1 SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 6, :00 AM RINGING OF THE BELL OPENING VOLUNTARY THE WONDERFUL CROSS CHRIS TOMLIN, J.D. WATT WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. JUDITH BROWN, PIANO CHORAL INTROIT WE HAVE COME AT CHRIST S OWN BIDDING BREWER THE SANCTUARY CHOIR We have come at Christ s own bidding to this high and holy place, Where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God s grace. Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain, Searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain. * CALL TO WORSHIP We have encountered the Word, calling us into communion with God and with each other, And calling us into discipleship to carry on Christ s work in our world. So we come together here, joining hands in the great quest: to worship God, to love each other, and to serve the world. * HYMN #399 GOD WELCOMES ALL THEMBA AMEN (Make a joyful noise with your percussion instrument.) God welcomes all, strangers and friends; God s love is strong and it never ends. God welcomes all, parent and child; God s love is strong and it never ends. God welcomes all, young and the old; God s love is strong and it never ends. CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we confess that we have strayed from your ways. Like the Prodigal Son, we have wasted our inheritance. You gave us the earth for our home, but we squander earth s resources and hoard its bounty. You gave us neighbors to love, but we pursue selfish ambitions. SOUTH AFRICA

2 You gave us the commandments that lead to human flourishing, but we break your law and forsake your love. Forgive us our sin and bring us to repentance. Draw our wandering hearts back to you that we may find freedom in obedience to your love (Time for silent reflection and prayer) KYRIE ELEISON # 576 LORD, HAVE MERCY SINGAPURA Lord, have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us. (repeat) WORDS OF ASSURANCE * RESPONSE #475 COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING NETTLETON O to grace how great a debtor daily I m constrained to be! Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here s my heart; O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above. * PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. (Please greet one another with the peace of Christ.) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION PROCLAIMING THE WORD FIRST READING 2 CORINTHIANS 5:16-21 ANTHEM OFFERTORY JOHN NESS BECK THE SANCTUARY CHOIR With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on High? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, Shall I come before him with yearling calves? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgressions, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man; he has shown you what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? SECOND READING LUKE 15:1-3, 11B-32 SERMON REV. CAROLINE KELLY

But some grumbled and said of Jesus: This one welcomes sinners and eats with them. But Jesus said: Whoever welcomes you welcomes me... and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all you is the greatest. In company with saints and sinners in every time and beyond time, we come to this, God s welcome table, to meet the Risen Christ. GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

4 It is right to give God thanks and praise. Blessed are you, Eternal God... (the Celebrant continues the prayer)... we praise you with joy. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sing together) LAND OF REST Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. We remember all the meals of Jesus... CHRIST HAS DIED; CHRIST HAS RISEN (Sing together) LAND OF REST Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Eternal God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, that Christ may be present as we share this meal, that our eyes may be opened and that we may recognize him in our midst. Bless this bread and cup and bless us, that in the fullness of time every cup will be filled to overflowing, every table will be one of welcome, and every life will be filled with abundant love. AMEN (Sing together) LAND OF REST Amen, amen, amen. Remembering the prayer Jesus taught us, let us say together, THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. In this capacity, he manages the day-to-day operations of the organization and is in regular contact with European and international partners. Lent is the 40 day season before Easter (not including Sundays). Originally, it was a time of preparing candidates for baptism on Easter. Over the centuries it has evolved into a time devoted to renewing our understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ. We observe Lent in anticipation of the resurrection, and we celebrate Easter remembering the cost of the cross s life-giving victory. Lent began on February 10 th with Ash Wednesday and will conclude on March 26 th, the day before Easter Sunday. See the opportunities for Lenten study and devotions under the Christian Education Announcement section. The Lenten worship banner hanging in the front of the sanctuary depicts our journey with Jesus to the cross and toward the death that ultimately brings resurrection life. This week s panel, symbolizing the themes of God s patience and healing, was stitched by Jane Belt.
