Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. 5 WORSHIP NOTES Both the Anthem and the Offertory this morning have texts written by Welsh-born English poet, orator and Anglican priest, George Herbert (3 April March 1633). Herbert's poetry is associated with the writings of the metaphysical poets and he is recognized as "a pivotal figure: enormously popular, deeply and broadly influential, and arguably the most skillful and important British devotional lyricist." Throughout his life, he wrote religious poems characterized by a precision of language, a metrical versatility, and an ingenious use of imagery or conceits that was favored by the metaphysical school of poets. Herbert's first biographer, Izaak Walton, wrote that he composed "such hymns and anthems as he and the angels now sing in heaven". Liturgical colors and symbols help orient us to the season of the church year and engage the sense of sight in worship. White and gold is used to symbolize days and seasons of joy and to mark pivotal events in the life of Christ. Notice where you see white and gold in the sanctuary. As a symbol of Christ s resurrection, the use of the Paschal candle (also called the Easter Candle or the Christ Candle) can be traced back to the fourth century. We place it near the baptismal font and keep it lit throughout the season of Easter. It is also used at baptisms and funerals as a way of recalling our dying and rising with Christ. We will be receiving COMMUNION THIS MORNING by intinction. After the communion prayer is offered, you will be directed by the ushers to come forward by pew to the Lord s Table to receive a piece of bread and dip it into the cup. Those who are unable to walk to the Table will be served in their seats. Parents in the process of educating their children about church teachings and traditions may have questions about how and when their child should be prepared to come to the communion table. To start this education at home, make opportunities to share with your children what meaning communion has for you, any communion experiences you may remember from your childhood days, and ask children to think of times when they have felt close to God. Conversations like this will help to lay the groundwork for communion meditation. If anyone would like to discuss their child s readiness for communion, please contact Caroline at Did you know? For many years, Presbyterians (and other Protestants) approached communion as a somber occasion, lifting up the suffering and death of Jesus at the expense of celebrating the resurrection of Christ. In the sacrament, we do both. This fuller understanding of the sacrament allows us to approach communion with solemnity but also with joy, knowing that it is the risen Christ we meet when we gather at the table. 8 MISSION RESPONDING TO THE EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL: An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale struck west of the ancient Nepali capital of Kathmandu, Pokhara. It is the most powerful earthquake to hit the region in 81 years. The death toll from the quake has risen to more than 4,500 and is rising further. Humanitarian staff and officials are also affected. You can help in the ways listed below: GIVE: Financial support for relief efforts can be designated to DR with reference to Nepal. Gifts can be made to First Presbyterian Church and designated for Nepal PDA. PRAY: that the grace and love of Christ will cover the children and families who have been affected by the earthquake. CONGREGATIONAL CARE & OUTREACH A SPRING LUNCHEON will be held for our members 70 years and older at the home of Caroline Kelly and Jim Mooney on Saturday, May 30 from 12-2 p.m. Please R.S.V.P. to Nancy Hodges at or the church office by May 27 if you would like to attend and if you need a ride. Caregivers are welcome. FOOD FOR FREEZER PANTRY: Our freezer pantry downstairs is getting empty. We are in need of some restocking. Casseroles that can be frozen, soups, breads, and desserts are all welcomed. We take this food to our homebound members and occasionally to our members who are sick or recovering from surgery. These foods are very much appreciated and this is a great way to serve your church. Please contact Nancy Hodges if you have any questions. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION HELP NEEDED: We are looking for members of the church family to join the youth for events, including Sunday evenings, to build relationships with youth, have fun, participate in youth ministry, and provide coverage. We are looking for 1-2 people per Sunday evening (5:30-7pm). You would eat dinner with the youth, participate in or help run games, and the devotional/bible Study that concludes with prayer. We hope you could commit to one meeting every few months. If you are interested in helping with the youth, please contact Robby or any member of the Christian Education Committee. MEN S RETREAT: We would like to know if any men would be interested in attending a men s retreat. Plans are in the early stages. If you are interested or have any questions, contact Bryan Wodaski. BEING PRESBYTERIAN: FOUNDATIONS OF PRESBYTERIAN DISCIPLESHIP: To be Presbyterian is to join a way of life informed by a particular rhythm: God calls us in grace and love; we respond in gratitude. Join Caroline Kelly and others for a 5-part video services that will introduce this basic rhythm of life to which all Presbyterians are asked to be a part. This study is designed for anybody, whether you are seeking to become a member of the church, are a cradle Presbyterian or are just curious. Each video is about 10 minutes long and comes with questions designed to guide further discussion. Times and dates to be announced soon! Lesson 1: A People of Grace: For Presbyterians the first thing we need to know is that God is a God of Grace. This truth affects every aspect of our life. Lesson 2: Wicked Bad: Why do we talk about sin and evil? Are we saying that we're wicked bad? Are we the worst of the worst? Lesson 3: Who do they say that I am? We are asked to name Jesus as our "Lord and Savior." What does that really mean? Lesson 4: Update Your Faith System: Study and Worship are vital aspects of "being Presbyterian." Lesson 5: Blessed to be a Blessing: God has not called us to be concerned about ourselves. Our focus on Fellowship and Mission reminds us of that.
