Service for the Lord s Day April 20, 2014 Resurrection of the Lord/ Easter Sunday First Presbyterian Church Washington St. Cumberland, Maryland fpc-cumberland.org Gathering Around the Word 11:00 AM CHIMING OF THE HOUR OPENING VOLUNTARY Sonata in B (K212) W.A. Mozart WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. MOMENT FOR MISSION: One Great Hour of Sharing Offering Caroline Kelly Otto Ross The banner in front has depicted our journey throughout Lent, using a new art panel each week. They were removed for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday to reveal the somber looking road and crosses. Today, a full and brilliant resurrection cross has replaced the three gaunt crosses, symbolizing God s defeat of death in the Jesus resurrection.

CHORAL INTROIT Easter Chorale Samuel Barber The morning light renews the sky. Across the air the birds ignite like sparks to take this blaze of day through all the precincts of the night. Alleluia! The fires of dawn refresh our eyes. We watch the world grow wide and bright and praise our newly risen Light. The winter land receives the year. Her smallest creatures rouse and cling to swelling roots and buds that stir the restless air to reel and ring! Alleluia! The sounds of waking fill our ears. We listen to the live earth sing and praise our loving Source and Spring. The Call to Worship reminds us that worship begins with God, who takes the initiative in calling us together. We response by praising God. * CALL TO WORSHIP Caroline Kelly Rejoice and be glad: This is the day that the Lord has made! Rejoice and be glad: Heaven and earth will never be the same! Rejoice and be glad: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! * HYMN OF PRAISE #232 Jesus Christ is Risen Today Easter Hymn CALL TO CONFESSION Through the rising of Christ from the grave, God broke the power of the grave, God broke the power of death and condemned death itself to die. Trusting in the power of God s love, let us confess our brokenness, first in unison and then in silence. PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of new beginnings, help us to identify in our lives all that should rightly die unhealthy relationships, tired habits, fruitless longing. Resurrect in our lives faith, hope and love as surely as you raised Jesus Christ from the grave (Silence for personal prayer and reflection.) KYRIE ELEISON, #579 Kyrie eleison. Kyrie eleison. Kyrie eleison. WORDS OF ASSURANCE Friends: Hear the good news! With God, there is no relationship that cannot be reconciled, no chasm that cannot be bridged, no brokenness that cannot be healed. In Christ, we are forgiven. In Christ, we have new life. Amen. Russian Orthodox * RESPONSE IN PRAISE #582 Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me Glory to God * PASSING OF THE PEACE Since, in Christ, we have been reconciled to God, let us extend to one another signs of reconciliation and peace. May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Please greet one another with the peace of Christ.)

Proclaiming the Word PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION FIRST LESSON Acts 10:34-43 Using Albert Fedak s beautiful arrangement of the familiar tune Picardy, Sylvia Dunstan s text offers us a rich variety of titles and images that the Bible uses to describe Jesus. ANTHEM Christus Paradox Picardy arr. A. Fedak You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd. You, Lord, are both price and slave. You, peacemaker and sword-bringer of the way you took and gave. You, the everlasting instant; You, whom we both scorn and crave. Clothed in light upon the mountain, stripped of might upon the cross, shining in eternal glory, beggar d by a soldiers toss, you, the everlasting instant; You, who are both gift and cost. You, who walk each day besides us, sit in power at God s side. You, who preach a way that s narrow, have a love that reaches wide. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our pilgrim guide. Worthy is our earthly Jesus! Worthy is our cosmic Christ! Worthy your defeat and vict ry. Worthy still you peace and strife. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our death and life. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our death and our life. Alleluia! SECOND LESSON Matthew 28:1-10 Caroline Kelly SERMON Go and Tell Caroline M. Kelly Sealing the Word: Holy Communion * AFFIRMATION OF FAITH This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved, if we hold it fast: that Christ died for our sins according to the scripture, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, and that he appeared first to the women, then to Peter, and to the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus Christ is the first and the last, the beginning and the end; He is our Lord and our God. Amen. * HYMN OF RESPONSE #240 Alleluia, Alleluia! Give Thanks Alleluia No. 1 OFFERTORY SENTENCE OFFERTORY SOLO I Know That My Redeemer Liveth G. F. Handel Mikayla Young, Soprano I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first-fruits of them that sleep.

* DOXOLOGY #609 Laast Uns Erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! INVITATION TO THE TABLE The word thanksgiving, in its Greekderived form, Eucharist, is the most widely used description for the Sacrament of the Meal. Other ways are Lord s Supper, which emphasizes the sense of fellowship we enjoy as we gather, or Holy Communion, which emphasizes our intimate spiritual relationship with Christ. GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD S PRAYER Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Lord God, early in the morning, when the world was young, you made life in all its beauty and terror; you gave birth to all that we know. Holy is your name. Holy is your name. Early in the morning, when the world least expected it, a newborn child crying in a cradle announced that you had come among us, that you were one of us. Holy is your name. Holy is your name. Early in the morning, surrounded by respectable liars, religious leaders, anxious statesmen, and silent friends, you accepted the penalty for doing good, for being God: you shouldered and suffered the cross. Holy is your name. Holy is your name. Early in the morning, a voice in a guarded graveyard and footsteps in the dew proved that you had risen, that you had come back to those and for those who had forgotten, denied and destroyed you. Holy is your name. Holy is your name. This morning, in the multi-colored company of your Church on earth and in heaven, we celebrate your creation, your life, your death and resurrection, your interest in us; so we sing SANCTUS #595 Holy, Holy, Holy Argentine Santo (please use your percussion instruments to add flavor to this Argentinean tune) Holy, holy, holy. My heart, my heart adores you! My heart knows how to say to you: You are holy, Lord. Santo, santo, santo. Mi corazón te adora! Mi corazón te sabe de cir: Santo eres, Señor!

Bring new life, where we are worn and tired; new love, where we have turned hard hearted; forgiveness, where we have wounded; peace, where we have entered conflict; and healing, where we feel pain or suffer illness. God of all power, breathe your Holy Spirit upon us, and upon these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be for us the life of Christ and that we may make that life visible through our faithful witness to him, the one who taught us to pray together, saying, We use the most universal version of the Lord s Prayer, which uses contemporary English, in the hope that new generations will learn and understand this prayer in a fresh way. Luke s version of the Lord s Prayer uses sins and Matthew s version uses debts. Since debts refer not to money that is owed but rather to a debt of sin, the contemporary version uses sin to emphasize this understandin g. You are always welcome to pray in the words closest to your heart. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen WORDS OF INSTITUTION COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE MUSIC DURING COMMUNION (During Communion, Christus Resurrexit from the Taize liturgy, will be sung. Please see the refrain listed below and join the Sanctuary Choir in singing.) POST-COMMUNION PRAYER God of new life: We have rejoiced at the empty tomb, and broken bread in the presence of the Risen Lord. Energized by your Spirit and nourished by this bread and cup, Send us out into the world to proclaim the good news: Christ is Risen, he is risen indeed. Amen. Bearing and Following the Word into the World Caroline Kelly * HYMN OF PARTING #245 Christ the Lord Is Risen Today! Llanfair (If you would like to join the choir in singing the Hallelujah Chorus, please come to the choir loft during this hymn) * CLOSING VOLUNTARY Hallelujah G. F. Handel * Those who wish to do so are invited to stand. Please join in reading or singing those parts of the service printed in bold.

This Morning s Worship Leaders Preacher... Caroline Kelly Liturgist... Organist/Director of Music... Judith Brown Musicians:... Petr Skopek, Violin; Dee Cao-Newberger,Violin; Justin Newberger, Cello;... Michael Murphy, Timpani; Dave Kauffman, Saxaphone,... The Sanctuary Choir, Mikayla Young, Soprano Sound Technician... Joe Aurigemma Child Care...Janie Schlottmann and Jessie Gates Ushers... Kathy and Jeff Getty Thank you to this morning s Acolyte. Music Notes: Triumph! Resurrection! Joyous Praise! The music of Easter is heard and proclaimed throughout Christendom with joyous song and trumpet fanfare! We welcome our guest instrumentalists from the Maryland Symphony and Frostburg State University this morning! Samuel Barber ( ) is one of the most celebrated composers of the 20 th century. He is most well-known for his beautiful Adagio for Strings, which is a standard piece of repertoire for each orchestra. He also set Pack Browning s beautiful Easter spring text to music, which we will offer as the Choral Introit. Handel s classic Messiah is a magnificent composition for orchestra, choir and soloists, which summarizes the message of Christmas and Easter. Written in only 24 days, Messiah, as a whole, captures the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Lord. This morning, we will offer two movements from this work: first, Mikayla Young will sing the beautiful soprano aria, I Know that My Redeemer Liveth as the Offertory Solo and at the conclusion of the service, we will sing the Hallelujah Chorus. If you would like to join us in singing this popular chorus, please come to the choir loft during the final hymn and we will provide you with a musical score! Statement of Purpose Our Church exists to worship God and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. By the power of the Spirit, we shall serve God s Kingdom by loving our neighbors and promoting peacemaking, justice and care of the earth. Statement of Vision We embrace open and progressive theology. Through education, training, worship and Session leadership we will realize our vision both individually and in community. We will be open to new ideas and programs while staying true to our beliefs and traditions. We will commit our personal and corporate resources to embody our Statement of Purpose. We will live our lives responsibly with honesty and integrity.

General Announcements WELCOME to worship at First Presbyterian Church. Please sign the red pad in your pew, tear off the sheet and place it in the collection plate during the offering. This important practice allows us to be mindful of new folks and long-time members as well, and is a good way to learn (or remember) the names of those with whom you are seated. PERSONAL LISTENING DEVICES (amplifiers) are available in the back of the church for use during worship. Please see an usher for assistance. WORSHIP BROADCASTS: We are still in need of radio sponsors for The cost is $75 per Sunday, and Sundays can be shared. There are still open dates in May & June. If you would like to contribute, please contact Deb Hendrickson or the church office. This morning s broadcast is thanks to Deb and Gary Hendrickson. EASTER FLOWERS FOR THE HOMEBOUND: If you can deliver an Easter flower to one of our homebound or nursing care members, come to the table by the library and pick up a bulletin with an address label. Please make sure that you select a plant labeled Homebound/Nursing Care so that we don t accidentally deliver flowers that members intend to take home. Thank you for sharing Easter blessings with our members who cannot be with us today. THE CHURCH OFFICE will be closed on Monday, April 21 in observance of the Easter holiday. THE HIGHLANDERS will meet for lunch on Monday, April 21 at 12:00 noon at Henny s Restaurant, National Hwy, in LaVale. If you have any questions or need a ride, please contact Mary Gallion at A DRUMMING CIRCLE is held in the Chapel on the third Sunday of each month from 1-2:30 pm. Invite your friends and bring a drum, or if you don t have a drum, come and share. For more information, contact Mike Weddle at or Pam Jan at There will be no drumming circle on Easter; the next drumming circle will be on May 18. THE CUMBERLAND CHORAL SOCIETY will present its spring concert on Friday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 at 3:00 p.m. REQUIEM by Maurice Durufle is a special selection for our own church building since it not only requires choral singers and instruments, but also needs our beautiful organ and acoustics. This beautiful work is composed of beautiful melodic melodies based on Gregorian chant and is based on the tendresse style; that is one of omitting the chilling Dies Irae, but including a pleading and accepting Pie Jesu, sung by our own Mikayla Young. Please invite your friends and family to this Community Outreach concert. Mission Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities. Sharing brings joy to others, to God, and to us. Please give generously. RECYCLING SURVEY: Residents of Cumberland are encouraged to take the Recycling/Trash Survey on the City of Cumberland website. Just click on the link below and you will find the survey on the right-hand side of the website home page.
