU BEAU HARTMAN: The Worship and Music Committee is hosting a reception immediately following worship on Sunday, August 28 th to thank Olivia Beau Hartman for sharing her spring and summer with us while serving as our interim Director of Music Ministries. Plan to mingle and chat with Beau about her fall plans for carrying forward her passion for all things musical, while spoiling your healthy lunch savoring a piece of delicious pie. Anyone interested in contributing a pie to the festivities, please contact Carolyn Mathews. SAVE-THE-DATE: Our Fall Kickoff has been scheduled for Sunday, September 11th, at Rocky Gap State Park. The kickoff will be held in the Lakeview Shelter starting with worship at 11AM and followed by a potluck picnic. Please mark your calendars!
